Other pro-tip, if you’re going to use Deploy, use Fey Illumination beforehand. It’ll boost the shield from Adlo for a bigger shield when you deploy and also reduces the AoE damage that comes in making your shield even MORE effective! Love it as always! Great stuff!
I beg to differ on Succor, I use it all the time when people get aoe dmg, and just to keep shields up on all. It does drain MP much faster though you have to keep mind of that and use your MP regen skill if you need a lot of them, but it isnt bad, especially if you dont have deployment tactics yet. Plus it is good for an oh crap moment if you are in damage rotations and need to heal while you select your tank again. Other than that though, great vid. Returning recently, it is nice to see I didn't have everything wrong just winging it.
Just got arcanist to 30 and decided I wanted to play scholar more then summoner but was nervous about being a healer in a team. This guide helped alleviate a lot of that potential stress with your explanation of how to play the class. Thank you!
Expedient really helps during the Thal's bloody Balls mechanic in the Nald'Thal fight. Added movement during that mechanic really helps your party survive especially when you have newbies along.
I think this will actually be helpful for me. Despite getting it to level 80 last expansion, I'm not at all an efficient Scholar and I believe this breakdown of the abilities will help me out. I would argue that Emergency Tactics does have its place, like Planery Indulgence. It's those times in a fight (though not often in regular dungeons, more EX trials and Raids) where you will need to top people off quickly. As someone who has had to Solo heal through Thunder God... the pain is real. All of that aside, when the job trailer came out, I told people "That may appear at a glance to be the dumbest thing, but it is an AOE sprint. It is going to be hella useful in Raids/EX fights". It's hella useful in raids/EX fights... and when the Bard forgets to Peleton between trash mobs.
Scholar is probably the healing class I have the most trouble with, so I appreciate any resource that can help me get a better handle on how it works. Thanks!
Yo this was an amazing video! I like how you went over all the skills and gave examples of their practical usage. It made me realize i have been making some mistakes when playing this job. Hope you do the same for the other jobs too.
Not gonna lie, I never did 'place' the faerie. and I didn't even notice I could LOL!!! But I never had an issue as I was always "up in the shiz lol". The use of dissipation is nice, I wasn't doing it that way :D The emergency tactics, I had the same feeling lol!!! But I LOVE that you pointed out the use of Deployment tactics! I see a lot of sprouts not using this, and I hope they see this video! I still prefer SGE over SCH for barrier healing, but I felt this was extremely helpful, even to me, to take away some of my SCH hate :D
Emergency tactics has some uses like if there' a mechanic where everyone HAS To be at 100% health (like doom or something) then it's useful to have it. You know... in an emergency.
Thank you. I'm a shield healer since noct ast was a thing. SGE became my main fave in raid but I've always eyed sch, just felt overwhelmed and confused by it's kit. Gunna go try it out now, the dungeon pull was a huge help. =]

Fun fact but fey illumination adds to more healing with that extra shield. If there's a heal check or dps refusing to use their heads I'll pop them off together for bigger heals in lower level dungeons

So I recently just picked up SCH and I was having a bit of a hard time with since my main has been AST since EW release but this guide has made it a lot more simple for me to play SCH and I've been enjoying it a lot more so thank you for putting this guide out
New player here. Still going through the story. My main is a white mage, but I started out leveling the MSQ. So I’m leveling a scholar/summoner so I don’t waste MSQ experience. This was a really helpful guide to help me get the flow of the casting. Thanks and subbed! ❤
leveling summoner but built sch to help with faster dungeon leveling, and I am an experienced healer with whm/ast. At level 50 I unlocked it and found at THIS point in time, sch can be a little tricky. The ultima fights like to throw out a bunch of AOE. Whispering dawn will only be up for a few of them. Pre casting succor before every aoe helped a bunch as you still have no regens and your fairy will struggle healing all 5 of you. And if you have new people not avoiding mechanics, god help them. At this point in time you do not have enough group abilities to ensure your party reaches full hp all the time, so your group needs to be more relied on not to fail mechanics as they may not have their full hp to fix their mess. I don't intend to play sch when I hit 90 but it will be an interesting flight none the less. Barrier healers are a bit more difficult and I cannot tell you how many sages ive grouped with that struggle and even suffer deaths while I never see one pre casted shield before AOEs on bosses we have been killing for months.
Just gotta say. I'm coming back to the game after 2 years hiatus. I was playing SCH before, but have forgotten EVERYTHING. In my first dungeon back, I was so flustered and just defaulted to spamming adlo (as you had mentioned). This is a great guide!
As an OG SMN main, I took a huge Shadowbringers break and came back for Endwalker. Got my SMN to 90, finished MSQ, and started the gearing grind. Person at work was like Why deal with DPS queues when you already have a 90 healer and those queues are like instant? I was like I don’t have a 90 healer…………and then it dawned on me. Had completely forgotten about SCH. Not gonna lie, I wasn’t the biggest fan at first. I love AST healing. Love my cards and Horoscope and all that but Seraph and Eos are growing on me. Great guide by the way. Definitely helps.
18:00 wait… for that I’ll leave a sike, lomment, and cubscribe 😮 lvl 56 SCH and loving it so far, great content and cool to see I intuited some things, but learned a lot as well 😁🧚♂️🧙♂️
For some reason putting dots on every enemy is a issue for me sometimes. I mainly try to do so in the middle of pulls while the tank is running along. But once we come to a stop it's really complicated for me to dot all the enemies like 6 or more (depending on what enemy it is.) while trying to keep the tank alive at the same time. The mobs immediately rip through the barrier I provide for them, and I try to rely on my fairy to heal the tank while I'm placing these dots, but it's never really enough healing to make me feel comfortable enough to take my focus off the tank to apply bio. The only time I seem to be able to catch a break and manage this, is when I luck out on a critical barrier, which gives me time to either deal damage or dot.
im glad im not the only one that notices this lol! i wish they would give our fairies a stronger healing boost instead of hoping for crit heals and shields
Sounds like your tanks also need to check their gear. I have noticed a HUGE difference when tanks have top tier gear vs below lvl gear. Also, this video says to not use succor, but I cast it first at the entrance to every area and re-cast upon party stabilization. Interesting that it’s not recommended here.
Trying to learn SCH after playing AST for years and really struggling because there are just soooo many skills! I completely relate to what you said about new SCH just freezing up and spamming Adlo/Succor because I do the same thing. AF being only available in combat was frustrating since I was coming from SGE where Addersgal just replenishes on it's own. I really appreciate the tip of dotting an enemy while running to get it on CD sooner! I also think I'm going to try to remove some of the lesser-used skills (like Emergency/Deployment Tactics) from my bar until get comfortable with the basic rotation and see if that helps keep me from getting overwhelmed.
So glad it helped! I can be a struggle at first to not default spam but working other abilities in slowly is the way to go, like aetherflow abilities. I still forget to use the fairy abilities sometimes even now haha
I was really put off by this job originally as it looked complicated so I stuck to WHM but after watching this video I’m really enjoying the job and this tutorial has helped so much! Thank you so much! 😁
At the end "find my social ledia minks" Lol for real though this guide was great for me coming in fresh and learning scholar in DT as I am a tank main and want healing to be my second. Good video!
Thanks for the great video, did my first 90 after watching it and you made it very easy. I kinda leveled my SCH along with the SMN and still didn't know it very well.
I like casting Succor when I see one of the dps's getting low because that way I can heal them while also refilling the tank's barrier which makes having to stop healing the tank way less impactful.
i chose SMN as my first class (1st time playing ffxiv) and was going to switch to SAM or RMG at 50. But then I found out leveling SMN also levels SCH, so now I think I'll just continue doing what I'm doing. I can always go back and lvl the other two since they start at 50.
One thing I've learned through this guide and others, is that it's better to rotate your most powerful abilities instead of waiting for a rainy day. First, because of scholar's shield healer status, where most of their abilities are meant to prevent catastrophes, not react to them, but also because the more you use an ability, the more natural it becomes to use them. I'm saying that because for the longest time, I would sleep on things like Recitation or Deployment tactics, or even Seraph, because I thought those were just in case something went really wrong, and wouldn't you know it, I always had to struggle with my healing, popping emergency tactics + Succor or Adlo to save the party, which is, obviously, the absolute worst situation you can be in. Now, popping Recit + Adlo + Deployment + excog + Seraph + Whispering Dawn + Sacred Soil might be a little overkill on dungeon trash pulls or even on boss fights, but on the one hand, I'm less stressed about letting the tank die too quickly, and I can dish out a shit ton of damage. And hell, Aetherpact is there as well. I dunno maybe I'm playing it too safe and not optimally, but I like that.
I find myself going thru alot of cooldowns on trash pulls and barely any on bosses in dungeons. And I feel like some tanks overextend themselves a bit too much with pulls, I'm sure its doable late game pulling a whole room or 3 to 4 pscks of trash but I'm lvl 53 and its definitely a pain in the ass at lower levels.
I don't know why people hated Expedient. As a person that played WoW where Druids had ability called Stampeding Roar that boosted speed by 60% for 8 seconds and it was great in any Raids and in FFXIV we get similar ability that last x1.5 half longer why also giving damage reduction (that was added later) i knew that this ability will be good.
I'm new to the game (this week) and trying to get a feel for a few jobs just to lvl 30 (I know it doesn't give the full feel but wanted to try a dps tank and healer) lancer warrior are at 30 and now to try this and choose which I like best. Thanks for the videos dude
Is generally best too hold off using sacred soil for a while after you get it. It's rare that the 10% mitigation will actually prevent more damage than a lustrate can heal. (Higher levels soil becomes better) The exception is multiple aoes or if your dps has trouble not getting hit during pulls.
I play like all rolls and I try to get from every area at least one started with dragoon, then paladin, white mage. that was my main classes for the story later one, I started with a friend bard and last month I wanted to try the second type of healer: barrier aka scholar summoner would be my magic dps too and to one part, I'm a bit sad, that they really dropped it with the two different fairies have different skills. thought it will be like with mercy in Overwatch. one is for healing, the other is for buffs nontheless, I have to say, that with scholar at low lvl area, aka under 30, I think I never really used any healing except for the fairy one, even so I was confused about the auto heal of the fairy. the description wasn't so good and clear xD maybe the tank knew about it's stuff, but as I said: even in boss battle no struggle my white mage is at lvl 50-53 area and scholar only at 35, so big different and yeah I'm a noob, if it's about gameplay more as just bonking stuff, but scholar feels really comfy, even the barrier are sometimes just paper like shields xD
Using deployment tactics with Adlo is not just a 20% increase in shield size. Adlo base heal is 300 potency x180% = 540 potency shield spread. Succor is 200 potency x 160% = 320 potency shield. That is a whopping 68.75% difference in shield potency and even more so if crit. Also, you can use fey illumination and protraction on the person you’re going to Adlo to make that shield even bigger. Once you have recitation to guarantee the crit, you have the biggest party wide shield in the game. Spreadlo and succor are not even comparable.
We have all been there where dps aren't killing things fast enough and the tank isn't using cooldowns and so you have to burn through EVERY SINGLE ogcd etc you have and its just physick or adlo spam lol
ok I got hella confused for a moment I had a break of ffxiv and come back, played scholar and I play in German and what me confused is: sacred soil has a different text in German in German, it says (translated of course): "you sanctify a special area where your allies via a shield get 10% less dmg and regen their health the thing is: I read it always as: IF people have a shield, they will get a 10% reduction german text if people prefer: "Du weihst einen bestimmten Bereich, in dem Gruppenmitglieder durch einen Schild 10 % weniger Schaden erleiden und stetig LP regenerieren."
It's kinda weird that Ruin I evolves to Ruin II on Arcanist, but then splits off to it's own ability after taking on Scholar. At that point, Ruin II already established itself as an upgrade, so reverting it to a separate attack on this class is sorta confusing. Or maybe I'm just a new player.
@@BunBossFFXIV the progression flows nicely for summoner, but it feels disjointed for scholar. The first time I equipped the job stone (yesterday), it felt like a downgrade lol
Thanks for the wonderful guide. I noticed something while watching the video, when you have a trigger pulled, it doesn't show the name of the attacks from those hotbars. How'd you do that?
You can find it in my controller guide setup, which I recommend if your on controller but, Character config-hotbar-cross- uncheck display hot bar help or abilities, I can’t remember the exact wording off the top of my head
Fuuuuck, I need to relearn sch… sighs, okay lads. We got this. After breakfast I will be watching this video 6 or 7 times. I freebased the ast video like cocaine 🤣😂 until it was second nature to relearn that class. I’m halfway in and I’m just relearning the spell names. Been sooooo long. Watching first before I turn the game on. Next I’ll watch with the game on. So far so GREAT brother mine
I haven't played a Scholar since before Stormblood but I feel like I remember the fairies having an hp bar? Am I misremembering or is this also something that was removed? Ever since I came back I keep running across so many class and dungeon changes since I last played.
You keep your party bars in the top left corner of your screen. Are you watching those for healing? Or relying on the health bars above their character? Curious to know!
I play on a pc with controller, so its not much of a stretch to see the whole screen. If you were on a tv then you might want to move it near the middle of the screen.
This games fun but so odd with healers , you get healers that have a 15 second internal global cooldown and don’t press anything even though you’re 10% hp lol
The only person to ever pronounce Excogitation correctly can't pronounce recitation. You were the chosen one. You were supposed to bring balance to the game's vocabulary, not destroy it. 😢
@@BunBossFFXIV No seriously though man, like, you explain a couple of the skills which is great, but then you bust randomly into "yes we are a healer and technically we're shield players, but we wanna focus on barrier mitigation later on down the road rather than hard-casting shield abilities" Like, buhscuze me precisely? Haha can you elaborate on what any of that even means?

I like casting Succor when I see one of the dps's getting low because that way I can heal them while also refilling the tank's barrier which makes having to stop healing the tank way less impactful.
i chose SMN as my first class (1st time playing ffxiv) and was going to switch to SAM or RMG at 50. But then I found out leveling SMN also levels SCH, so now I think I'll just continue doing what I'm doing. I can always go back and lvl the other two since they start at 50.
your healing guides have been so helpful! I came from ESO, which has very different healing mechanics. Thanks a bunch!
I heard scholar wasn't the best choice for a new healer but I definitely like it the most, with sage in second 😅
I'm a smn main who finally decided to figure out scholar and this helps so much! Thank you!
Love this guide. You really break it down and make it easy to understand.
This was exactly what i was looking for, thank you :)
This is my fave scholar guide, thank you!
Thank you! 💜💜💜
This video is so helpful. Oh my gosh. Thank you!!
Omg thank you!!! So glad it helps!!
I appreciate the tips. I've been wanting to get into SCH but the confusion always gets me and I just give up and go back to healing as AST. lol
Yaaasss do it!
Thank you so much for your guides your awsome. I now main as a healer
Awww that is so awesome to hear!! So glad to help!
useful. thx. I've been playing scholar forever but I'm pretty sure I've been doing it wrong. this is helpful.
It really is great!!
the different between deployment tactics and succor is more than 20% since the latter is only based on 200 potency but the prior is based on 300 :D
This was super helpful as a noob healer! Thank you so much :D
Glad it helped!
I'm new to the game (this week) and trying to get a feel for a few jobs just to lvl 30 (I know it doesn't give the full feel but wanted to try a dps tank and healer) lancer warrior are at 30 and now to try this and choose which I like best. Thanks for the videos dude
So after getting scholar and leveling and doing a few dungeons, healing is pretty boring 😂 at least at low level, trying out ninja now 👀
Welcome aboard!
i m trying sch for ew after being an whm forever and i m struggling a bit so this was a great help 🙂
Yay so glad!!!
Is generally best too hold off using sacred soil for a while after you get it. It's rare that the 10% mitigation will actually prevent more damage than a lustrate can heal. (Higher levels soil becomes better)
The exception is multiple aoes or if your dps has trouble not getting hit during pulls.
Too many times i forget to heel my Fairy after boss fight. I wish there were mechanic that summons it right next to me instead of just despawning :(
Hahaaas yea that is annoying
I play like all rolls and I try to get from every area at least one
started with dragoon, then paladin, white mage.
that was my main classes for the story
later one, I started with a friend bard
and last month I wanted to try the second type of healer: barrier aka scholar
summoner would be my magic dps too
and to one part, I'm a bit sad, that they really dropped it with the two different fairies have different skills. thought it will be like with mercy in Overwatch. one is for healing, the other is for buffs
nontheless, I have to say, that with scholar at low lvl area, aka under 30, I think I never really used any healing except for the fairy one, even so I was confused about the auto heal of the fairy. the description wasn't so good and clear xD
maybe the tank knew about it's stuff, but as I said: even in boss battle no struggle
my white mage is at lvl 50-53 area and scholar only at 35, so big different and yeah I'm a noob, if it's about gameplay more as just bonking stuff, but scholar feels really comfy, even the barrier are sometimes just paper like shields xD
Nice video bro, how do you use switch to the other controls you have on screen ?
Double r2 and double tap l2. I have a controller guide in the controller playlist showing you how to set it up
We have all been there where dps aren't killing things fast enough and the tank isn't using cooldowns and so you have to burn through EVERY SINGLE ogcd etc you have and its just physick or adlo spam lol
ok I got hella confused for a moment
I had a break of ffxiv and come back, played scholar and I play in German and what me confused is: sacred soil has a different text in German
in German, it says (translated of course): "you sanctify a special area where your allies via a shield get 10% less dmg and regen their health
the thing is: I read it always as: IF people have a shield, they will get a 10% reduction
german text if people prefer:
"Du weihst einen bestimmten Bereich, in dem Gruppenmitglieder durch einen Schild 10 % weniger Schaden erleiden und stetig LP regenerieren."
I was spamming Adlo in my first dungeon run cus I thought it costs 1000MP which should be good and we died of cours XDXD
ohh awesome I have sch to 90 cause I leveled summoner and I'm trying out sch this helped alot thanks so much.
Stefan: because you know there are 2 mobs pulls before each boss...
Me: hmmmm, TBH, never thought about it...
🤣😂🤣
😂😂😂 most of the time there are some niche dungeons where there is more or less
It's kinda weird that Ruin I evolves to Ruin II on Arcanist, but then splits off to it's own ability after taking on Scholar. At that point, Ruin II already established itself as an upgrade, so reverting it to a separate attack on this class is sorta confusing. Or maybe I'm just a new player.
Nope I agree
@@BunBossFFXIV the progression flows nicely for summoner, but it feels disjointed for scholar. The first time I equipped the job stone (yesterday), it felt like a downgrade lol
Thanks for the wonderful guide.
I noticed something while watching the video, when you have a trigger pulled, it doesn't show the name of the attacks from those hotbars.
How'd you do that?
You can find it in my controller guide setup, which I recommend if your on controller but,
Character config-hotbar-cross- uncheck display hot bar help or abilities, I can’t remember the exact wording off the top of my head
@@BunBossFFXIV Thanks, I'll check out the guide too and I appreciate the help
How does one use right trigger and Left trigger I tried didn't work out for me :(
Fuuuuck, I need to relearn sch… sighs, okay lads.
So glad it helps!! 💯💯💯💯
@@BunBossFFXIV yeah, your guides are always tops brother
I haven't played a Scholar since before Stormblood but I feel like I remember the fairies having an hp bar? Am I misremembering or is this also something that was removed? Ever since I came back I keep running across so many class and dungeon changes since I last played.
illumination buffs embrace too btw
4:11 Ruin** Not Rune lol
Thanks for the guide though
Thank you for the nice sentence :)
I really think the way you have your skills laid out is interesting. Do you have a guide on that?
You can find them all under my controller playlist, and I have a skill layout for every single job
I need to use dissipation more instead of waiting for aetherflow ^^!
It’s a learning curve 💜
A year later and adlo only gives you 125% shield now, its rough, i feel like i have to spam adlo to keep the tank alive during big pulls
But how do you set up your hot bars like that? I wanna know how, does it make it easier?
You can find it under the controller playlist
You keep your party bars in the top left corner of your screen. Are you watching those for healing? Or relying on the health bars above their character? Curious to know!
I play on a pc with controller, so its not much of a stretch to see the whole screen. If you were on a tv then you might want to move it near the middle of the screen.
Thanks! I play controller as well, on pc and tv. So much easier to heal on controller after your videos. Thank you!
how do i get the 2 hotbars on screen at once with the controller? cant figure it out
+
In my controller guide playlist in the description box. A full video to show you how to do it
Yeah who uses Succor and Adlo anymore *sweats profusely*
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This games fun but so odd with healers , you get healers that have a 15 second internal global cooldown and don’t press anything even though you’re 10% hp lol
call me crazy but i still use physick at 90 when adlo isn't enough and i'm out of aetherflow stacks. crits 22-23k. Seems decent to me.
13:10 lies SCH is the hardest out of the 4. The other feel so much easier and better
Hahah it’s perspective if course. Scholar is pretty dang easy to me along with sage
Confusing to hear you pronounce Ruin "Rune"
The only person to ever pronounce Excogitation correctly can't pronounce recitation. You were the chosen one. You were supposed to bring balance to the game's vocabulary, not destroy it. 😢
You must be new here 😂😂 I regularly butcher words it’s kinda like a thing now lmao
Ex- Cawdge- uh- tay-shun. Why do people think it's cute to not spend 2 seconds to pronounce a word?
Lmao you must be new here
Recitation not Resuscitation.
Bro can you slow the actual hell down? SHEESH
Eh
@@BunBossFFXIV No seriously though man, like, you explain a couple of the skills which is great, but then you bust randomly into "yes we are a healer and technically we're shield players, but we wanna focus on barrier mitigation later on down the road rather than hard-casting shield abilities"
Like, buhscuze me precisely? Haha can you elaborate on what any of that even means?
