Data Management at the Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis by Dr Emily Barker

In this webinar Dr Emily Barker will reviews the challenges and opportunities for data management at the Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis at the University of Western Australia.
The Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis (CMCA) has existed since the 1960s under several names. While it started as the Electron Microscopy Centre, it now hosts instruments for many techniques including x-ray microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, optical microscopy and scanning probe microscopy. The instruments all produce vastly different data types and with a large range of storage and metadata requirements, which creates a complex problem to tackle when attempting to find systems for research data management for the centre.
Creation of research data management systems are further complicated by the centre being spread across four buildings on two different campuses and there being no e-research department at the University of Western Australia. This webinar will outline how the Microscopy Australia node at CMCA has been handling research data management recently and where we might like to go from here.

Dr Emily Barker is the Microscopy Data Specialist at the Centre for Microscopy Characterisation and Analysis, having joined the centre last year. Emily helps the Microscopy Australia node at CMCA with all things data management and is working on homogenising and improving the data management practises.
