I did my best to explain a decent amount without spoiling too much. Basically trying to seduce you with Leguin's amazing work so you'll give it a go. :) Checkout the first book: bookshop.org/p/books/a-wizard-of-earthsea-1-ursula-k-le-guin/6389611?ean=9780547773742 Check out the complete series here: bookshop.org/p/books/the-books-of-earthsea-the-complete-illustrated-edition-ursula-k-le-guin/217976?ean=9781481465588
Would I be able to seduce you with Ursula Le Guin’s Sci Fi Series? The Hainish Cycle is truly excellent with multiple Hugo, Nebula, and Locus awards given to the series. The series is powerful and evocative with multiple deep dive narrative discussions on themes such as imperialism, capitalism, anarchism, utopia, gender, racism, sexism, and more. I highly recommend and would love more Ursula Le Guin discussion! She is an absolute badass and one of my fav authors :)
This is perhaps the most beautiful, philosophical and sad story that I've ever read (throughout all books). And I read them once, put them on high regard, and since I try to find the right mood to read it again. It's not long, but it takes a huge toll. This last book, man... I got shivers just thinking about it now. :((
What's interesting about women being barred from studying at the school of Role and other misogynist elements of the world is that le Guin later realized she has unintentionally created a world where women weren't equal. I read somewhere that Tehanu (the 4th book) was an answer to this realization. This book portrays so well what it is like to be an unseen and powerless woman in a patriarchal society, that I cried my eyes out. I really appreciate how le Guin has addressed her blind spots from earlier books, not just regarding earth sea but for example regarding The left hand of darkness as well
She lived in a world like that, I find it laughable that some people would like to find her work 'problematic' she build her fantasy from the world she knew. Its not a role of every artist to be on a mission to change the world for the better. She just wanted to tell her stories. Seems like nowadays storyteller and activist have to be one person and there's little respect for author's and stories coming from different age and mindset.
@Cypeq Since its fantasy is it's so crazy She makes a better world for women? And also the person who posted the original post. Are you really so oppressed?
Back in grade 6 I gained access to our high-school library. The memory I have of searching the stacks and finding this book is one of my most cherished. I highly recommend watching the documentary they did about her a few years ago. 10/10 my all time favourite story.
I like that you used the Ghibli film to represent some of the places and characters! It may have been a bad adaptation writing wise, but the art is fantastic.
I was introduced to Earthsea in the worst possible way. The sci-fi channel miniseries. I gave the first book a try and it didn't grab me, but because I'm a literary hoarder, I still have it (it's been almost 20 years). Because of this video, I'm going to give it another go. Thank you 🙏🏻
Honestly, the book can be a little bit of a struggle because of the time period it was written in. I always find books from the 60's and 70's to frequently be a slog for one reason or another. There were writing trends at the time that a modern reader can sometimes find difficult to get passed, such as how often whole sections of books will just be talking heads.
Finished it a couple weeks ago. Started a little slow, but really took off once he got to Roke. Older me really enjoyed it and is looking forward to the second book.
Earthsea hit me right in the need-more-Tolkien spot. Poetic descriptive writing, subtle conversations, deep themes - a pliable world with a hard magic system. Room for many stories. 2 is my favourite but 4 made me tear up and 5 hit my soul. (Tales was good too).
You could not have made me happier. I love the philosophy intertwined within the stories, especially in " the Farthest Shore". I am going to be tuning in for every post. I hope you broach the topic of the philosophical aspects as well but if it is just strictly lore I can appreciate that too, either way I am greatful for someone to do a deep dive like this on a book I have loved since 3rd grade.
I don't think this is a series of Earth Sea lore dives, but rather a series of individual fantasy setting dives, as he's already released single introductions into Middle Earth & Cosmere (though he called them breakdowns and presented slightly different) and Wheel of Time years ago.
Every fan of Earthsea MUST read the short stories.. they contain stories about the founding of Roke, and also continuation of stories of recurring characters
Just happened to find and read A Wizard of Earthsea when I saw this uploaded and waited until I finished it before watching this, so this vid was perfect timing for me :)
This is the first time I’ve seen a video like this on your channel. I love this. Though I find the pacing of the speech quite discomforting, had to put it in 1.25x speed. Great video nonetheless and will give it a read :)
Bro, I just picked up the first book because of your recommendation and halfway through it, purchased the omnibus edition!! So freakin good man! Thanks for mentioning this one!
Jesus Christ the algorithm punished the shit out of this video... never even saw that it was released and it only has 13k views... awesome production as always Daniel!!! 🔥
Read "The Wizard" in high school, kinda liked it, so I tried the entirety. Gotta say, it didn't grab me much, but then I gave it to my grandma as a birthday gift and she was enthralled :) One has to be in exactly right mental place to appreciate LeGuin's work fully, I think.
This was a fantastic series that I probably was too young to read when I did (I stole my brother's copies to do so, too), have really been meaning to go through them again partly because I remember liking the way magic worked in that world. Thanks for the refresher!
Roke being partly founded by a woman is an especially fascinating detail. I love how Ursula used the series as a vessel to explore her own growing feelings within feminism and feminist literature.
After watching this video I finally made the decision to buy the big beautiful red edition of the books of earth sea and I can’t wait to get through it!
It's interesting how the Earthsea Cycle subverts many of the problematic tropes of fantasy, including its own sexism which is established in the original trilogy. Instead of being focused on slaying dragons, dragons are often the solution to the problems caused by humans. Besides all that Ursula K. Le Guin writes some of the most brilliant and beautiful prose of all time.
The lore genuinely feels like a real-world creation myth. Also, fun fact: Le Guin's father was the anthropologist who employed and housed the man known as Ishi, the last member of the Yahi tribe and the last Native American to live free of Western civilisation.
Absolutely LOVE the books -- one of my gamertags has been SirGed for a LONG time. Absolutely ABHOR the travesty SyFy committed bastardizing the story for their TV adaptation. Avoid THAT thing like the plague! But DO go read the books!
Can you do some spoiler filled videos i know its not popular so im i apologize for asking I just feel we can have better discussions about tge materials without holding spoils

Extremely well done video. I will say however that the narrative voice isn’t my favorite. It’s missing a lot of the humor and character that make this channel special.
I really wished that Daniel would use better B-roll for the video :c it's just a bunch of random stuff instead of showing what he's saying... Love your videos man, just wanna see them as the best as they can be

Good bookshop links! And you had us at Le Guin!
Ah damn! I messed up the order of books in editing. It’s WoE, ToA, FS, Tehanu, THEN Other Wind. My bad!!!
I was going to unsubscribe, but I can respect a man who faces his mistakes.

A Wizard of Earthsea is my single favorite novel of all time 😁 Excellent video

8:32 "We watch as Ged makes the worst decisions in the magical world of Earthsea". I loved that line of yours. Excellent video.
I like that you used the Ghibli film to represent some of the places and characters! It may have been a bad adaptation writing wise, but the art is fantastic.
At least he never used any footage from the Scifi version where they whitewashed all the characters.

More Ursula Le Guin!! I would love a breakdown/review of the Hainish Cycle, Ursula’s Sci-Fi Series, as well!!
My aunt gave me all the earthsea books when I was maybe 10. She wanted me to get into books. Twas my first series and still with me 20 years later!
Great timing for this video! Just started the Left Hand of Darkness audio book and it’s glorious sci-fi.
My favorite audiobook ever! After Earthsea I consider The Left Hand of Darkness to be her best work
Thank you so much for all your hard work and giving authors and series their due love :)

For sure! She called the Tales from Earthsea the 5th book for a reason
@@ghostdreamer7272 it annoys me still, however, that the Ghibli studio used this title for their movie
Yooooooooo finally you are doing itttt. Earthsea is phenomenal.
Just happened to find and read A Wizard of Earthsea when I saw this uploaded and waited until I finished it before watching this, so this vid was perfect timing for me :)
So underrated. I wish this would get a good adaptation, so we’d get more people exposed to these books
Whoa I just started reading Earthsea. Good timing, Mr. Greene.
Probably 25-30 years since I read any Earthsea. Thanks for bringing me back.

I can't wait to see what other deep dives you do. Especially that Berserk one you've teased for so long.
Bro, I just picked up the first book because of your recommendation and halfway through it, purchased the omnibus edition!! So freakin good man! Thanks for mentioning this one!
I actually don't remember much of this series, just that I really liked book 2 and that books 4 and 5 ruined me emotionally for days when I was a kid
Oh, man, this last book...
It’s been ages since I read A Wizard of Earthsea, but I really enjoyed this video!
One of the first fantasy series I’ve read, I barely remember the overall story but I remember them being epic
Jesus Christ the algorithm punished the shit out of this video... never even saw that it was released and it only has 13k views... awesome production as always Daniel!!! 🔥

I’m reading the fourth book right now and am saving this video for when I finish all of them. Book one was an amazing read.

The whole naming thing reminds me of kingkiller Chronicles (which i love).
I think earthsea came before though.
Five books?! What happened to Tales From Earthsea? That's important, too! Book 6 doesn't make sense without it!
Oh, oops. This is why I don't usually comment until I'm done watching. >.
I wonder if Daniel has read her Scifi. Le Guin is my favorite Scifi Author.
So this series takes place on a "water world"?
At least the bit of the world where the story takes place in.

I read Earthsea before I read The Hobbit.
Extremely well done video. I will say however that the narrative voice isn’t my favorite. It’s missing a lot of the humor and character that make this channel special.
Erreth Akkab? AKKAB???
Did Skyrim just rip this world off?
Earthsea is a foundational work that inspired much of the modern tropes around magic
Elder Scrolls takes a lot of influence from all over the fantasy and scifi genres. And they aren't shy about it either, they like to add easter eggs.
Why does Daniel sound like he's taken serious downers
The backgrounds don't match the narration.
Greene + lore = Narrator voice mode activated. 👍
Zombie voice
ha
Did Daniel just wake up from a nap, or something? His....narration......seems.........un........naturally........slow.......and....plodding.
