The 45!! I’m a runner but more of a gymgoer so I went with that one, bought it today! Unfortunately don’t have it for my Duke of Edinburgh expedition this weekend
Hi Shane, thank you for listening to us and making this comparison video. Really appreciate your detailed review. I was already leaning on the 45 and this video simply re-affirms my decision. Guess 4 years of R&D does make a huge difference on heart rate detection accuracy. Also, looks like the detector on the 45 is more comfortable since it’s relatively flatter. I plan to run in a half marathon next year and look forward to more videos on running gear, tips, tutorials from you. Cheers
Hey Ivan. Really appreciate your comments. I was trying to keep the review down to an easily watchable level so I did t mention the back of the watches with the 45 heart sensor being flatter but I did hint at it with some footage.... You are completely right. Enjoy the half marathon journey, it's a great distance to train for!!😎
Hey Shane, thanks for the video! It was interesting to see the comparison. I was surprised how the HRM was "slower" on the 235. I guess the technology got a bit advanced in the last 3.5-4 years. :-) It was good to see how the two match up, since they're almost in the same price range. Thanks for the video again! Keep up the good work!
Great review - I like how you addressed it. Simple and to the point. I actually had opted for the 45 since it was too close to call but it was newer tech. I figured as a new runner I wouldn't really feel the difference. And the 45 was (in May 2019) $50-75 less. However, fate intervened. The 45 was back ordered through 2 months almost. And the 235 was discounted. I am the proud new owner of a 235 3-5Ks later and plenty of training sessions - I love it!! I cycle too so I just use my Garmin heart-rate strap to have my HR accurately displayed. Keep up the good work Shanebow Looking forward to your videos - New Subscriber
Hey Gabriel. That's awesome!! I should have sold on my 235 by now... but I just can't yet, it did me too well through marathons and half marathons. It's a great watch and a great investment to help you stay consistent with your running. Have fun and thanks loads for your comments 😎🏃😎
Thanks very much for your reviews. Love your hard work on these, the information you provide, really well presented, and big plus that you are a genuine runner with history on the 235. For me the 45, 245 and 235 comparisons were really valid. Interesting that one reviewer was torn over the price comparison between 45 and life style watches such as apple at about same price point, latter watches offering so much more - so how then does the 245 (without music) look at 50% increase in price and marginal(?) benefits for the casual runner. Based on your reviews, I would now be comfortable buying the 45. Notably from your reviews, looks great, responsive and does most things. Thanks again.
@@shanebow I need a watch to track how much did I run during my ( Indoor ) futsal game! Is 45 good enough for that or do I need something better?! Thank you!
I'm a rower (indoor) who has just started running a few weeks back(half marathon this weekend!), this was the perfect comparison for me - has to be the 45, more accurate HRM, plus ability to mark out a range of other workouts (which I was surprised to see didn't exist on the 235, even my old Polar A300 has that!)
Great videos and nicely put together. Covers all the points I would want from a video review. I’m currently looking for an upgrade from my trusty forerunner 10! Am currently leaning towards the forerunner 45 but will also be looking at the 245
@@shanebow Hey Shane! Couple questions for you: What's the warranty on the F45 & do you think it's worth getting the additional warranty that's offered whether through Amazon or Best Buy (I think most places offer them)? Thanks again! 😊
Good work and thanks! I do have one question/quibble though: The HR sensor is supposedly quite sensitive to placement of the device, as a sanity check it would have been nice to see if the HR test results were reversed if the positions were swapped, or perhaps if they were more comparable if you wore one on each wrist? I can't imagine the technology has come on from a hardware perspective so much in the last few years (though they may use a different lens which could have a significant impact) but a different firmware may impact the HR sensor significantly - do they have a firmware update utility? Also, is the 45 Connect IQ enabled? If so there may be an app to apply something akin to the data screen of the 235?
Hey G Bus, there are no widgets or data screens for the 45 from connect IQ, there are watch faces you can get. If I had my 45 with me I'd make a little video for you to test the heart rate. I will try and post one on the weekend for you and tag you 😎
@@shanebow Thanks, but please don't put yourself out! It is actually a moot point now as I just now purchased a 235 as it is on a flash sale on Amazon :) The HR sensor for me is a nice to have, and if I do feel that I need it to be accurate and reliable I can perhaps ask Santa for a chest mounted HR monitor! To be honest neither will be good for tracking weights. For his Running the 235 does have extra facilities, so I'd go for that one unless he wanted simplicity. Well done on signing up to your first 50k, that's a brilliant distance! Enjoy the training!🥇
Hi Shane, Thanks for the video! It was interesting to see the comparison ... I only have one question ... I am a Road & MTBiker ... Would you recommend the 45 for cycling?
@@shanebow Thank you very much for the quick reply ... Much appreciated. I am from South Africa and am actually pressured to buy a new HR/GPS watch. I am with Discovery Vitality and as from 10 July 2019, all TomTom fitness devices will no longer be compatible with Vitality and therefore members who have their TomTom fitness device linked will no longer be able to earn Vitality fitness points. What would you recommend?
Great thanks for that! Just a quick question I’ve found some reviews online stating that it’s possible to skip your music on your phone with the 45 and 245 but others have said this is only with the 245 music? Do you know whether this is possible on the 45 and 245?
Currently training for my first marathon using the Nike Running app and a Fitbit Charge HR (even though they don’t sync directly.) I am extremely torn between the 45 and 235 - thoughts?
I would go for the 235 for those data screens. You will get so much out of it if you add the marathon training plan on to it. I've made a video on how to add it. Enjoy the marathon training 😎
I need a watch to see big numbers w/o using glasses when I am running (8 - 12Km) and to trace accurate bpm and pace... which will work better? I don't need music or sms
Hi Shane, Love your videos. Does the 45 give you a race predictor or can a widget do that for it? As I understand too, there is no map functionality with it but the 245 has that. Is that right? Thanks for your help. Still deciding.
Thanks for this great video. However I am still puzzling which to choose when it comes to replace my old FR610. I am a relatively oldie runner with 20+ marathons so far, and recently I've become blear-eyed. Of course I do not want to wear glasses while running, but still want to be able to read the most basic data ( distance, time, current pace) in a jiff while running. Unfortunately this has become THE most important consideration :(( Which of the two would you suggest for me? I know that 235 has bigger sized screen, but what about the actual readibility of the data?
Thanks for that!!! 20+ marathons is awesome. Hope to be there one day!! I'd go for the 235 as it gives you the headings for the stats. Also there are some datascreens you can add on with really clear writing on. I hate plugging my own videos... And only do it rarely but take a look at my data screen video to see what the benefits are of the extra screens. Keep running!🥇
@@shanebow Hi, I've just come across a 150 EUR offer for the FR45, so purchased it without hesitation. As for the size of the data on screen, I found no real difference between the 45 and 235. Neither use the entire space of the screen. In this respect the 245 would be a real difference, but it is an other (price) dimension....
Hi very nice video !!! I'm using an old TomTom Spark and the battery is not that great anymore and I'm looking to buy another GPS watch. I actually wanted a newer TomTom because I really like the buttons on the strap but realized that they don't do watches anymore. I run , cycle and MTB and use Strava as well. Good battery life is a must also. I thank to anyone that can help me
Would you do a review of the Forerunner45 vs Vivoactive3 ? They are similar in price and both have Garmin coach support which I would like to use to train for half marathon. I started running a few years ago at age 50 and am up to 25-30miles per week - also started to do bodyweight exercise and would like to track those on a good app. Thanks!
There is 100% a viviactive 3 review in the pipeline. 25 - 30 miles is brilliant! You are in a great place to train for a half marathon with that level of base fitness 😎
@@shanebow Thanks for the quick response. FYI, I am currently using the free MapMyRun app on Android phone so I am looking for a watch that tracks HR and can display cadence reliably while running. Looking forward to your FR45 vs VA3 review. Keep up the great work 👍
So here's my question. It says both have a vo2 max estimator on the info pages I've read. Because it uses heart rate and pace as the components for this, would you say there would be a noticeable difference in favor of the 45as far as vo2 max estimation goes because of its superior heart rate sensor?
I enjoy seeing how many flights of stairs I have climbed, as well as my elevation gain/loss during my runs. Are the two of these capable of giving me that information? Thanks for the video, I'm currently in limbo between the two.
Hello, I want to buy a garmin watch.. I'm a basic runner for the moment..doubt is Fr 45 Or Fr735xt Layout Fr45 is very bad..no name for time, lap ecc.. Help please..
I know what you mean. Maybe You'll get used to the times, Put them in the order of importance to you maybe? There are some cracking deals on 735 too. The OS will be quicker on the 45. My choice is 45 if that helps
Hello, thanks for all your great informative videos. Question: I’ve been using a Garmin 35 for running and have found the data - in particular, distance and heart rate - to be extremely erratic and unreliable. I plan to upgrade to a 235, 45, or possibly 245 depending on finances. Do you think I will get noticeably better results with the 45, 235 and 245? I live in New York City, and perhaps GPS has a hard time here. Will the addition of Glonass (not on 35) help? Are the heart rate monitors different on the 235 and 245? Thanks!
Hey Mike! I ran through downtown and into central park 18 months ago! What ana amazing place to be a runner with the bridges and all the routes you have!!!! I'm not sure what satellite is like for others but I had a 235 at the time and it worked really well. The 245 is quicker at responding to heart rate changes but they were about the same
The watch has the GPS chipset built in. So you can leave your phone at home when you run. The watch connects to the satellites and then saves all the information. When you get home it'll connect to your phone automatically then sync all the data. It works well. Does that answer your question ok? 👍
so it will connect to the garmin app and/or strava once you come near ur phone to sync it right? sorry im asking so many questions just want to make sure i know all i can before getting it haha thanks
Hey Ben! Thanks for the question. Not right now but it's something for the future for sure. Be great to take them both out and look at the maps and GPS accuracy
Hey Shane I'm looking to buy a fitness tracker watch for running. What I'm mainly looking for is an accurate heart tracker that can record my heart rate 24/7. I'm not too active right now but have been trying to get into running. I want to be able to track my heart rate as I continue running and see how it changes over time(resting heart rate decreasing). I've set my budget around $200 and have found the forerunner 45, forerunner 235, and vivoactive 3. They all seem really nice and I've been having a tough time deciding on which to buy. Really I'd want to get the forerunner 245 but at $300 it's pretty expensive as someone just starting to get into this. I saw you said that the 235 has a sort of lag time of 7 second for the heart rate tracker and doesn't track that well in interval training. I really like the extra widgets and replaceable watchstraps of the 235. I want to wear the watch all day mainly to track my heart rate also throughout the day. I'm mainly going to be running just to improve my cardio and lower my resting heart rate. (Honestly I still need to research more about what the exact types of running I should do for this and whether or not interval training is something I'd be doing or not. If it isn't then I don't think that I should be too worried about that lag time.) I'm not too interested in the 45's extra gym features. What do you think? I'd also love to know where you think the vivoactive falls inbetween all this and if it should be considered as an option. Thanks again for the great videos!
Thanks for the questions🏆prize for longest comments yet 😎. The vivoactive is nice and has nice hardware with touchscreen and stainless steel rim. Forerunner 245 is more focused on fitness, you may really like the pulse ox readings. To me it sounds like you are very focused and are analytical, I'd be going with the 245 and know that you're not going to upgrade it for quite a while. You are investing in your health and where some spend on gym membership you are investing in your watch and the world is your gym. It's a really nice looking comfortable watch too. I hope this helps
@@shanebow I know that other Sport-/Smartwatches support this, like the Honor Watch Magic, the Galaxy Smartwatches, Xiaomi's and so on. If you wake up you can immediately see how your sleep was. Especially for people with a sleep disorder this is important to know.
Hey Aditya 😎 it's a really tough question and you do a lot of miles. Have you watched my video all the way through? If it was me right now and I could only have one of those two I would go for the 235 as the data screens are Great.
@@shanebow Thank you for the prompt reply 🙂. I was confused as 45 is a new watch with new technology and hardware, so I thought it is better to go for it. Thank you once again mate 👍
@@adityasharma9030 please let me know how do you like the 45 as even I am a regular runner and planning to buy one. Confused between the two? Which one should I get?
Hey :) thank you very much for this video, it is really helpful. I like very much the 45 (even if the 235 maybe has more polished racing features), i guess it should be just okay for half marathons, daily runs and some gym stuff. But I also like to go on shorter trail runs (10km generally) and because of this I like very much the amazfit stratos...What is your opinion at forerunner 45 vs amazfit stratos? Thank you for helping me :)
The 45 will be great for half marathons. Set your 3 fave bits of data on the screen then your next on the screen below. Instead of having a race predictor data screen that the 235 would have just work out what pace you need to be at to come in at your goal time. So to come in for a sub 2 hour marathon just remember 5:41 per kilometer, or 9:09 per mile average pace would do that. Just set up the average pace data and you can keep a track on that. I've not used the amazfit yet but they do look smart and you get a lot for your money, I'm going to hold back an opinion until I've really tested one really well. Thanks loads for your comments and enjoy the training for your half marathon!
@@shanebow Thank you very much for your answer :) also it would be nice to see a video about forerunner 45/235 vs. vivoactive 3.... these 3 devices are exactly in the same price range nowdays (around $200, depends where you buy) and built for runners so it is quite a hard decision which to buy...
I deffo have a viviactive 3 arriving with me next week and will be comparing it with the 45 as you've made the case stronger for that as it's not the first time it's mentioned. Thanks for your support! 😎
None of them track swimming my friend. There is an app you can put on the 235 but it's not made by garmin and has mixed reviews. So as you seem to be looking for a choice between those two I will say go with the 235. It has extra screens you can add and extra data screens when running which I find really helpful
Thanks for the review, I got my 45 today.

There are great Amazon prime deals on the 235 at the moment too
Thanks so much. It was the Amazon deals that prompted me to consider these two and I went with the 235. Can’t wait.
Good review brotha
Cheers 😎
I just got the 45s as small wrists
Have some awesome runs with it
Does both watches have the “always on” feature where i don’t have to press buttons to see data on the screen?
Yes they do
Hi very nice video !!! I thank to anyone that can help me
I'd go for the forerunner 245. There are a few videos on the channel about it
Any chance you could comment on how the cardio or yoga activities capture stats/info? Looking for something that will capture HIIT and workouts.
Hello Mr Coffeeguy, I use the HIIT very occasionally, although I use it to record my workouts I wouldnt like to comment on the level of accuracy sorry
Thks for the review!
Thanks Laryssa 😎
I am a biathlete and I was wondering if you can use one of them or both for cross country skiing?
Hey Lynn, no skiing option I'm afraid
Do you think wearing one on each wrist would’ve been a fairer test? Wearing the 45 over your wrist bone could have given a less accurate reading.
For sure, great points. It's more about trying to film with my left hand bring impossible as I'm so right have dominant
You seem like a lovely bloke.
Subscribed brother!!!
Thanks mate 👍😎
Whats night running like on both? Are they easy to read in the dark?
Both have optional back lights
I would guess at yes. But not 100% sorry
I enjoy seeing how many flights of stairs I have climbed, as well as my elevation gain/loss during my runs. Are the two of these capable of giving me that information? Thanks for the video, I'm currently in limbo between the two.
Hello, I want to buy a garmin watch.. I'm a basic runner for the moment..doubt is
Fr 45
Or
Fr735xt
Layout Fr45 is very bad..no name for time, lap ecc..
Help please..
I know what you mean. Maybe You'll get used to the times, Put them in the order of importance to you maybe? There are some cracking deals on 735 too. The OS will be quicker on the 45. My choice is 45 if that helps
hi shane Thanks for the video! I would like to know
running zone Heart rate data Which is correct? 45 or 235
45 mate
nice review. Do u think FR325 still worth it in 2020? 🙏🏻
What price have you seen it for? 235?
@@shanebow i mean 235. Sorry wrong typo 😰. Is it still worth to buy? Im about to hv my first sportwatch.
Still considering for FR235, FR45 and Venu SQ (non music) btw..
How much was the 235 deal? It's a cracking first watch. The data screens are brilliant!
@@shanebow around USD230 in my country. Same price with FR45 & Venu SQ as well. That's what makes me confused..😅😂😁
The 245 is quicker at responding to heart rate changes but they were about the same
Hey I’m stuck between these two watches, I weight train a lot, as well as cycle, hike, run aswell as sports which is the better watch to get ?
Do you use the connect iq store app to download these widgets and device apps?
Hey Kevin, yes, hopefully this will help... ruclips.net/video/aYF3GBcyXQg/видео.html
Hi... The 45 that's on the video is it the large or small version?
large
Hey I know im late but do you know how far the garmin 45 can be away from your phone? Great review btw
Through a wall and a bit. When I was upstairs and phone downstairs could still get connection
@@shanebow so u basically can’t go running anywhere without ur phone right?
The watch has the GPS chipset built in. So you can leave your phone at home when you run. The watch connects to the satellites and then saves all the information. When you get home it'll connect to your phone automatically then sync all the data. It works well. Does that answer your question ok? 👍
@@shanebow ohhh that makes sense ok thanks sorry I was just a bit confused
so it will connect to the garmin app and/or strava once you come near ur phone to sync it right?
sorry im asking so many questions just want to make sure i know all i can before getting it haha thanks
Would you ever do a comparison of the FR245 and the Instinct?
Hey Ben! Thanks for the question. Not right now but it's something for the future for sure. Be great to take them both out and look at the maps and GPS accuracy
Does the 45 also monitor heart rate 24/7?
Sure does
very good thanks!
Cheers Alex 👍😎
Is this the 45 or 245
45 vs 235
You can get the 235 for £99. Go for it?
Too right! That's like theft at that price! I'm calling the police 😎 have a great run with it!!
@@shanebow thanks mate! Great review. Have a good one
Does the watches have a sleep widget, or can you see information about the slepp only in the app?
Hey Jannis, can be viewed on the app only
@@shanebow Thank you for the answer! That's a pity, but I will nevertheless order the watch. Does none of the Garmin watches have a sleep widget?
What were you hoping to see on the widget?
@@shanebow I know that other Sport-/Smartwatches support this, like the Honor Watch Magic, the Galaxy Smartwatches, Xiaomi's and so on. If you wake up you can immediately see how your sleep was. Especially for people with a sleep disorder this is important to know.
Isit because wer you had it on your arm to do with heart rate
Which should I buy 45 or 235?...my weekly running mileage is around 80kms...please advice Shane. I want a reliable budget watch. Thank you
Hey Aditya 😎 it's a really tough question and you do a lot of miles.
@@amritarao9635 Go for 235 or 245(if you can spend some more)...
@@adityasharma9030 sure, Thanks. 😊
You're the best
Thanks a million!!! 😎👍👍👍🏃🏃
Can you controll music from the 45 on your phone?
Yes you can 😎
@@shanebow Cheers mate
1:45 - you surely meant mm , not cm :)))
Haha! Yeah well noticed
@@shanebow Thanks for the review! Just bought 45, I think its all I need as a runner beginner. Stay safe folks!

Sorry. I can't read the message ☹️
Shanebow - Running & Tech Which one do you think it is?
235
Shanebow - Running & Tech Thank you
😊
Wich better to swimming of both?
I'd go with the 245 as that has swim tracking when neither of these do 😎
@@shanebow i do not swimming continuity.. so i asked for interest because between 235 and 45 i m closed to 45. What do you think?
For everyday use to work , gym and 4 days to week running.
None of them track swimming my friend. There is an app you can put on the 235 but it's not made by garmin and has mixed reviews. So as you seem to be looking for a choice between those two I will say go with the 235. It has extra screens you can add and extra data screens when running which I find really helpful
@@shanebow thanks for your ideas!!
