    As a sweaty gal it has been life changing to realise how severely polyester was doing me dirty. The difference between being kinda sweaty and gross by late afternoon vs 10mins into the day is crazy. And it was defo subscribing to your channel and your vocal hate of polyester that made me really evaluate every polyester item I wore and realise they were never comfy. Currently gradually phasing them out as I find natural fibre alternatives 2nd hand. Thanks for ur service 🫡

    I live where it's regularly above 100 in summer 🤮 , and I burn easily. Find ways to get air between you and your fabrics. I often wear button-ups or thin cotton cardigans mostly unbuttoned, and I look for items with vents, side slits, mesh sections, pleating, buttons in the back, or "tulip" construction (two pieces of layered fabric that split out). These types of things help so much with cooling and shade and limit fabric touching your skin. And depending on the fit, they really don't have to be super revealing if you're not wanting that.

      Yes! I like to wear light button-ups almost like a cardigan in the summer and just close a couple of buttons, leaving it mostly open for ventilation. Then if I end up somewhere where more coverage is appropriate, I can just do up more of the buttons.

    Wool can work for hot weather too! The important thing to pay attention to is the weight of the fabric. Yes, wool is often used for warm winter clothes, but it can come in different weights just like cotton. Since it's a natural fiber, a light-weight wool can be a nice breathable option for summer as well!

  • @ArtichokeHunter

    I appreciate you pointing out that rayon and linen are generally good as summer fabrics. I feel like a lot of folks rule out rayon just because synthetics=bad, and I guess maybe linen is out of trend because people seem to be negative about it too.
    I chafe at the anti-synthetic generalizations a bit because outdoorswear/hiking clothes are essential to my lifestyle and synthetic. Microplastics are a real issue but my clothes need to hold up to brambles, rain, mud, and just generally wear well with fewer washes so I can keep them tick-resistent (the chemicals wash out if you wash too much). Lifestyle definitely makes a difference in what fabrics make the most sense and how much showing skin is worth it (shorts and sleeveless things are also rarely a good idea with brambles and mosquitoes, and I wouldn't wear sandals in the woods).

    • @BC-np8cb
      @BC-np8cb 3 месяца назад +9

    Friendly neighborhood adventure guide chiming in to add that cotton takes a suuuuuuper long time to dry, so if it's extra humid (or even raining), know that you will be wet for a longer time than while wearing synthetics (+1 for rayon! omg much lightweight/ breathable, very quick dry)
    But maybe you want that because it'll keep you cooler? I put my funky short sleeve button ups directly in the river before a day of rock climbing in the sun, lol

    For girlies without a thigh gap who like to wear skirts, I like to apply a very oily lotion to prevent chaffing in that area instead of wearing an extra (usually skin-tight, sweat producing) garment. I use one from a brand called Booda Butter or just plain coconut oil sometimes.

    As someone who lives in a country that is very hot most of the year, YESSS the best thing to spice up outfits in the heat are accesories! Hats, sunglasses, kerchiefs and bags, of course, but also jewelry and hairstyles, like Liz said ❤ Watches and anklets are staples for me. You can also play with your lipstick colors and styles! Makeup is tricky in hot weather because of the sweat and humidity, but lips are safe from that! And we have really good longwear lip products nowadays.
    The general rules for me, dry vs humid heat:
    For dry heat and lots of sun/UV, like in spring, go for dark or thick but breathable, airy loose fabrics. That's what people in deserts do. The airflow will keep you cool and the dark colors protect from UV. Denim is a great fabric for this weather because it will also protect from UV but it's not hot because it's made of cotton. Also carry an umbrella and hat everywhere, they're amazing for sun protection (get an opaque umbrella designed for sun protection when possible too!). The sole fact that you're not under direct sun will keep you cooler. Always seek shade!
    And for humid heat, the least amount of clothes the better, tbh. Shorts, breezy dresses and sleeveles tops, etc. Sports fabric or natural fibers are great for sweat. Honestly if you want to wear swimwear as normal clothing they work amazingly well 👌 Just live your life like you're on the beach mamma mia style 😅 Cotton and linen are breathable but they dry slowler than synthetic sports fabrics. Thin, sheer fabrics are tour friends. Thin breathable overshirts are great to cover from the sun as you go from one shade place to another. You'll probably also have lots of sun, but sometimes there's also rain so the heat and UV isn't as bad. Still, umbrellas and sunglasses are amazing. Hats can be tricky as you'll get sweaty. Try a natural fiber one like a traditional woven hat or visor type hats. Avoid plastic shoes as they'll get very sweaty and hot (avoid vegan/fake leather). Think rattan or leather sandals or fabric breathable shoes instead.
    And make sure to wear sunscreen, people!! Find one you enjoy using and lather it on whatever uncovered skin. Skin cancer is no joke ☀️

    • @AR........
      @AR........ 3 месяца назад +2

      there are far too many different definitions of modesty for any one person to cover all of modest fashion
      if you want to safely cover more skin in the summer, the golden rule is to go with loose-fitting light-colored clothing made from lightweight fabrics, ideally made up of natural fibers (or rayon/viscose) .....or i guess its the less-golden rule bc the covered skin will be less exposed to damage from the sun
      every piece of clothing does not need to be all of those things but the more of those qualities they have, the cooler you will be

I live where it's regularly 110 in the summer, and I practically live in cotton, flowy sundresses (plain cotton, lightweight cotton knit, cotton gauze, and cotton seersucker). I find I need a lightweight layer often though as the a/c is so cold in many places. My favorites are a cashmere cardigan (fits in most bags) or a cotton gauze button-up shirt with sleeves. Another reason to avoid synthetic fabrics in summer is that smells somehow get trapped in synthetic fabrics, which makes them remain even after laundering. You can fix it by letting the garment soak in a water-vinegar mixture and washing them afterwards, but that's a process you'd have to repeat every once in a while, while I never have to do it with my cotton tees! I do prefer to wear performance fabrics for sports-related activities, though.

I really lean on fun graphic and pattern prints (including bottoms!) to show my style in the summer with accessories to match (although if it’s hot, even a hat can be too sweaty). For wool in the summer, merino wool or merino wool combined with tencel or rayon can still feel light and help with humidity and sweat smells (wool is anti-odor as is linen).

Yes, it will not stop the sweating, but it will help with the smell, because it kills the bacteria causing the nasty Sweat smells. This way I usually get away with using no deodorant and just delicious smelling body lotion :) However, your skin might dry out, so test it out once or twice before using this tip regurlarly. It's flowy and frilly with an elastic waistband and every summer I wear it multiple times because it's just so easy to throw on and it's cute as heck.
    Now, contrary to your advice, I'm looking forward to getting a long-sleeve summer dress because I have to avoid sun to the best of my ability. I've had a chosen fabric (old light pink bedsheets that are worn soft) for some years already but I'm just afraid to ruin the sewing project... Luckily mum has promised to help and I hope to finally get it done this year :DD

    Actually while regular fast fashion polyester fabrics are horrible for warm weather, it’s not actually true that natural fibers always are the best. Cotton is actually not very breathable at all (it’s a huge faux pas to wear on a hike etc),and there are loads of techical synthetics that are made for transporting moisture off your body and then dry the fabric quickly. Wool is actually one of the very best materials for transporting moisture off your body, it stays almost dry and doesn’t smell. Although for fashion there is not many options for cute styles but there should be!

    To my thighs-chafing girls out there: wide linen pants and viscose palazzo pants are your best friends in the summer. You can find ways to make the other combos work (talc, anti-chafing shorts or stick..) but pants will be your one and done, I thought it had to be said since it wasn't included in the video. Just be picky about the fabric and you're good to go. Also: no need to shave, no sitting in dirty places with your skin exposed, no need for sunscreen on your legs. Coming from a girl with thighs that chafe myself, it's a win-win situation!!

    Well I HAVE TO wear shorts under all my skirts and dresses even though I only wear midi and maxi lenght. I just want to avoid chub rub at all costs.
    My summer nemesis are polyester and chubrub 😂😂

    Here in summer it's usually 95->113 F and I 100% agree w/ your recomendations. If I had to add, I love flowy skorts as I truly hate how small tight shorts look on me, and if I'm going to be out I will be carrying a big bag (usually a tote) to have sun cream, water, a water spray, tissues and a fan if needed.

    So funny that immediately after you say that you don't even need to accessorize a dress, up pops a picture of a woman in a black dress styled with a beautiful fruit and flower headdress that probably weighs as much as my (small floofy) cat

    You are being unfair to wool. In hot weather, wool can be worn, but it must be made from hight quality fine fibers. Wool creates a microclimate between the body and the fabric, but such fabrics are quite expensive and cannot be found on the mass market.

    thigh rubbing requires safety shorts, I love my snag tights cooling ones since they are size inclusive and last actual years! safety shorts aren't just for flashing, they're also for chub rub. cute linen dresses are my go to for summer

    When it's really hot and I know I'm going to be active (at a festival, walking the doggo, generally on the move), I love to wear workout (running) shorts with a built-in panty. Most of these running shorts are wicking polyester, and they help keep all your business feeling fresher vs. sweaty cotton undies. Not all polyester is bad!

      loose flowy clothes that are light colored and made from lightweight natural materials will keep you as cool or cooler than shorts and tank top can
      as a general rule, you will feel cooler the less the sun is shining on you so creating shade for your skin by covering it with clothing will make a big difference - as long as the clothing is loose. if the fabric is tight against your skin, it will be worse than wearing nothing

    I have no issues with polyester as long as it's soft light and loose, and also, because I live on a tropical island, I really can't get away with wearing clothes twice, so I haven't had any issues with the smell as everything I wear has to be immediately washed 😅

    • @erinvanhandel
      @erinvanhandel 3 месяца назад +2

      Agreed! Also, basically every "performance" wicking fabric is polyester, and if you would wear it to keep you cool during a workout, why not try it on a blazing hot day?

      I appreciate the more nuanced takes on polyester in the comments here. I had been influenced into a strict no polyester policy, but I’ve recently realized that it’s ok sometimes. I felt that I was limiting myself too much and needed to focus more on the feel of the fabric than what it says on the label.
      But also, if it says rayon on the label, I’m running in the opposite direction. 😂 I need to be able to put my clothes in the washing machine.

    • @beepwrld
      @beepwrld  3 месяца назад +4

      I'm glad to hear polyester works better for a lot of people in the comments than it does for me, because that can be super limiting!! even for workout clothes I don't prefer it, but I realize that may be an uncommon stance hahah
