Awesome content Jason. I’m wondering how small tweaks like this and major changes (like developing Basecamp 3 redesigns) are budgeted for out of the same resources. Ryan’s videos talk about “large batch” (6 week) and “small batch” (
This was a full 6 week project because it involved a complete redesign of the find/search feature. It wasn't just the copy link part. But even if it was just the copy link part, it would be a few days. We budget for both big and small projects in a cycle. One team of 3 handles big, and a team of 2 or 3 handles all the small ones. -JF
What was the design decision behind the 2d inline icons like boosts as opposed to flat icons like schedule and copy? Was it to get show clear differentiation between inline vs others, allow for native keyboard emojis, just for fun, etc.?
Love the videos and love the product! I do have a question about why something is the way it is. The main tool we use on Basecamp is the To-dos. Why is the feature to add subscribers on a to-do only available below on the thread and not when initially creating the to-do (like an added line under the assignees)? Since our team recently started using Basecamp, we essentially wish it had the equivalent of an email cc when creating the to-do. Instead of needing to create the task, then click into the task, select the people that need to see it but are not assigned the task, and click add subscribers.
Good question. We decided assignments and notifications on completion were the most important bits to set up when setting up a to-do. Conversation about the to-do is secondary, and most to-dos don't have comments. Subscriptions to the comments below are handled the same way universally across the product, so we kept them as is.
I use it both ways. Just depends. When I do screencasts I often use the app so I'm not revealing URLs. Also less chrome in general - just the Basecamp UI and nothing else. -JF
Amazing content. Thank you Jason for sharing some insight about the decision making of product.
Great video! Thanks for doing these, would love to see more.

Jason Fried Cool. Thanks for the reply. Loving the documentary style of this channel.

No real strategy here - just felt right.
Love the videos and love the product!

Tbh I was just trying to find the I am Frankie theme song, but I found this channel...
Interested to know why you use Basecamp in the app and not a browser.
