  • 🗳️🇬🇧🇺🇸 #Elections #Politics #Faith 🤔📚🔍 With crucial elections happening in the UK and USA this year, Unbelievable is diving back into the debate on politics and faith with some paradigm-shifting thinkers and theologians. Strap in for this mini-series starting with Michael F. Bird (Deputy Principal & New Testament scholar at Ridley College, Australia) and Stephen Wolfe (author of ‘The Case for Christian Nationalism’). These two come to vastly different conclusions about how faith and politics should mix.
Stephen Wolfe makes a startling case for Christian nationalism. How can followers of Jesus be part of the solution bringing divided communities together, asks Michael Bird, co-author with Tom “NT” Wright of ‘Jesus and the Powers?’ What are the boundaries of our personal beliefs? How can we achieve the goods we wish to see in society? In the coming weeks, we will also hear from New Testament scholar Tom ‘NT’ Wright, Preston Sprinkle author of ‘Exiles: The church in the shadow of empire,’ and ex-White House and presidential staffer Michael Wear. 📖✝️🏛️

I thought this was a good conversation.
I find that many, including myself, are quick to write off Stephen Wolfe's perspective as a necessarily racist ideology, but if you really listen, I don't actually think that is what he is saying. Glad to listen to Bird push on these issues, but then also get pushed on a seemingly thin conception on why liberal democracy is considered by many to be almost a foundation of Christian orthodoxy.
The conception that liberal democracy in a culture which places individual autonomy and expression as the highest ideal will fail spectacularly. If I am hearing Wolfe correctly, he is stating that a nation will always/must center its ethos and political telos on what is deemed the ultimate good. Wolfe is arguing that placing Christian ideals as the ultimate good of a nation will create a healthier and more thriving nation than expressive individualism. Seems like a very reasonable argument to make.
    Did I get that right?

There is a glaring reason for the contention around Wolfe's ideas of ethnicity. His description of "clusters of ethnic groups" formed by "self-sorting" around "cultural preferences" is utterly disingenuous against the backdrop of U.S. history. The notorious sorting of a minority group by a dominant group- not around "cultural preferences", but on the pretense of supremacy- is such an obvious snag in his theory, and that it was done under the banner of Christianity makes it all the more damning.

I agree this is especially problematic around the issues of race in America, and to some degree in the Anglosphere generally. Not having read Wolfe's book myself, it seems to me from this conversation that Wolfe is (as he pointed out a few different times) trying for the most part to establish a ground for Christian Nationalism. Rather than outlining his plan to re-christianize America, he's describing how Christianity and political power interact in the abstract. This has been a question for Constantine, Alfred, and Luther, as well as Jefferson and (Catholic?) Biden.
Let me throw out a second controversy and see if it makes things clearer or muddier! The Bible nowhere explicitly bans polygamy or divorce. Jesus makes it clear that these things are bad, appealing to the creation design as God's plan for marriage, there are restrictions on an elder being the husband of one wife, the analogy between marriage and Christ and the church, all these things work against polygamy and divorce. If anyone in my church tried to marry a second wife on the basis that it was not forbidden in the Bible, I would rebuke it as sin. But when missionaries to the Congo demanded that converts choose their favourite wife and divorce all others it caused many poor widows to be left destitute.
In this messy world of hard hearts, sometimes even a faithful Christian is forced to a lesser of two evils. I don't yet know if I agree with Wolfe that some of the things he describes are 'permissible', but for the sake of honest debate I feel I need to point out two things:
      1. He hasn't (in this debate at least) said that ethnic sorting is good, or a desirable end goal,
      2. He hasn't (in this debate at least) said that ethnic sorting should happen in present-day America.
It's important to argue the points that Wolfe is actually making, not jump to how his argument might be used or abused.
One more thing: Considered in the light of Catalan autonomy (from Spain), or even the Scottish Independence movement, ideas of partition remain very concerning, but they are not abhorrent as they are if you have American Black, White, Latin, and Asian populations in mind.

    • @Wren_Farthing
      @Wren_Farthing 2 месяца назад

@@quinnmcleish5278 Points taken. I suspect most of the commenters here have read Wolfe’s book and/or have followed the controversy surrounding it for some time, and that there is less extrapolation going on than it would seem. Wolfe likes to remind people his book is political philosophy, but much of what he writes is more idiosyncratic than theoretical, and, though he denies it in conversation, a reasonable reader would intuit that he’s writing with the U.S. in mind. But, don’t take my word for it. Read the book, or save some time and money and read some reviews. The salient points are easy to track down, as are the concerns and Wolfe’s answers to them. If you have a notion of Christian Nationalism that you think is workable, maybe you will come away with a different take, but I pray that you do not see a path in what he is proposing.

I find that most who do that ignore half of what Stephen’s said, or haven’t read his book. Because this was direct engagement and a coherent conversation, I think Michael actually pointed out some legitimate concerns with some of Stephen’s ideas. I would love to see much more of this and much less of Christian parachurch organizations warning everyone about how much of a threat Christian nationalism is.

There are two major flaws in Dr. Michael F. Bird’s thinking in this discussion of politics. The 1st being that he is under the impression that there is neutrality between the believer and the nonbeliever. Neutrality is a myth that has made the Evangelical Christian comatose while the secularist are jousting for power to assert their will based on their religious paradigm. If there isn’t such a thing of neutrality in the Spiritual realm, why do people think neutrality exists in the physical? Does not the spiritual influence the physical which includes politics and culture? The Apostle Paul warns the Christian in Ephesians 6:12, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” So if this is the case, why does the Christian fail to recognize the nonbelievers worldview will always make an attempt to encroach on a Christianized culture. Dr. Michael Bird has demonstrated this by hoping in democracy prevailing in the “neutral” public square, and not realizing that politics is in fact battles and wars being waged. He stated that 80% of Fiji is Christian due to democracy and democracy should be good enough without necessitating any further measures to enshrine Christianity in their government. Nevertheless, surely he would not want to live in a country consisting of Satanist which may have 80% legislative power and/or voting power. Which brings me to addressing the second flaw that Dr. Michael Bird has in this discussion and that being his belief that the nonbeliever is innately good. The harsh reality is that no one is good not even one; and the nonbeliever does not fear the Christian God. Thus, they will formulate decisions based on the lack of their fear in God. So why even trust in democracy that is not rooted in Christian tenets? I would suggest that not only should Christians rule governments but they should make every attempt to enshrine Christian theology in their governing documents. For example, I think the Apostles Creed should be in the United States Preamble of the Constitution. This is would create Christian safeguards within Christian culture ruled by Christian governance. Dr. Michael Bird’s safeguarding suggestion of grassroots evangelism is also necessary. Both must be applied because my belief is that when Christians rule, both the believer and nonbeliever will thrive. If you entrust your political hopes on false pretenses such as the political “neutral” grounds, you will be battling things like abortion for multiple generations which has resulted in the murder of hundreds of millions of innocent life. Christians must wield power to the glory of God.

So at 1:03:00, Dr. Wolfe argues that without a base Protestant tradition encoded into law, one simply descends into "moral anarchy." I'm not sure how that doesn't relegate non-Protestants -- as well as Protestants who don't share his vision -- to second class citizens. I'm not part of the Christian community at all, so I'm at a loss to understand his reasoning why I should be subject to the imposed Protestant traditions he proposes. Can't you just live your life the way you wish within your insular community and leave the rest of us to live our lives as we best see fit?

@@MeanBeanComedy Yes, I was poking fun at the USA.
As for Catholic, the word means universal. To combine it with a city is ridiculous & historically stems from Rome's extreme arrogance, to imagine that it was the 'Church founded by Christ'. History & Scripture display to us that the Church was made up of individual congregations of Christians, each self governing by a group of elders. Quite early on, some churches replaced that group with a single, monarchical 'bishop' & this spread eventually to Rome. Rome, being the capital city, the bishop of that congregation felt they had some authority over other churches, leading to Victor, Rome's pope, threatening to excommunicate those who disagreed with him over the date of Easter. He was reprimanded even by those on his side & ignored by those who disagreed. Thus the claim of Rome to be the Church founded by Christ has been rejected by most Christians since the beginning.

What kind of political equality is it if a "higher" power can restrict and remove a group's power! This is a foolish argument. And frankly, Stephen has this ideal vision of family ties. If you had an ancestor in a national war, there is this family feeling? A lot of young people today aren't big on the warring for anything, let alone warring to create a familial relationship.

Stephen has said publicly that Christian Nationalism would require that women no longer hold positions of authority such as judges, politicians, or police. The society he envisions would imprison and or execute atheists or people accused of blasphemy. He says women are too sensitive and empathetic to carry out these directives. Sound like the loving humble service-led movement of Jesus? I don’t see it. Read David Prior’s book “Jesus and Power”, it’s nothing short of prophetic.

Remember, Wolfe's project is political theory. As such, he's describing things that are permissible, but not always prudent. In your comment, would you say it's *always sinful* for women to not be allowed to hold positions of authority such as judges, politicians, or law enforcement? Or would you agree that in some situations, it's permissible for women to not be allowed to hold these positions of authority? I'm just curious how extreme or dogmatic your view is compared to the flexible theory that Wolfe puts forward.
I'm also not sure where Wolfe says that atheists and accused blasphemers *must* be imprisoned or executed, which is what you said by using the word "would." As a reminder, Wolfe is speaking in terms of permissibility, not prescription. Could you envision any situations where atheists as atheists could rightly be imprisoned or executed? Or where actual blasphemers (not simply *accused* blasphemers) could be imprisoned or executed? Is there any common good that *could* be served there, or is that sort of action everywhere and always sinful?
Final questions: Have you read the Old Testament? If so, would you say that God sinned?
I think you need to understand that political theory provides options that could be implemented or not, since theory is principle-based. The resulting question is how is one to apply the principles in his particular context. But the principles themselves must be understood first. That's what Wolfe is doing.

I believe God’s Word (Jesus) is infallible and inerrant. I don’t believe the diverse library of scripture written by people seeking to understand God is. I believe that if you picture Jesus as a warrior God who would delight in bashing infants heads against the rocks, or instructing soldiers to enslave and keep virgins from other tribes, then it is not the Christianity of Jesus you seek to emulate, but the Christianity of Constantine, and Rome. I believe that Jesus is God in the flesh, and there is no other vengeful God hiding behind Him. He said “If you’ve seen me, you’ve seen the Father”. In a nutshell yes I believe executing blasphemers and atheists in any society is morally wrong and sinful. I also believe that keeping women from serving in any job they wish to serve is wrong too. Is there anywhere in the gospels where Jesus calls on his followers to kill or commit violence in his name, or in his defense? “What I relate is the history of the next two centuries. I describe what is coming, what can no longer come differently: the advent of nihilism!
Nihilism stands at the door: whence comes this uncanniest of all guests?
    1. Point of departure: it is an error to consider 'social distress' or 'physiological degeneration' or, worse, corruption, as the cause of nihilism. Ours is the most decent and compassionate age. Distress, whether of the soul, body, or intellect, cannot of itself give birth to nihilism (i.e., the radical repudiation of value, meaning, and desirability). Such distress always permits a variety of interpretations. Rather: it is in one particular interpretation, the Christian-moral one, that nihilism is rooted.
    2. The end of Christianity-at the hands of its own morality (which cannot be replaced), which turns against the Christian God (the sense of truthfulness, developed highly by Christianity, is nauseated by the falseness and mendaciousness of all Christian interpretations of the world and of history; rebound from 'God is truth' to the fanatical faith 'All is false'; a Buddhism of inaction).
    3. Skepticism regarding morality is what is decisive. The end of the moral interpretation of the world, which no longer has any sanction after it has tried to escape into some beyond, leads to nihilism. 'Everything lacks meaning' (the untenability of one interpretation of the world, upon which a tremendous amount of energy has been lavished, awakens the suspicion that all interpretations of the world are false). Buddhistic tendency, a kind of yearning for Nothing. (Indian Buddhism is not the culmination of a thoroughly moralistic development; its nihilism is therefore full of morality that is not overcome: existence as punishment, existence construed as error, error thus as a punishment- is a moral valuation.)
    4. Philosophical attempts to overcome the 'moral God' (Hegel, pantheism).
Overcoming popular ideals: the sage; the saint; the poet.
The antagonism of 'true' and 'beautiful' and 'good'."

I should add that I am British and will not take on American citizenship because of the commonality of such views (and, before someone tells me to leave the country, I put far, far more money into the American economy than I take out - and all without representation). Otherwise Mr Bird is very impressive in this discussion which all participants carry out very respectfully - an excellent model for any discussion.

You've a point there - the thing about which I am most concerned is the risk that some in the Church might seek to secure by force (law, control) those changes they might like to see in our society that they cannot secure by persuasion and through *leading by righteous and compassionate example in their own lives*.
We would all agree that some things are outright criminal (eg physical spousal abuse, child porography, etc) but some things aren't inherently criminal (although some Christians might think so, such as homosexuality).
I am a Christian, have been for longer than most other Christians have been alive, and I am deeply concerned by the attitudes and behaviors of some of my brothers and sisters who pretty obviously are not walking close to Christ (they don't resemble His conduct and don't seem to take His teachings seriously - where are the fruits?), yet carry themselves as if possessed of grace, Insight and authority denied to others.
It shames me to say so, but some of them have behaved towards others worse than you might expect of those "in the world." And some of them are fully into "Christian Nationalism," devoted to politics to the point they seem to subvert Christ to it. I am deeply concerned, and frankly, how would we keep such people out of power except by publicly holding them to account, running better candidates from among ourselves, and refusing to vote for them? Some of those people have been the most hateful, or prideful, or even disinterested in education I have met. I've tried love, compassion, sweet reason, and other non-confrontational approaches, but none have been effective.
Something is heart-breakingly wrong in the Church - so no, I don't trust "Christian Nationalism" because I don't trust the outsize influence that broken Christians in that mix exert among those who aren't. Christian Nationalism as is at high risk to morph into theocracy led by really scary Christians, and that is the last thing I think we need right now.

Yet they and their fellow immigrants all worked and contributed to making a great nation. My bi-racial children are fully American. People from disparate nations and cultures can assimilate and make a great nation.

You assimilated like he said. That being said, the overwhelming majority of us have a common ancestry. If we were all just a grab-bag of different groups, the Nation would collapse. There's a reason why ethnic fractionalisation is correlated with everything bad in a Nation. Just look at Somalia

You need to understand the difference between the spheres of the Church, family, and State. God has instituted all 3 of these institutions and Christ has been given authority over all these institutions.
The only legitimate church is one that obeys Christ just as the only legitimate state is one that obeys Christ.
