In folklore corn dolls are said to contain within them the ‘spirit of the corn’. They were traditionally made from the initial harvest and kept in barns or homes until the next harvest was sown, then the doll would be placed in the first furrow made to return the ‘spirit of the corn’ to the soil. This was said to guarantee a bountiful crop for the next harvest.
