Good farming lesson for this old man that grew up 90 miles from Laura’s Farm…in Dodge, NE & Morse Bluff, NE. I often wondered why all the teenagers were hired by the famers in the area to de-tassel the corn. I think I just found out why. The males have outlived their usefulness…huh, huh. Laura congratulations on finishing your degree. It should help you & your family in keeping the farm going for generations to come. You have to be the prettiest Nebraska farmer I have seen in my 73 years on earth. 👏

Laura, thank you for your content. For interest in farming it is really high quality. I live in Western Australia. I live in Perth, the state capital, but I spent my early working life on farms here from the age of 16.(I'm talking mid 1970's). We prepared the ground by scarifying, and then sowed with an International seeding drill, towed behind a Ford 9000 tractor (90hp) which was considered a pretty hot rig at the time. Go figure. I'm still seeing farming friends and helping them fix stuff all the time (I'm an electrical technician, so they use me up lots).
We grow mainly wheat, barley, oats, canola, some beans (very few) and lupins. Barley and Lupins are kept on farm mainly for stock feed, as here we keep a lot of sheep, for wool and meat, and we need to feed them through a long dry summer, for 5-6 months.
Been really interested watching how you guys do things in Nebraska. Not sure how I'd cope with blowing snow off the truck in the morning and working in a t shirt in the afternoon. I've also been fascinated by the way you guys do stuff. I have some questions.
    1) Why do you need to chop up the male corn plants? Do they cause problems once pollination is finished?
    2) I noticed that while you were chopping out the males, you were planting turnips in the same rows. Is this so your cattle can eat them later?
    3) When you harvest corn with the header, does the header spit the cob out as trash? What happens to all the corn trash? There must be lots of it.
    4) Pivots look like lots of trouble to me. Although I used to make a bit of a living building diesel engine control systems for the pivots we use here. Do you need them cause you have long dry periods?
Sorry to attempt a novel here, but I'm interested. Cheers. Mike.

When I was working up in northern Indiana a couple of years ago I got to watch some of the detassiling going on in production seed corn. They still brought in workers to walk the fields to make sure I'm assuming. The small town was Remington, IN. Seed corn business was Remington Seeds. Pretty interesting operation. Was there long enough to see the harvesting and the special harvesting machinery. No seed is grown much around here in east central Indiana.

Laura, never stop growing yourself. Never stop learning is the best advice I can give to anyone. I try to learn something new every day. It doesn't have to be a life altering epiphany, it could just be finding out where a road I've never gone down before takes me, or a new use for a tool, or even watching one of your videos and learning about crop farming. I'm a milk hauler and firefighter so there's always an opportunity to learn something. Your videos have taught me so much that I never knew about crop farming, I've been binge watching all your videos.

Laura, as many of us who have been around for awhile can acknowledge, Every Day Provides Opportunity For Learning! It's what you do with those opportunities that determines how successful you are. I see you learning and using what you learn in every video. I was amazed at your ability in the video to "concentrate" on your chopping out the males yet communicate with us so effectively! Absolutely fantastic!
It's so fantastic to be following your journey and, yes, learning things I didn't know until I discovered it on your channel. Having that desire-to-learn attitude you demonstrate will help keep every day fresh. I sense you have an attitude of, "I wonder what things new I'll learn today!" Never lose that quest for learning and improving, Laura. It will take you places in the future not yet imagined.
And, finally, Congratulations on such a great achievement of completing your "formal training"!!!
    Dave

Laura named/described that feeling that one gets whenever they accomplish something constructive and it looks good, etc. by calling it "satisfying". I never thought about describing things that I have built, done or fixed as that, but it sure fits! She was troweling and smoothing concrete the other day and said that it was satisfying and it is to look at. Her kid brother was vacuuming out unused seed from a planter, said the same. Laura was scraping gasket material from a V8 engine intake manifold off of a pivot, said it was satisfying. Now I will always think of Laura saying this as I accomplish such tasks from now on! Laura has helped me to be more able to think positively. Now when I go out and mow my lawn here in a few minutes and it looks like a beautiful green brush afterwards, I will think to myself how satisfying that it is! THANKS LAURA! :-)

Lots of people have commented how great it is to see a young person working hard and staying dedicated to their work/farm. Don't think Laura is the exception. Most kids are the same we just see all the negative crap all the time. Also, Laura shows how a woman can do the same work her counter-part can, she's smart and a pleasure to learn from her.
