You do outstanding videos, Ryan. I love that you're even-tempered and calm just like working a lawn should be. You don't try to over-stylize your videos or get a catch phrase off every 10 seconds. So easy to watch I come back to them every year. Thanks.
In Texas we used straw hay when reseeding and overseedind. We have hot and windy days, and get big rains similar to what you are seeing. The hay holds tight and stays in place. Once the grass takes hold just rake up the hay. Sounds like a pain but beats having to go back and forth.
@@jayrose9463 I just leave the straw down, it breaks down over time or the mower will pick up the loose ones once the lawn is ready to mow. Works fine. Raking it will risk damaging the grass seedlings.
I have been using ur tips on my brothers and my lawns for the past few years. So far I have very good results. I have started to renovate my parents lawn this August and I have absolutely zero growth from the overseeding I did 3 weeks ago. I used Scott's kbg, I know what u'll say that kbg takes longer to germinate but I used the same seed on my lawn to fix a few spots and I had growth in a week. I also applied 100lbs of lime on 2k sqf, Milorganite and Walmart fertilizer with iron.
Hi Ryan. Thanks for the videos. I'm completely renovating my lawn and the Peat Moss has really helped the seed germinate in some of the areas of my lawn. Unfortunately, many areas on a slope had runoff during a storm. Can I put this EZ straw on top of peat moss in these areas or just put EZ straw down on top of the seed? Thanks for your help.
I think this video brings up a few ideas for tests on the effectiveness of the straw and or combinations of that with peat moss. I know Ryan said, below, he would just use one or the other, but maybe it would be an interesting experiment to try straw by itself on a slope vs. straw watered in a bit and let to tackify, then some peat moss lightly tossed in. Might be a wonderful combo for better germination! Thoughts?
You can’t predict the weather, always frustrating when things don’t go as planned, you can always mow” steptoe and sons” yard next door if your itching for a mow ,get in good with the neighbour. 😁🤣👍👍I haven’t had any decent rain in months ,very dry and heading into summer on the east coast of Australia.
I found out ez straw does not go as far as they say 250-300sq ft at the best. So I use grass clippings but not to heavy plus as it breaks down feeds ur seedlings small amounts of nitrogen and in June I had growth in two days with fescue mix was amazing.
Thoughts on using a tarp. Seen quite a few videos where you plant seed, wet, cover with tarp and that helped with preventing birds, hold on moisture, ect.. all had great germination. one side of me says makes sense, but one side says really? No light, no oxygen, ect… but people swear by it. Btw- I’m in MN as WELL,so using a sun shade mix or kbg
Great progress Ryan..keep going, Question: If we top dress the soil on top of existing grass does that prevent those grasses growing up ? or it will come anyway? Are there any recommendation like, do not completely cover the existing grass with top soil ?
If you cover it completely then it won't grow back. Putting it down in multiple lighter applications would be best if you are wanting to preserve the existing grass.
I think the correlation between germination and peat moss is more about where the peat moss and Seed both come to settle. That said, It still says nothing about how well it holds down seed, clearly doesn't do well.
That's true it settles some in those areas but I've used peat moss for years and in flat areas too and where I didn't use it, germination was not as thick. Correct though as well that it doesn't hold.
I loathe using peat moss on seed and this time for my personal lawn, I was forced too. It washes away far too easily. We got Flooding rains, twice, since I seeded. Expectations are low.
I pretty much use blankets for most things now as they stay in place better in storms etc. Peat for small fixes works well but otherwise it can be such a disappointment when it washes away.
Ryan , maybe you have told this already, but I am new. I just reseeded my lawn. The company put down a straw blanket. In some places is flat to the ground, others it's on top of the grass which is now 4+ inches. It is very patchy...My question, I was told I could mow after it get up about 4 inches. Well do I mow with this straw blanket on? Do I take it off. I'm afraid it will wrap around the mower blade and burn up the motor. What is the proper way?
Hey, ordered starter fertilizer 19-26-6 from grass seed superstore. My lawn is 2,500 square foot. I only used haft the bag as the bag covers 5,000 square foot. Wondering if I should do another application or if I should just hold off till next year? Thoughts?
We are into the 40s at night already! Good thing my kbg came in already. all your new rye is looking good so far! I'm hesitant to do rye as I've heard it isnt as cold tolerant. Maybe that's a myth. But I really love kbg and I think I'm still going to do straight up kbg next year. I'm right along zone 5a/5b so maybe it will be ok. Rye is certainly cheaper than then super elite kbg.
I haven't had any rye dye off in the past couple of winters but I'm using some of the best of the best for cultivars. Summer is another story because it just doesn't like heat. I didn't have much die off there either but it just looks a little stressed all the time.
Never heard that but i can tell you rye is not fungus resistant in my area you flat out cannot seed rye other than late fall otherwise you catch a couple nights of 75deg and pithium wipes it out
Would you recommend I put straw over the peat moss? I think I just added less than a quarter inch. And we've been getting A LOT of heavy rain here lately. I've never had success with growing lawn seed. This is my first attempt with peat moss though. Maybe I need to try a different grass seed to.
I would use one or the other. Peat moss washes away fairly easily but in the end I still prefer it to this straw. I am still finding this straw not broken down months and months after seeding.
Spring can be done but it's just more difficult to get things growing and keep it alive during our summer heat that first year. I am hoepfully here that I can still get this growing enough to be ok before winter.
So I live in western Oklahoma and am about to look at seeding an area where a pool was what would be the best choice of grass seed that I can pick up from like an ace hardware and would you suggest maybe putting grass shavings on I said area after grass it was down
Indeed, fingers crossed for no freezes, maybe we can make it to november.... any idea what your p.h. is? I got an electronic meter and I was getting readings of 4.4(!) until it broke.
A laid down peat moss for my new seed. It rained a couple days ago and the peat moss stayed wet the day after, even with no watering and some sun. Should I keep putting water on it or just let it be, even though it looks wet? Also, we had a pretty bad storm, and the winds were a good 40-50 mph. There's quite a bit of debris where I laid the seed down, will it damage my seed if I step on it to remove it?
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care sorry I should have said that. It’s a 3 blend of TTTF from Lesco supposedly for my area. Starting to look really nice. Thanks to your help
Is the mic really close to the reel mower is sounds so loud ... is it that loud? I wanted to get one so I can mow early in the morning and not wake my neighbors
Hi Ryan!! I’m in Seattle Washington. On sept 8 I top dress with 60 %sand and 40% compost . I had to put more on lower spots try to level certain area. I also reseeded with Scott pacific northwest blend. As of today there are many spots that hasn’t germinate. How would you handle this ?
Did I miss a video? What is the conclusion? Peat moss does better in good conditions but straw is better in wind? Or is straw better in all conditions ? (Plus straw is cheaper)
Exactly right that peat moss does fine in good conditions and on more level ground but rain storms still move it very easily. Straw does better on the slopes but you have to make sure there's a layer there that's watered in before storms/heavy wind comes or it will blow away easily.
How much peat moss per 1000 square foot do you suggest? I am doing a leveling project in my backyard here in a couple weeks and I am unsure of how much to get.
It’s 2020, but I think it doesn’t matter. I have slope lawns and definitely you recommend straw than peat after seeding, right? I didn’t do well because there were no your videos🤗
I have bare spots on my lawn after declaring war on clover, was going to buy seed to fill them in but realized I have no clue what grass I have (started as sod) and therefore no clue as to what kind of seed to get for the bare spots. Don't want a mish mash of different grasses.
I trust Scotts.. More importantly for $135 which is what they want for 35lbs I could pick up 5 bags and overseed once in the spring and once in the fall.
I got Scott's pure ryegrass mix goes for about 25 dollars for a 7 lbs bag but half the weight is the seed coating and possible has some weed seeds. From Seed ranch I bought my Moonlight Kentucky blue grass seed 55 bucks for 10 lbs no coating.

Thumbs up on the straw. Worked well on my steep banks. I tried seed twice with topsoil only and it all washed away. Very frustrating! Great vid Ryan
I have had the same issue with run off so know you are not alone with the frustration!
Hi, love ur lawn and ur dedication, 2 weeks since my KBG reno on the new house I moved into a month ago. Ur my Superman. From Woodbridge, ON, Canada.

Could you bag it with a zero turn mower? Or does it have to come up before you mow?

Did you keep the seed moist? If you wet it down several times a day (I use a sprinkler timer) it really comes in quickly.
Hmm that is a bit strange. There can be different variables but I would think you would at least see something by now.
Yes, used the sprinkler system twice a day plus it has been raining
I'm just thinking the soil is too acidic.
You have a salad bar of grass types now.
Rye and Bluegrass which is what I've always had.
Have you ever tried Pennington Slopemaster tackifier ? Very economical and works great on slopes.
I put a heavy coat of compost down and seed with the straw to help prevent washing out
Love these daily videos lately!

It’s coming along!
Slow but sure.

Ryan- if you had only one choice of turf seed to use on your property which would it be: Ryegrass, TTTF, or Kentucky Blue.
If I had the climate I would have a full ryegrass lawn.
👍

For sure it moves around quite a bit. If you have a flatter surface it can work but any slopes and it's gone.
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care Yessir. Mine is flat but the rains..oh man the rains. I feel like my name is Toto and I am in Africa.

Came back to this great video. You should do a new Peat Moss vs Straw video at your new place.

Which blankets do you use? Mind sharing the store or name of

It just has a roller on the back that came with it.
