Three Pillars of Argumentation
Argumentation is a common daily activity whose frequency belies its complexity. While there are many ways to approach the ways in which we handle disagreements, decisions, problem-solving and such like, I want to present three essential components that form the core of my theory of argumentation. These are context, audience and ethos. The approach I take is situated in the rhetorical school which understand the essentially social nature of our discussions centred on disagreement. Each of these three concepts takes us from a wider focus into a narrower one. Context can refer to anything from the culture and language in which we find ourselves to the immediate physical location. Audience refers to the particular person or persons with who we are interacting. Ethos has to do with the beliefs and feelings we have about our argument partner, as well as our concern for self-image. The talk will show how these three interact and can provide useful direction in an argument.
Unfortunately, this proffessor's ethos went down the drain when he degraded Autistics.
Very informative and eye-opening. Thanks a lot.
Tomorrow I’ll have a text, I hope I be good, thanks 🙏
