BCCI Appoints Gambhir as Head Coach, Kohli Wasn’t Consulted | ISH News

After the ICC T20 World Cup, Rahul Dravid’s term as India’s head coach ended, and the search for the new coach began. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) invited applications from across the country, using a Google Form, which led to over 3,400 fake applications and social media jokes.
By mid-June, rumors of Gautam Gambhir being selected as the next head coach spread. On 9th July 2024, BCCI officially announced Gambhir’s appointment, with a term ending on 31st December 2027. Gambhir, a former opening batsman, will work closely with VVS Laxman and coaches from the National Cricket Academy (NCA).
Gambhir’s first challenge is the upcoming series against Sri Lanka, starting on 27th July 2024. At the announcement, Gambhir expressed his honor and excitement to serve his country and praised Rahul Dravid for his excellent work with the team.
The BCCI has allowed Gambhir to choose his support staff, though final decisions rest with the board. Suggested names for the support staff include Abhishek Nair, Vinay Kumar, and Jonty Rhodes.
Interestingly, Virat Kohli, a senior player and former captain, was not consulted about Gambhir’s appointment. This has raised questions about their already strained relationship.
Gambhir is known for his batting skills and strategic decisions, which helped India win the 2007 ICC World T20 and the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. He has also mentored IPL teams, leading Kolkata Knight Riders to a trophy this year.
Meanwhile, both Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid decided to forgo part of their prize money to ensure that the support staff is well-rewarded for their hard work.
