This is a fascinating disappearance, and I'm delighted you included his stepping into a 'Fairy Ring' as a possible explanation. Orion's voice may have been heard by his wife for a short while after his disappearance because he, at that point, had not accepted food or drink from the Fairy Folk. He may have been in the 'in-between' but once you consume food or drink in the Fairy Realm you cannot return to your loved ones. Unless, that is, the Fairy change their mind and send you back. There are recorded accounts from Ireland, of people who have 'reappeared' after decades or generations away, having not aged a day and claiming to have been with the Fairies. They soon discovered their whole family were dead and their family home no more than a pile of rocks. These people are often shunned by the community for fear of their connection with the unpredictable and dangerous Fairy Folk and driven from their Ancestral district. Many laugh them off, but entering, or meddling with, Fairy Rings is a dangerous game. Thanks for such a wonderful video. Cheers, Kitty.

Did he go into an alternate universe and not be able to get back? Or a time slip? Or is that what a Faery Ring actually is? It’s creepy enough for him just to disappear….but then to hear him calling for help adds a whole new dimension of horror to the tale.

Ambrose Bierce’s disappearance was generally accepted to be at the hands of pancho villa. He was, after all, last seen in the area of panchos reign, as a journalist, at the time of his disappearance. Pancho was notoriously vain, and it is speculated that he could not persuade Bierce, to paint him in the same light as Hollywood had. Bierce had taken an oath of truth, and pancho was no hero in real life, but a violent and merciless villain.

Just like you, disappearances interest me,especially if it is something that can't be explained. My question. Would you ever consider going to the said location of Orions disappearances and see what would happen if you placed something there? I would but as far as actually standing in the spot. Nope. Very nice and interesting video and again an awesome collaboration. I saved to Playlist and subbed to the channel that you featured. Took my mind off being sick for sure. Many Blessings

Loved it. I've come across both this story (which is widely circulated still) and the Tianog tale elsewhere - it is interesting to see how you link them together and bring in the fairy rings legends too. Must admit, I'm a sceptic - somewhere on Wikipedia there's a thorough debunking of the story, stating that Orion never existed, and that Ambrose Bierce made the story up. Now that is quite possible, given the fact that US papers of that era often made up 'johnny warbies' or 'baba misteg' purely for the amusement of their readers - but, like the Loch Ness Monster, its more fun just to take the story with a shovelful of sodium chloride, suspend belief and unbelief and enjoy it!

I have heard of this disappearance before and it is frightening and very sad. I feel sorry for him and his family and wonder what happened to them after losing the husband and father.
I have a (imo) scarier theory about the disappearance.
But first: Research shows that eyewitnesses are actually very unreliable, even when there is a group of them. Cognitive research shows that the brain is very quick at making new "memories" and can't distinguish between real facts and fantasy. (I recently took a course in this subject; very interesting!). The reports also depend on whether the interviewer has asked the right questions. What exactly did they see? Were they all looking at him the whole time? I haven't heard any detailed description of the incident. What _exactly_ did they mean when they said that he disappeared?
    So...
My theory is that he fell into a very narrow cave opening or sink hole, and that the hole was very deep. It could have been partly covered by roots and twigs or grass and very hard to discover. When he fell he hit his head or was injured some other way and lost consciousness for a while. When his wife heard his voice later it was his real voice, because the poor man was stuck down there and couldn't move. He went in and out of consciousness and eventually starved to death, wishing for help that never came.

    • @DixieAfterDark
      @DixieAfterDark  9 месяцев назад +3

It's definitely a much scarier theory there. Not one I had considered, but now that you lay it out, it could be plausible, especially if it were a sink hold that perhaps filled in behind him, sort of like a cave in. If he were trapped in a pocket of sorts then, it all makes sense. There could have been a crevice or cave within the bedrock they found, and they just didn't dig in the right place. Good theory. Thanks for that.

In one of her books, Laura Ingalls Wilder mentions a "fairy ring" when her baby sister, Grace, goes missing. In this case, Pa tells Laura that the place where Grace is found is a "fairy ring", not made by ethereal creatures but in fact a buffalo wallow that has created a swamp like area on a prairie. Could it be possible that he perhaps disappeared into that and was not discovered? Sorry, I am from Australia so not sure if that would even be possible. Just remember reading it in Laura's book and as a child, being fascinated by the idea.

    • @DixieAfterDark

Hmm, not Buffalo in the part of the country that this story takes place, but an interesting idea. That's the first I've heard about that, so now you have me curious. I read that story by Bierce several years ago. I didn't realize it was inspired by real events.
Come to think of it...there is another Bierce story in the "Ghost and Horror Stories of Ambrose Bierce" that breaches the same subject of alternate realms adjacent to our own. I don't remember the specifics, but it was a story of this guy finding an old abandoned house and going inside to wait out a storm. He ended up getting trapped in another dimension behind a one way door. The detail that sticks out was the room he was trapped in was lit by a green light and littered with dried corpses. Spooky shit to think about.

It is impossible as we have stated it and so in some way we have stated it wrong.- Sherlock Holmes. He walked into a field in front of a bunch of people and vanished. I'll offer another explanation.
suppose he was never in that field. At least not as a living man. There are enough reports of people being 'seen' at home or somewhere familiar, when in fact they were at that moment dying somewhere else. suppose he was killed/died some where else at that moment and his doppleganger/ghost appeared in the field, as if walking home to the family. I will say he was murdered because dead bodies have a way of turning up unless dealth with but with all the focus on the farm where he was 'seen' it would give the killer a clearer filed to get rid of the body.

Glad you enjoyed it. I'd love to see what sort of paranormal evidence could be gathered at a site like this. I wonder what overlap and straight differences someone like you would encounter?

to me,whatever takes place in this world is directly tied to God and Jesus so this sort of thing aint possible. But on the other hand you cant just say that this didnt take place cuz it dont fit neatly into the bible simply because of all the details involved in this story. Sooo how in the world does this work? I'd like to know if he was a christian or not. Ive been a Christian all my life but ive had the misfortune of learning things that aint talked about in sunday school. And those things are real,so i believe that this case happened. But where did he go?

Great questions. Angels and demons are interdimensional beings as well, so don't get too caught up with folklore calling it "fairy". Could very well be the same things under different wording.

What about God just took him. Like he did Elijah.

I think this has been debunked as having originated from a short story. No real trace ever of anyone by this name.

You could be right. I found nothing concrete, just local retelling. I did see the short story that Bearce wrote, but there were multiple conflicts with its date versus what a lot of people said. I never could nail down an exact timeframe.
