Been a tech going on 21 years, I have a stationary box with all my diag tools and the same cart as your red one set up similar, makes me a good living. Kid next to me probably has $50k worth of snap on with the big'ol box and all... does brakes and tires all day😂
Then jokes are best used for Long pry bars and breaker bars and extensions I would recommend it if you don’t need those bigger tools I get it but any other reason you save so much space using them holes buddy
What a breath of fresh air, nice to see some real stuff on youtube for a change, I always like a tool board more than a tool box and you combining the two makes perfect sense.
Your workflow and memorization is super impressive. I am amazed. Love it. And your concept is called "The First Order of Retrievability". You're using it wisely.
Bro that is the worst US General cart you can get. I work maintenance and 90% of the guys have those carts and when you push them several miles a day they don’t last. They also don’t have enough storage. He done right with getting the 6 drawer service cart. I’ve been using the green one for a year now and I have nothing but god things to say about it. I do have 2 complaints about that box though. The castors suck. I had to put a bigger set on there because stuff kept jamming up my castor because it gets jammed between that and the brake. On a clean floor it would be fine. Next is the lock. You can unlock those boxes and then open the drawers with the top hatch closed. Problem is when you hit a crack or something hard then that latch locks so you have to open the latch to unlock everything again. You do have to have that shelf on the side so you can lay all the tools you’re using on it. Problem is don’t go pushing it around with all your tools on it. I don’t know how many times I hit a crack and that table fell down spilling all my tools. Ha ha. That shit sucks especially if you have a set of sockets laying on it. I’m definitely another guy that thinks buying snap on and Matco is stupid unless you get a good deal on the box.
"can't tell you how many times my tool cart has caught on fire" never have I ever heard that before, hillarious Looks like a seasoned mechanic from the 80's built a time machine and jumped into the 21st century, freakin fantastic set up, it would drive me nuts personally, but I smiled earlier to ear watching, I bet you'd be a blast to work beside
I feel like back in the day a lot of mechanics didnt have much choice but to go with the tool truck brands but now theres so many good options and most carry lifetime warrantie.
This video is perfect timing for me. I'm in the market for my first toolbox and needed ideas on organizing or sorting all my tools. All my tools are currently hung up on a pegboard wall. But I'd like a box that can roll closer to me.
Brother, i have wrenched for 2 decades, 2-3 jobs, 90 hours a week and you are correct Top quality tools are better for some situations , they are nice to have but not necessary If I return to wrenching full time, I'm investing in other brands Earned a subscription
I think that’s a pretty good setup. I have my grandads old craftsmen tool box. Shallow drawls. I hate it but I’ll use it forever. I have magnets on the wall for all my wrenches.
I really enjoyed this. Thank you for your testimony of the wear and tear from the high torque electric impact. Really makes me feel justified as my ac delco "walked" off the shop floor earier this week (why did my cheap a$$ impact go missing in a shop filled with much more expensive boxes/tools? Wth 😢 i digress) anyway after complaining of the fatigue I went through all week running my Kobalt Xtr 1/2, my amazing wife took me to the freight last night on an after work tool-shopping date with the 25% off coupon and picked me up a new mcgraw 1/2 air-impact for under 50 doll hairs. I appreciate her greatly, she is the best. I exited to try it out on Monday.
I love the full bank cart. It is absolutely perfect to fit everything. I started a new job abt 2 years ago and have outfitted my whole box without tool trucks. Went with tekton for 80% of my stuff.
Finally a real setup, I’ve got a cart that resembles your old setup and it’s made more $ then I ever did when I had a triple bank Mac box. You gave me some more ideas to modify the lid than I already have. Thanks for the video
I have husky tool chests and harbor freight roll cart. I learned over the years expensive or name brand isn't always best. My favorite tools are cheaper ones
I use the same exact cart for body work. i pulled the drawer locks out and its the best! Its Easier to pull the drawers out and you can still lock them as well! highly recommended!
I have that same USG cart in my service van and used the screw driver holes, drilled them with a step bit and used it for all my ratchets I don’t daily use and all my pry bars. I used the top for all my sockets. I got the whole top with the those mag strips from HF and they don’t move at all, just for another idea.
The minute you say "You know how my toolbox is always catching on fire?" You know its time to rethink things a little lol. I totally get your organization process, but I do think you could fit a lot more, and more importantly, make it more accessible, if you bare minimum had some grid style socket organization , simple wrench rack and maybe a vertical plier rack? All cheap fixes that stand things up vertically to take advantage of the taller drawer height. Beautiful shop man👍...Extra points for 'Wiggle Sockets'
That turned out awesome. With you locking the lid in place maybe also cut off the front lip for easier access to the top bin. Or you could cut a few inches out to open it up
Could put a piece of river along the sides with X slits on the holes to keep stuff from dropping through and still be able to use them. Pry bars go well in there. I made a mount for a packout crate bin to go under my folding table on my 5 drawer and use it for rigging and straps. I'm a technician doing aviation testing. I keep towels, gloves, a few pig mats and some spring clamps in between the two. Other side has the handle with clamps and a trash pouch then the fluids tray it came with below that. Pretty good setup for me. I do more millwright type work than A&P stuff.
Hay bud not trying to get to personal but I'm thinking about putting a house in my shop like you got would you do a house tour so I could see how much room it would have and conveniences, I think it's bad ass perfect shop thanks bud
As a plant maintenance supervisor, I'd hire you in a second after seeing this video. And yes, thievery is abundant so locking up everything is necessary, even drain cleaner and ceiling tiles 😅
Dang this is impressive. I have a Matco 4s with a hutch that I honestly absolutely love. I know it's expensive but I'll never have to buy a box ever again in my life and it'll eventually go to one of my kids. I do use a HF cart like this to roll around the plant. I cut the lid off of it entirely. Love it a ton. Great video.
For the wrenches - My first thought was gluing a bunch of Toolbox Widget organizers with the magnets to another magnet strip and putting that on the lid. The toolbox widget magnetic wrench organizers might have strong enough magnets that if might be able to just stick them on the lid and call it a day.
For the deeper drawers I watched a video where the guy added 3/4” x 2 1/2 or 3” wood strips on the back and front. Then he made a wooden shelf section about half the width of the drawer that slides left and right on those strips and therefore it allowed him to have two layers in the drawer. Just a thought as I have the same box and I wished one drawer was made into two shallower drawers.
i would suggest a shelf on the back side you can put a plastic jug and add a magnet to a funnel. that way you can stick the end of the funnel into the jug to let it drain off what is left in the funnel into the jug, and it will help keep you tool box cleaner.
After 14 years I out grew my red 5 drawer cart and moved into a green box like you have . I see some ideas that I might try in my box . Something I did was removed the lock because it sticks out into the interior of the box where I will put something ? After all the lid will likely never be closed .The lid on my 5 drawer box has been closed one time in the 14 years I used it, when I rolled it out for the last time .
Dex I fuck with you and your vibe your straight up and cool as shit I could watch your videos all day ! Big love from edgemere Maryland ! I got a 00 4Runner lifted 5 inches on 35s !!!
just entering the industry and ive just got husky socket set and it works way better than i thought it would, used um to torque down jake studs flywheel bolts, did the job just fine, bought some snap-on ratchets just bc I love how smooth they are plus the sep program they have cuts the price in half, and a capri master impact set
also have a sunex 3/8 impact set first time using the 10" extension the ball flew out. I sent 2 emails to their warranty department and in 3 days I had a replacement no questions asked
Bolt some angle iron on the front and back of the deep drawer and put a square pan you can slide left and right on the angle aluminum to reclaim that wasted upper space.
I so will use this to better plan my cart once I have the room to use it. I have the 42 ?? Or 44 ?? From harbor freight both top and bottom just to start my organization of tools . I also love magnets in my toolbox but currently i just grab what I need go outside and lay them wherever works for the task at hand.
The nice thing about the hf boxes is they are decent but cheap enough that you dont care to drill a hole in it to make it work best for you i did that with my 5 drawer cart before i stupidly got my dream snap on box
I replaced the subframes on a 05 liberty once. Is that the kind of work you do? Omg what a pita but when it was done I sure felt like I accomplished something. This was a great video. Thank you for sharing your skills knowledge and experience. I appreciate you
Well I just found you. Watched this toolbox switch over video. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ll check out your other stuff. I suffer from the same issues that you have…. A place for everything… everything in its place. Find it fast. Grab it. Use it. Put it back (where it’s supposed to go). Going to watch more of your content. Watching from Ontario Canada. 🎉
kitchen drawer organizers. also look into slinky springs. they have beefy ones that you can use to organize wrenches it’s slick. wish i could explain better but you’ve probably seen it
Great video. Love the way you think. Buy snap on, pay for the name. Buy cheaper, i. e., Craftsman, Kobalt, Harbor Freight, pay less works every bit as good. Amen bro.
Bruh!! The side mount handle is GENIUS! UGH, I have 2, 5 drwr carts and wanted to add a second top shelf! Awesome video and I'm I'm 100% in line with you as far as the "monkey" in "monkey wrench" is the more important word.
Bro get the tool grid system. Cheap and you can use so much space with things and color code the stuff also. It'll organize that too bud to however works for you.
As a mechanic I definitely want to address what you were saying at 2:45. The shop charges $175 an hour. Not the mechanic. And the mechanic doesnt receive anywhere near that number either. Even worse is the shops make mechanics buy their own tools.
I have an 84 inch snap on epiq with a hutch and a 40 inch slide top roll cart at work, at my rented garage I do side work out of a us general 52 inch, 36 inch, and roll cat, and at my home garage I have a us general roll cart, older us general box and a crappy craftsman box but man I work on everything from little lawn mowers, cars, mid-size trucks, light duty to heavy duty trucks, to internationals, to case equipment its an expensive career lol I do definitely regret the snap on box definitely could have done it cheaper lol

I feel like back in the day a lot of mechanics didnt have much choice but to go with the tool truck brands but now theres so many good options and most carry lifetime warrantie.
Agreed. I got a few things from the trucks but mostly went to harbor freight and Sears then upgraded the things that broke

My dad and I have a whole wall of tool boxes, brimming with tools... Ive never put this amount of thought into it, but my god does it ever make sense
seriously love your setup. Using the lid for more storage is a great use of space, getting me thinking about how I could work that into mine.
I think that’s a pretty good setup. I have my grandads old craftsmen tool box. Shallow drawls. I hate it but I’ll use it forever. I have magnets on the wall for all my wrenches.

I also sort from biggest to smallest. I learned that from a guy I worked for who did the same thing and I’ve always done it that way since!
I have husky tool chests and harbor freight roll cart. I learned over the years expensive or name brand isn't always best. My favorite tools are cheaper ones
the tape over the holes is a great idea. i am going to do that with my 5 drawer. i use the holes but i think the tape will make it cleaner to use.
I'd say you have a library of tools and everyone tells a different story. Awsome.
I use the same exact cart for body work. i pulled the drawer locks out and its the best! Its Easier to pull the drawers out and you can still lock them as well! highly recommended!

That is a very neat idea with those magnet pads.
Has to be the best video I’ve watched in a long time. That was fun
What an awesome setup, Love to see someone who knows their box set up so well.
Magnet strips are the way to go for organizing wrenches and sockets. (and a lot more)
It's all about efficiency and speed. Good stuff.

Awesome video. Your excitement is infectious. Laying that old box to rest has to be tough though. Let us know what you do with it.
Bolt some angle iron on the front and back of the deep drawer and put a square pan you can slide left and right on the angle aluminum to reclaim that wasted upper space.
thank you for the video, it helped me figure out my toolbox and update mine as well.

Props dude. I like more of a cart. I wouldn’t want to roll that whole ass toolbox over to cars but my shop is not as wide open.
That’s the best set up is great
Looking good.
Looks good nice shop also.
Good job
Make a cleaning / lubricant chest out of old red box.
Love this video
Nice guy, I liked your set up
Bro get the tool grid system. Cheap and you can use so much space with things and color code the stuff also. It'll organize that too bud to however works for you.
If it works for you, then that is all you need it for.
The hardest choice about these boxes, is deciding which color to get. I decided on red.
The classic. I can’t decide between red and black but I’m leaning towards red
Us general wrench organizers can be hung and sweet setup I have something similar
My setup is almost identical except it’s spread across a two bay shed 👍
Can definitely tell you're a Cherokee guy. That's quite a hodgepodge of SAE and Metric
Hot damn nice setup.👍👍🇺🇸

What kind of where’d you get your magnet strips to hold the sockets at? Wayy smarter/ cheaper than getting actual socket holders 🔥
Dex, opening and closing drawers is a big waste of time! I agree.
You should look up us general 5 drawer stacked cart. I have built 2 of them and they are amazing. I have the 34 in bank cart but my stack cart is more versatile
I've had the same box 11 or 12 years now, only problem I had was being way over loaded and the wheels finally fell apart
New music too !
Hey dex when are we going to get a walk around of that unique goose neck trailer yall have to haul the jeeps. That would be a cool video
I got my 5 drawer for $20 full of tools probably 12 years. I've upgraded to a full drawer cart twice but I keep going back to it
Nice!
Buying this cart tomorrow on sale... any ideas to upgrade the casters? I want this thing to roll over a boulder was thinking of putting 8 inch tire casters on it
every good hoard is organized mess!
What are those oreilly magnet pads called? Can’t find them on their web site
I'm from Ohio and we call them wobbles instead of wiggles. I'm gonna start calling them wiggles.
How do you find so many tools just laying around, I have only ever found 1 tool a 14mm husky socket 😂
How do u keep your floor so clean and shiny?
get a rokform case for your phone. they come with a built in magnet and i stick my phone to front of my box.
Second the rokform case
I’ve had mine for 2 years. It’s definitely a little beat up. But still holding up great. I love the magnet on the back

Cut that lip down where the lock is for the top so its not as deep. Then put some hose or whatever I ver the cut
