My male sulcata tortoise is 11yrs old n he’s over 100lbs and the size of a trash can lid. They grow super fast if their raised outside and fed the proper food. Congratulations Houston
Houston needs to read up on the care and feeding requirements of these type of tortoises, how long they live, housing needs in summer and winter, illnesses, what they can't eat, etc. More of a responsibility than your average box turtle that lives on your property! Good luck and have a blessed day!
I completely agree. People that don’t live in say Florida where they can stay outside all year do bring them inside during the winter. Seeing as they get snow in Oklahoma an DJ doesn’t want it inside 😬 The tortoise will likely out live Houston as well.
Hopefully they researched all that you mentioned BEFORE they agreed to having the tortoise. If not, then yes, I do hope Houston takes on this huge responsibility like a champ and does the necessary research and then implement that, without losing interest. These little guys will more than likely outlive them, so not only will they need to make sure they stay committed in the care of this tortoise for the rest of their lives, but also make sure they can provide care for the rest of the tortoises natural life.
My daughter had several Sulcata tortoise during her early years as a herptologist, the first of which she named Olivia. It was winter when Olivia came to live with us so my daughter made her a home underneath her bed in a cardboard box. Every morning Olivia would come out of her box and walk down the hall to the kitchen and sit down infront of the refrigerator and wait for someone to get her Romain Lettuce, carrots, or celery out of the refrigerator for her breakfast. Then she would go to an east facing window and find a patch on sunshine and sun until the sun went away. Then she would go back to her box and sleep most of the rest of the day. My wife and I miss Olivia now that our daughter has moved away and has a family of her own.
That was so interesting to see the animals up close! It figures that Houston would end up taking home a turtle! That thing will grow really big . Thanks for sharing your visit with us. God bless you all!
Houston, just so you know, this Sulcata Tortoise (aka African-spurred tortoise) will probably outlive you! You need to put him in a will for your kids and grandkids! They are the 3rd largest tortoises in the world, and can list 80-125+yrs, and reach 300lbs! When they hatch, they are the size of a round golf ball. The Galapagos tortoise (the largest), can live over 150yrs! Darwin(ask Dad about Darwin and his time period) owned a Galapagos tortoise that just passed away about 8yrs ago, that was at the Australian Zoo (Steve Irwin aka The Crocodile Hunter). Things to think about on his care. Lots of sunshine, and some shade. Lots of veggies and a bit of fruit and they will graze on grass. They will tunnel, sometimes, 20ft downward and across, during the winter to brumate (hibernate). I have a friend that dug a deep pit 4ft deep (about 6ft by 6ft minimum L and W) in his yard, lined it with concrete and added a big wooden box above the pit (so he could access the pit, added a heat source and a bit of dirt on top of the concrete, and the tortoise would stay down in the hole on cold days. Otherwise, he would dig to China or the neighboring yards. Can you imagine going out into your back yard and walk up on a 300 lb tortoise in your yard! lol. They pretty much just dig preparing for Winter. Definitely do some research on him, since he's gonna have a LONG life! Have fun with him!!!

So funny how this was almost a year ago and the kids were in the pen with a zebra and an ostrich - and here you are now awaiting the arrival of your little treasure Sue the ostrich. I hope you all will love it and handle it so it stays people friendly. I can't wait!
FYI Sulcatta tortoises love to dig and do so very well. You need to bury heavy gauge wire and /or concrete the inside perimeter of the enclosure so he doesn't dig a burrow under the was and escape. Enjoy these wonderful creatures!
Sad to hear about Bo, but such is life… he is in that pasture in the sky being the best heavenly alpaca he could ever imagine being! What a cool little place that is! Looked like a whole lot of fun!
My great aunt in Ohio had a desert tortoise named Mark. They had the yard fenced in for the dogs and Mark would just hang out in the yard. Then every year he’d crawl under the deck to hibernate but my great uncle would crawl under there, grab Mark, and stick him in their basement. Mark would crawl behind the hot water heater and hibernate there. He was 49 when they donated him to a sanctuary after my aunt passed. I miss old Mark. As a kid I’d spend hours with him when we’d visit.
Great family video. Houston gets a tortoise! That boy is very privileged. They are work and need cares. Have seen him with animals and I am confident he will learn it and will follow thru. Thanks for the video.
Serval's are the 2nd fastest land animal and they're extremely confident too. Caracal's sort of look like a small Mt. lion. Both felines can be in the home, but the need open space to run. When I met my wife she had a Serval named Rudy. He was so cool to hang with. He lived for 19 years and passed of natural causes.

It's hard to believe how much Huston has grown. His lucky day. Receiving is always fun when you're a kid and great opportunity to find a way to pay it forward or donate back.
It breaks my heart to see so many animals confined in small cages, especially in the hot OK heat. Modern zoos keep their animals in more natural habitats. Sorry to see Pasty is now caged and doesn't get sprinkler time or grazing time.
If you’re referring to the baby kangaroo, she’s still pouch reliant and bottle fed. She will be put in the big kangaroo pen soon. They have a lot more room to roam than it shows in the video, as well as shade and water to cool off in. Patsy definitely still gets to graze and play in water.
I’m an Australian who lives in an area rich in native wildlife. I’m so sad to see that kangaroo struggling against being held. Their body isn’t designed to be scrunched up to be cuddled. They’re not solitary animals. They live in mobs of 10 or more kangaroos. Poor kangaroo. I don’t know about any of the other animals but keeping them in cages seems so cruel.
@@barbshooter7635 Mine too. There’s a mob of Kangaroos who graze on a grassy block of land just down the road from my house. They’re there daily. We’ve had kangaroos and koalas in our street and on our property. It’s beautiful to see them free, not in cages.
