Also 'broken meats' was actually referring to table scraps specifically in Shakespeare's time, leftovers from feasts would go to the poor and beggars outside. I have a hand boiler, and I love the thing. The only problem I have is that I always feel like it's going to explode when I'm using it, so I don't actually use it very often. Minutes after writing the original version of my comment, I got out my hand boiler and shortly after doing so, I found that you can use it by cooling the top globe as well as VERY SLIGHTLY heating the bottom globe. We also have the same safety glasses.
cooling the top tube reduces pressure, essentially sucking the liquid up, wheres as if you heat the lower part, it builds pressure and forces the liquid to the upper part. #science xd
For the hand boilers the air pressure inside is likely very low and so the boiling point of the liquid is reduced significantly as a result. This phenomenon can also be observed by putting a liquid such as water into a vacuum chamber, where it will boil at room temperature.
