    The message this song delivers is so powerfully beautiful, especially considering the context of its placement at the end of this album. Despite all the things that are wrong in this world, we can still find ourselves in moments where nothing can be more perfect than the lives we have. There's nothing to fear

    But I look at you
    As our second drinks arrive
    The piano player's playing "This Must Be The Place"
    And it's a miracle to be alive
    There is something about that verse that devastates me

    In this entire album of existential dread and woe about the human condition and it ends on such a high and beautiful note.
    A comedy is essentially defined in ancient Greek theater as a play which has a happy ending, no matter what they go through in the plot. Just like this album.
    Has there ever been a better musical example of "They had us in the first half, not gonna lie"

    listened without distractions to this today, and memories of my mother who died painfully at the age of 41 flooded my memory, and I crumbled to the floor in tears! THIS is why I absolutely love this Man's music.

    Timeless. I can hear bits of everything - that's not to diminish anything he's doing. Frankly he does everything better than the apparent influences. Best production I've heard in ages. Voice has great texture. Lyrics you want to think about. Brilliant sense of humour....

    I feel most folks find FJM pretentious. Yet the thing is, as an FJM fan, I have also seen it. When I first listened to I Love You, Honeybear, it took me about five listens to understand Josh. If I were to pick a song which clearly represents Tilman to me, I think it's got to be one of his earlier songs as FJM. For example 'Hollywood Cemetary Sings' or 'I'm Writing A Novel' do not in any form show elements of a pretentious musician.
    I cannot understand how this guy is just dismissed as pretentious in every remark I see. In interviews, Josh comes off as quite a loose person, who isn't quite as 'on the ball' or literate as most people would think after listening to 'Pure Comedy', but that's just the truth, he isn't. This bloke is consistent in what he does, and the songs are excellently crafted, but I think Pure Comedy did leave a lot people in the dark, and that's baffling to me. It's clear to me he's got something to say. Whether it be to people's tastes, at least he's doing something.
    Like in Leaving LA,
    'Nonetheless, I've been practicing my whole life
    Washing dishes, playing drums, and getting by
    Until I figured, if I''m here in the spotlight I may as well conceal my lack of skill here in the spotlight
    Is being self-aware really that bad?

    • @studioMYTH
      @studioMYTH 4 года назад +5

      I agree with you 100 percent. I've had people say "he sounds like a douche," "it sounds like he's just blaming other people for the worlds problems," "Why is he sexualizing women so much"
      1. He is not a douche
      2. He is VERY pointed about flaws in our behavior and society, but he literally ALWAYS acknowledges that this is just an inherent flaw in the complexity of conciousness.
      3. Every. Fucking. Song. about. women. Is. just. about. his. wife.
      Why are people so quick to ignore this mans work as pretentious, he is a fucking genius compared to people like neil young and bob dylan. Their lyrics seem arbitrary and just... not substantial compared to these songs. [in my opinion]

    • @personman8268
      @personman8268 2 года назад

      Super late to the party here, but as someone who found him pretentious at first, some of the first songs in the album seem to have him blaming other people for society's problems, but as I listened to more, I realized that's he's also really self-aware which transformed the album for me.

      Lol. He's definitely pretentious and I fucking love his music and I if you listen closely to his music you should know damn well that he acknowledges this. The Ballad of the Dying Man is just FJM making fun of himself when he's dying for 5 minutes straight.

      Yeah you're right critics do love it, but I feel like a lot of people on places such as reddit have been really disillusioned with FJM, calling him pretentious and having an overly simplified world view, I just don't understand why there's such a backlash like that
