Nice video about sleds. I have a classic style sled ( that "found me" twice!! Second time I did purchase it. I keep it on display in my living room and love it. It's definitely a beautiful form of art that many people never get a chance to see.
I love that you adopted your beautiful huskies ❤
I'm on my second ( adopted for free) husky...and I am so amazed about these wonderful dogs.
I haven't ever done any dog sledding, but I enjoy your videos and learning about it- also enjoy the beautiful scenery ^..^

Thanks so much for watching! I agree, our classic sled will be a great conversation piece in the house, just as yours is. Great to hear you've adopted a free husky like we have. They are great dogs who just need a great home. I hope you get the chance to get your dog in harness sometime! Enjoy!

We have been doing "cani- cross"
I found a great company called Nonstop Dog wear. They make really great quality harnesses & leashes for all kinds of sports with dogs.

Do you know how thick the plastic is on the bed of the toboggan? I'm looking to build one this winter and haven't had much luck finding information on it..

Thank you for talking about sleds. I’m new to sled, but experienced at urban mushing/dryland When I moved to MI I found someone who was selling a basket sled. It turns out it a frank hall long runner type. It’s very stiff because it’s been bolted together so the stanton’s have no give. But it was a price I could afford. Haven’t really had many opportunities to use it in the two winters I owned it. You video will help me know better what I should look for/at if I sale this one for a different one. Thanks.
And being a hiker of the parts of the PCT with a husky I look forward to seeing more of your hiking videos too

Thanks for watching! I've done a lot of backpacking with dogs...thousand miles or so with just one of them...and I've had 15! Have you seen our video on thru-hiking the AT with a dog? We posted it just about a month ago.

Thanks for another great and informative video. I want to add a second dog soon and would be upgrading from my kicksled to something like you use. I was curious what your thoughts are regarding different sled materials, like wood vs wood+plastic vs aluminum? Any particular arguments pro or con for either or just individual preference? Thanks!

Thanks for the comments....I'm glad you found it informative. I like the plastic basket in the expedition style sleds...they're durable and can hold a lot of weight, including the weight of passengers.

Great video! I love seeing the different sleds. Mine is like your #2 sled. I ended up covering the handle with about 14 inches of leather w a baseball stitch. Turned out ok. Hands dont slip and I can feel the ends of the leather and place my hands in a good spot. What do you think about those new Alaska kicksleds? I wonder how they'd be with dogs pulling one...

That's a great suggestion regarding the leather on the handle. I may give that a try, though I still don't like how sharp a bend the handle takes and wish it was either a broader curve or just straightout horizontal. We have a mushing scooter that we use sometimes...I like the ability to stand and feel more like I'm on a sled, but kicking it along sometime can be a lot more work than peddling a bike. I've never tried one of the small kicksleds. The closest I have to that is the DYI sled I made out of a chair and an old pair of Nordic skis. We made two videos about that if you want to check them out. Thanks for watching!

I have a kicksled for my one-dog setup and I feel there's pros and cons to it. What I like is that it's small and I can fold it down, which makes for super easy storage and it fits in the back of the car. But on the con, I do have to work quite a bit on the back (although that's also because I only have one dog). The runners are shorter and don't have a very grippy surface, so it's a bit more unstable to stand on. While it is otherwise very easy to maneuver because it is so compact, I can also see that when you use a kicksled with more than one dog, that you'll lose some control and it'll be more difficult to sled on as your center of gravity isn't as well distributed as it would be with a longer sled.

@@huskytrails3654 Good to know! I was wondering about the stability of it, being smaller and all...

I have a classic sled like what you have. It's an arctic star made by Johnn Molburg. We had it refinished and re-tied a few years back by Johnn. It's very light and sturdy, but it's hard for the dogs to pull if the snow is too deep. I know that a tobaggan sled would be easier when there is more snow, but it is heavier and harder to pull in packed trails? Does it make a lot of noise when running over rough snow?

Toboggan sleds aren't necessarily any heavier than a basket sled...it all depends on the overall length. I've never noticed any difference between one and the other regarding noise. All things being equal, I prefer a toboggan sled. The only reason I've used my basket sled more often this year is that I don't have a bag for my toboggan sled. Thanks for watching!
