My $500 Porsche 944 BLEW UP *Here's What Happened*

  • I took the $500 1987 Porsche 944 out for a rip and to make a video with @Velocity Garage ... then it started to overheat. So I trailed it back to the house and parked it outside so it could think about what it did wrong. Now that it's been a few months it's time to sort this car out again. I have an idea of what went wrong, but instead of just fixing that, we're going deep and changing basically all the common failure parts on the car. Unfortunately, it's literally days of work if you don't pull the engine.

Pro tip: oil in your coolant is almost always an oil to water cooler failure. Oil pressure is 40+, coolant pressure is 15.
Coolant in your oil is usually a head gasket, as coolant is pushed by combustion pressure (130+) into the oil system.
Of course there are always exceptions to the rule.😉

Remove radiator cap. Lay a piece of saran wrap across the filler neck. Push a shallow depression in the saran wrap. Seal the saran wrap in place with a rubber band. Squeeze the upper radiator hose to verify the depression pops up and goes back down. Start or crank cold engine for 15 seconds. If the saran wrap depression is popped up. You have a compression/combustion leak into the cooling system.. blown head gasket or cracked combustion chamber.

I love every single second of this video, in fact I'll watch it twice I'm sure. Great stuff, I had 2 of them and that explains why I like this video so much. I only got about 30 miles out of my red '84 with Fuchs rims, timing belt broke from an unknown oil leak inside the timing cover which had weakened the belt. Guy who disassembled it thought maybe the balance shaft belt shredded and took the timing belt out. It was just like a complete loss of power at 1500 rpms and it hurt me deeply once I found out what it was 😬😆
My mechanic friend who I took it to had a buddy who heard about my plight and sold me a Silver '84 944 with low miles and garage storage for $1000. It had sat 10 years. First thing I did was timing and balance belts, new gas with Cyclo gas treatment, oil change...she fired right up and I had 75,000 miles of the most fun possible, it wasn't bad. Only had a thermostat go out and a muffler the entire time. Excellent content, look forward to these.

Don't overcomplicate this job. As others have said, it is most likely the oil cooler. Pulling the head is going to lead to a bunch of broken plastic things on the back of the motor. Spend your time+money doing the motor mounts and replacing vacuum lines.
For the exhaust studs, there is a GM part you can use to replace them with e-torx making the job a million times easier next time.
Its also worth mentioning that if you haven't already, replace the fuel lines going to the rail. It was a factory recall in the 80s, and its probably time to replace what the dealer did back then. Check out larts' parts on ebay for the best hose kit.

  • @Tremonte
    @Tremonte 3 года назад

Definitely oil cooler. Both internal and external seals have failed. That is where a lot of your oil leak is coming from. Your motor mounts are also shot. That's why you had a hard time removing the manifolds. Easiest way to change all of that is from above. Use an engine support bar or a board the size of the oil pan and floor jack. Remove the water tube by the headers, then unbolt the exhaust. 17MM ratchet wrench will slip between the control arm bushing to release the lower motor mount nut. With engine supported, unbolt the entire motor mount brace and remove everything at once. Drop the new motor mount into the cross brace, then install the support onto the mount. Bolt it all back up and done. Remove oil cooler while headers are still out, clean it all up, reseal and reassemble with alignment tool. Make sure to flush the system really well with cleaner to get all the oil out. Driver side motor mount is even easier from above. Just remove the air box while the engine is still suported, unbolt the entire motor mount assembly and replace just the same as passenger side. More room over there. These cars are incredibly fun to drive and not very hard to work on and maintain.

As they get older they get cheaper and a lot of maintenance gets deferred because the people who bought them cheap did not have the money to maintain them. The cost of parts is a big factor.

Non-Porsche mechanic here, just an 85 944 owner/enthusiast...another source of that glorious sludge comes from the power steering reservoir located high and proud and in the way. It's about $22 from FCP Euro but it has a built in filter, is easy to swap and bleed out and will eliminate at least one source of the schmutz caking up on the underbelly of the 944. Also I'll be the next fella to remind you that thermostat replacement is engineered by Satan's helpers but phosphate free coolant is the send off on this journey. Cheers!

i have an 87 also, the exhaust comes off easy and the studs can stay, 100% the oil cooler seals. i cant remember but i think i dropped the entire exhaust off the car and took the manifolds out the bottom. and most of that oil leak if not all of it is from the cam tower seal, not a terrible job to do, just tedious.

And you already are setup for a automatic so if you do it you can use whatever gm trans works and just make it fit and work with the linkage setup it has.

This car sounds more and more like it wants an LFX swap. I think it would make for a major reduction in reliability issues and cost down the road with little if any weight penalty. You are already familiar with the torque and hp output of the LFX. It would make it an even more fun to drive car.

I'm gonna guess both the head gasket and oil cooler are leaking. It started out as just the head gasket, but the added pressure to the coolant system due to the combustion gases...blew the oil cooler seals. Necessary maintenance on these at this age. While you are at it, reseal the balance shaft cover on that side, as the o-ring on that will leak due to shrinkage. It will take about 5 flushes to get it clean, then reward yourself with a new coolant tank, that will crack eventually based on the color and looks of it.

I enjoy your channel but would second TheMrSnyder's comments. Some basic diagnostics of a head gasket (or not) would save you LOTS of time. Oil cooler would be the first thing, particularly as you don't have a mud pit in your sump. I recall seeing the 944 timing belt tensioning tool - you need it to do the job correctly.

I did the timing belt on mine twice because I was missing a bolt. Based on the urging of a coworker I pulled the camshaft assembly back off and and the missing bolt was inside.

The only way to fix those Porsche 944s is to put a high performance GM LS or LT V8 with the GM adapter kit. Trust me you'll love it!

It's funny JR how everyone encourages and urges you to do this and do that, but few suggest you restore this car to what it could be if properly restored to mint condition. One day these will become very rare and could be worth a load of $s. Here in the UK for a really nice tidy example you will pay between 8k and 23k £sterling. Worth a thought. My mate has one he has had from new and he just sold it for way over £20k with lunar miles on it!!!
    Stay safe
    Cheers, Bob

Replace the oil filter with one from K&N. It has a one inch nut on the top making removal with a socket easy. My 968 uses part number HP-4001, yours should as well. K&N HP-4001 Performance Gold Oil Filter Fits 83-95 Porsche 911/924/944/968

I don’t know if you’ve replaced the little fuel line from the fuel pressure dampener (at the front of the fuel rail) to the fuel rail. These are notorious for cracking due to age and spraying fuel right on the headers. It’s a cheap part, replace it! If the old one is hard it’s about ready to break.

I did it in the parking lot of my insurance company when I was getting insurance on my new to me 06 Charger RT with 90k. Gal walking up to her car jumped and I said sorry I must have hit a button and she laughed and said it's alright, she does it all the time.
Maybe it's not just a Ford thing and Mopar wants in on the action too.

Remember to check the oil cooler if it's with a water heat exchanger. They tend to rot and mix oil and coolant.

i know how you feel just helped a guy i worked with with his 944 we sent out the head for a pressure test and a port and polish. the head was fine didnt need to be milled. the port and polish did help wake it up a little but it needed new valve guides because it did a puff of blue smoke when it started. after we got it back together it runs like a dream like it did before. we did put on the same static clutch on it when the head was out in the machine shop. we did do the front and back rear main and the oil pan gasket while we were there. it is one of the few cars people dig at the cars and coffie down here. just because it is also a barn find. the driver seat does need attention from a place that can redo the matterial do to florida dry rot the dash we ended up getting from a rear ended one. but the seats were taken unfortunitly but i know how you feel on noooo it is doing this. but the bright side it does now have new ac and heater core inside the car while the dash was out. as a new radiator we stuck a camera in them dear go how curoded they were
