Mike was not exaggerating about that braised pork with rice, that dish is no joke! Super easy to make too if you guys wanna try it: Just fry the meat with obscene amount of shallots (can substitute with regular onions), ginger, soy sauce, sugar, white pepper and Chinese 5 spice powder. Add some water to allow the meat to cook longer in order to get more tender (about 30 minutes), and voila! You got yourself a plate of genuine Taiwanese Braised Pork dish!
It’s really difficult if not impossible to find minced pork as fatty as that in some countries though ie; the UK. Even the pork belly here seem so lean.
I used to live across the street from the memorial when I was a student. Loved my time there. The Taiwanese are so friendly. The Taiwanese pork belly is the best!!!!
I like how the calendar in the background is on September. Your videos always make me hungry and want to travel. Great video and keep up the great job.
well i can understand why people get sick by looking at all the fat on the plates but unlike most fatty meat in America, Asian cuisine cooks the fat very well with seasoning and marination which won't make you get sick of it.
I usually don't comment on youtube videos. But I love to watch you. You show such raw emotions, it's awesome. Your face you made when you ate the brain soup, PRICELESS! Keep up the good work!
This place is indeed incredible. Here for breakfast for the same reason. Still dreaming about it. Ate so much, I had to skip lunch. They know ABC's so much, she offered me a spoon, i said no, she waited and watched me fumble the chopsticks then sheepishly said yes.
I think fat adds so much flavor to a dish. It is too bad that Americans are always cutting out the fat. You can see in this cooking how delicious and nutritious it is. When I make a gravy from drippings I never take out the fat.
I just came back from Taiwan. The food was excellent. We stayed at Airbnb for 6 days paid $328 US. 3 Blocks from Taipei main station. You have to try the food court at the basement in Taipei 101. Food at the old town's (many) were great. Great video Mikey.
It's beyond me why you don't have you're own Food network TV show. These videos are so much better than half the shows on there. I'd subscribe just to watch you eat :). I love how much you love food.
I studied at a university next to this place. I had this braised pork rice every week. I am now in Houston and miss this so much. If you go next time, you should go to the noodle place in the alley 2 mins away from 金峰. They have hot oil. And most of the noodles are spicy. You will love it.
I got emotional when you took a bite of the braised pork and rice as well. such memories! I have made it before with the tea eggs but it's missing the ambiance of the Taiwan smells and sounds.
Hi Mike, about 2 months now i have been following your channel and i love it!!! question: i hear the word "braised" alot and i am not completely sure what that mean. would you kindly explain what is braised and how is food prepared when braised. thank you 😊
I'm watching your videos everyday and as a cooking maniac myself, and Asian living in America, I'm trying to recreate a lot of flavors you're showing. A lots of peppers, herbs, noodles, pork and sesame oil! Thanks. It's awesome.
My one regret when I visited Taiwan last year was that I did not get any braised pork over rice. Definitely gonna hit that up next time! Taiwan has some freaking incredible food.
Mike, is the calendar on your back showing the right month? Or you are a time traveler?? Hahaha... Food in Taiwan looks awesome! Made me want to go there and try all the food you ate. Love your show!
The braised pork belly is soooooo delicious, best braised pork I have tried so far. If you got a chance definitely should give it a try. Vegetable is kind of oily though
He doesn't know what he's missing! Brain is delicious. I can recommend it the Austrian way (poached and then deep fried in breadcrumbs, with Sauce Tartare), also Hyderabad- or Bhopal-style brain curry.
I am not asian, but PuertoRican. My mother made the most awesome calf brain fritters ever. They are soft inside but they are fried in batter and just the perfect combination of a bit crunchy but creamy inside.
For those of us who don't know more than a few words in chinese pictures in menus are lifesavers. With the picture and your finger you can say 这个 zhège (this one) as many times as you want and eat.
I'm going to Taipei soon, and I'm pretty much watching all your videos to know good places to eat. Do you have any recommendations on places I definitely should visit? Which was your favourite Night Market?
That looks delicious. I'm gonna have to try it when I go back. Try giving this place a shot. QIN JIA BING DIAN 秦家餅店 Chive Pockets!!!!! No. 12, Lane 6, Siwei Rd. It's a little old lady that makes these breaded pockets with chive and another filling. All of it home made. I thought they were good.
The braised pork dish with rice you ate is called 滷肉飯 lu rou fan (lil-row-fan) and it is a staple comfort food. The sauce as well as the meat are what make it sooooooo good. I'm jealous.
I am going to Taiwan this year with my family and would definitely try this. Watching the video and seeing the facial expression makes me want to eat it now. omnomnomnom ^^
your video far char siu and crispy roasted pork got me to wah fung. you should start interacting w/ cooks and or staffed. would've loved knowing how long the pork braises for
This looks amazing. I do like having larger pieces of the pork belly rather than small strips of it. I also really love roasted pork belly a bit more than braised pork belly because I love the sides being crispy. It does taste a bit greasier/oilier when roasted though. God, I want to know how many calories this is though. I love fried/roast/braised pork belly too much for my own good :(
Anyone know the trick for getting the stewed egg to penetrate into the yolk. I have cooked mine for an hour after peeling, continued to marinate 2 days in the refrig, still only a thin outer layer is dark.
you have to try brain & scrambled eggs once you get back to the states, one of my neighbors use to make it and I thought that they were crazy but then I tried it that way and they were good, I do to like to watch you eat and wish some day I can go and enjoy what your tasting, yummy.
Here in Sardinia we cook the brain boiled in a light broth. But we eat it without the broth, only with extravergin olive oil , salt and a little bit of lemon juice. :-)
It looks very scary! Look the video "Brain Washing" on my channel. The taste for me is good, very creamy and mild, but I know this recipe since i was a child. Here it is normal to eat the brain, liver, heart, kidneys and many other internal parts. Scary cook.. eh eh eh
I love this fermented cheese but I can say that few peoples loves it in Sardinia. So, not everyone but few lovers. The taste is very strong, you can smell the aroma meters away and in the original ancient recipes there are live worms on it. Now is illegal to sell casu marzu with worms. Similar to casu marzu is "su callu" produced by the fermentation of the milk in the stomach of a very young lamb. :-)
Just from watching this channel, and some of his other videos, I think he would prefer the Sichuan way of cooking brains, either in hotpot or with that amazing chilli oil and Sichuan peppercorn sauce. over any European or Taiwanese preparation
wow interesting. my family (from nagaland, india) mixes cooked pig brain with chili, garlic, cilantro and fermented fish . kinda like a fishy guacamole Lol! we eat it as a condoment with rice and curry. Not a big fan of it just cause I know its brain
How do you eat that much? For a breakfast too. I didn't know that place opens that early because it's a bit unusual to eat those things in the morning even for people in Taiwan.
Mike hey u being a hot pot enthusiast, have u not tried the Taiwan individual flavor hot pot yet? I truly believe u will enjoy those then most other hot pot style out there, and I'm not talking about Taiwan style Japanese shabu
I love eating the braised pork with eggs, I make it at home a lot... I wonder if it's the same.. My people call it sweet pork with eggs if you translate it to english
Mike was not exaggerating about that braised pork with rice, that dish is no joke! Super easy to make too if you guys wanna try it:

Don't forget the rice wine!
Nice!
Hank Chen thank you! It sounds so easy and accessible
For this information, you have been voted my favorite person this week 💖
Thank you :3
It’s really difficult if not impossible to find minced pork as fatty as that in some countries though ie; the UK. Even the pork belly here seem so lean.
I had everything you had in Taipei and I have to say, spot on reviews man.
I used to live across the street from the memorial when I was a student. Loved my time there. The Taiwanese are so friendly. The Taiwanese pork belly is the best!!!!

My new goal is to be as excited about my food as you were about that rice dish. 😂
My goal is actually to be less excited about food. I'm getting fatter day by day.
+squad goals101 omg same. My husband doesnt get excittes about food like I do so that helps
This isn't nothing but overreact. Not excitement, to be honest.
lucas jose It's excitement not overreacting. You clearly haven't had a food that makes you really really happy.
Kitty Watch mark weins he does that to everything he eats even an apple!! Edit better add that he’s awesome too, also the food ranger.

Seeing your reaction at 5:30. Totally thought it was just me that nearly burst into tears when eating something amazing!
This place is indeed incredible. Here for breakfast for the same reason. Still dreaming about it. Ate so much, I had to skip lunch. They know ABC's so much, she offered me a spoon, i said no, she waited and watched me fumble the chopsticks then sheepishly said yes.
Yo, I'm like a 10 min bike ride from there. I'm def gonna try it when I'm back there in Jan. Love your vids man. Keep up the good work.

mainly refined carbs and preservatives cause a lot of issues. over-processed vegetable fats aren’t healthy also
@@leafster1337 and they over process all of them now.

Lu Rou Fan (Braised Pork Rice) so humble and tasty, along with Beef Noodle Soup are probably the two national dishes of Taiwan.
This is hands down the first place i visit when i visit taiwan again . Best video you ever made. please can someone link me the google map link ?
My one regret when I visited Taiwan last year was that I did not get any braised pork over rice. Definitely gonna hit that up next time! Taiwan has some freaking incredible food.

Mike Chen hates subway sandwhiches lol every time he's looking for a benchmark for bad food, he mentions them lol
I'm going to Taipei soon, and I'm pretty much watching all your videos to know good places to eat. Do you have any recommendations on places I definitely should visit? Which was your favourite Night Market?
shikavstem When you arrive Taipei, you could ask local people where is a night market not for tourists. Maybe you could find better one.
I love watching you eat delicious food and wish to eat them but can't.

Chive Pockets!!!!!
No. 12, Lane 6, Siwei Rd.
It's a little old lady that makes these breaded pockets with chive and another filling. All of it home made. I thought they were good.
Definitely my favourite Taiwan dish.....and one of my favourite asian dishes all time
my family always cooked brains with scrambled eggs
Cholesterol on top of cholesterol. 😵
Explains why ur username is cave lion XD
Heard about a girl raised on a cattle farm who, once on her own, couldn't figure out why her eggs weren't as creamy as Mom's. I'd try it.
Cave Lion We just breadcrumb then fry so good with sriracha lol
I didn't know lion eat brains
The braised pork dish with rice you ate is called 滷肉飯 lu rou fan (lil-row-fan) and it is a staple comfort food. The sauce as well as the meat are what make it sooooooo good. I'm jealous.
I've never enjoyed watching a person eat before, I can't stop watching him though! He must exercise for hours a day! He's ripped!
I hate your videos because of jealousy, but love them because it just all looks so good.💟
"Get outta this world! Get outta this world!" lol 😆

I'll go to the store and try the Braised Pork with Rice. In fact, the fat is almost gone after braising. It's really tasty.
Hey Mike, where can I get the music @ :36? It's so relaxing....thanks!
Love this shop which is so close to the hotel that we stayed when we were there, it was super delicious and super cheap.
One day I hope to actually have a life, until then, I will live through Mike.
I am going to Taiwan this year with my family and would definitely try this. Watching the video and seeing the facial expression makes me want to eat it now. omnomnomnom ^^
I agreed with you Sir, Taiwan Minced pork and the Braiced pork belly is so tender, the best combination with rice...
Yummy❤❤❤
My top 5 favorite dish, pork belly braised in sweet soy sauce. If only this dish was super healthy....but life doesn't work that way.
Yum, that all looked so good... Minus the brain soup. Don't think I could bring myself to try that 🙂
I'll be in L.A. this week, any stand out joints I should try?
