That's because you didn't have a virus, you had a chrome pop up lying to you that you had a virus. They do this to get you to call a number and scam you even more. Do not download ANYTHING from untrusted sites, because this is what could give you a real virus. Do not click on random links either, even if they're on youtube.
I belive that using Firefox browser is good option in such scenario because Firefox allows to install addons like uBlock Origin, which after proper configuration (checking correct filters) should block or disable ads, especialy those which are maliciouse.

the chrome one also sometimes notifications go while its not in the browser its mostly because of those sites with robot verification that says to enable notifications and if you dont they dont let you go in the site but if you enable the notifications then the site will be added to chrome sites notification option in settings and chrome so you disable chrome notifications if you dont want random sites notification going in your notifications.
