This is a sensory educational material that is used in a Montessori setting. There are many variations of this activity to help a child understand size and develop digital skills.
They are often used by other schools, such as Waldorf.
I make them by woodturning the cylinders on the lathe, then I create the holes to receive them in a long block of wood.
I made a template for woodturning from the same drill bits that I use to create the holes and I cut it down the centre. this makes it easy to gauge the diameter of each cylinder while turning them as I make the different sizes from a single piece of wood.
I used some recycled wood from an old garden fence :)
I finished the toy using Organic Boiled Linseed Oil
I like the idea of making my own Tools, especially if it is a Tool that is not easily found or readily available. Handmade Tools give great satisfaction and for me it is fun knowing that I created something to help me better improve my woodworking experience.

I remember playing with toys like this all throughout my early childhood. Sadly now, there an app for it on every electronic device, but nothing beats the real feeling of holding something and "figuring it out" for yourself. Great little project!

Me too my friend :) I'm still playing with them in my workshop :) I think if I grew up in a more technological age as it is now, I would probably be trying to hammer nails into wood using my phone :D I am lucky that my son is interested in watching something and copying it by action :) Take care my friend and blessings from us here ॐ

Must be a little warmer today Yogi. I see you only have a sweater on. I’m glad for you. Interesting build. I can’t say I’ve ever seen those before. Really nice though. Thanks for sharing Yogi!

Thank you Becky :) Yes it is warming now :) I'm finally able to use my tools without getting my hands too cold. I will try and improve the workshop before next winter so that I can continue to work :) ॐ
