Bitter pit is caused by too much nitrogen in the soil. When I was growing apple trees in Indiana as a teenager, my dad would fertilize the lawn under the trees, making the fruit inedible. When I had him stop doing that, the problem was solved. I would say don't fertilize vulnerable varieties with chicken manure, or perhaps at all.
Great videos - enjoying all of them! Agree about Gold Rush. It always comes in on top or near it in our apple-tasting parties. The other one that ranks high is Opal.

Some trees have not received any nitrogen or manure in the past 5 years. It has shown no difference in bitter pit. I think it has more to do with soil type, PH, and moisture

I grow Arkansas Black in the county of N W Arkansas where it originated. It’s my favorite apple very dense flesh with almost an oily, waxy skin that Dr Burford has said can resist coddling moth. Wonderful flavor. I’m very interested to see what your cross with Black Strawberry will result in.

Thanks for your videos! We haven't gotten a frost, yet, out here on the coast, but it's gotten into the thirties a couple of nights. I just picked my one and only Blue Pearmain (should have been picked a few days ago) and my last Zabergau Reinette (should have waited a few more days) today. Getting the timing right is tricky.

Your videos are invaluable. Where else can you find information like this? True experience. I just got two trees today and your videos really help me to make my decision. I'm very limited in space will likely try grafting other varieties onto the two I got today so I can expand the number of varieties, but that is a plan for down the road.

Apples can reliably take down to 28 a few hours. Any lower or longer the quality suffers. I too, notice a berry tone to Arkansas Black. Definitely a favorite. I really love your taste comparison videos.
