Cigar Ashtray Build: Multiple Designs

- With this build I set out to make multiple different designs for cigar ashtrays. I started with inspiration from a cigar ashtray I've had for a while. I wanted to make wooden ashtrays and I had a piece of sycamore and a piece of walnut that I thought would be a perfect fit for this project. I was really happy with how these projects turned out. My favorite would have to be the ones I made from walnut. I think the grain pattern on the sycamore looks very cool, I just have a personal preference for the look of walnut. Feel free to share with me the designs you like the best or ways in which you think I could improve on these designs.

Nice!
Thank you!
Great work!
I agree with you on making the grooves for the cigars a bit bigger. Otherwise you have some great ash trays!
Thank you! Yeah, I started to make larger ashtrays, and someone suggested using a 1-inch forstner bit to make the grooves 1 inch wide and 1/2 inch deep. I like that a lot better, it fits a wide range of cigars more comfortably.
I would make the cigar troughs a bit bigger for bigger cigars but other than that....VERY NICE WORK!
I realized this after seeing how the cigars fit in 🤣. Right now I like using a 1 inch forstner bit for the cigar troughs on my bigger ashtrays. I feel like it is much more accommodating for the bigger cigars. Thank you for the feedback and support!
@@310fabrication They definitely sit better on a bigger trough don't they? You do nice work! I like what you are doing!
Yeah, I recently picked up some cigars with a ring gauge of 50 and they fit beautifully in my personal ashtray with the same 1 inch troughs. There is even extra room for larger ring gauges as well. Thank you for the kind words!
Beautiful pieces
Thank you! I loved these first designs, perfect for cigars with a smaller diameter.
great work thank you for sharing, am trying to make my first one, what finish you think i can use to sustain the heat?
I'm currently looking to try a new finish. Right now, I use linseed oil and then a clear polycrylic. I haven't looked into a finish that will sustain heat. In theory, the ash from a cigar should be cool when it falls into the ashtray.
You know you can make a revolver style ashtray easily using the same method for these. It would be cool af
I'm interested, can you elaborate on the revolver style ashtray. I have an idea of what you mean, but not 100% sure.
Cool designs. I’m going to try to make a couple. What is the final thickness of your ashtrays? Thanks for the inspiration
You're welcome, thank you for watching! The thickness of the sycamore prototype single ashtray was 1-3/4 inches. As for the two single sycamore ashtrays where I reduced the thickness, the final thickness on those was 1-3/8 inches. For the triangle and circle ashtrays made from walnut the thickness was 1 inch.
This already looks like the firing chamber of a revolver 4:08
I didn't even think about it like that. I have to agree that would be cool af. Now you got me thinking 🤣
Aslo, where did you get the cool tools for sanding the bowls? I’ve been struggling with hand sanding.
I was struggling to hand sand the insides of trays for some time now. I bought the pneumatic air sander I used in the video from Amazon because I didn't know how well it would work, so I wanted something cheaper. I can't remember the exact brand but it comes with 1, 2 and 3 inch pads. I find it works well enough, I only use it to sand the flat bottom. For the inside corners and to knock down the edge that was left after routing I used these sanding pads I made that I use in my drill. I think I still have the video on my channel. The version I made only works with adhesive backed sandpaper, but I am sure a similar design could be made/bought that incorporates hook and loop sandpaper. I hope this helps! I'm still on the lookout for better sanding solutions, let me know if you find anything.
Great job. What CNC machine do you have?
Thank you! I'm working on a video to show improved designs. I have a small desktop CNC. It's a YoraHome 3036.
What program do you use with your machine?
I use Easel for the spindle and LightBurn for the laser.
What type of oil did you use to finish them with?
For these, I just used boiled linseed oil, and then I followed that with two coats of polycrylic.
@@310fabrication Thanks, appreciate it.
