I love your videos, whether long or short form🥰. You make houseplants and being a plant parent fun and informative🥳never change, you have a great sense of humor too! Planty hugs from Long Island NY. Hope your ficus bounces back🙏, I love self watering pots, they usually work well, whether pon or soil, but there’s a first time for everything.
My birthday is next week and everything on my wishlist this year is plant related, from new babies to pots and accessories, even have a trip to Ikea planned to make the greenhouse i saw on your channel. So thank you for being my inspiration to grow my already 30+ plant collection even further guilt free 😊❤
OMG, I wasn't able to finish this vid until now, recently my Peace Lily had quickly started to drop some leaves, checked water level, all good. Then the day after I watched this, I went out to my office and suddenly it had a ton of yellow leaves. I once again checked the water, all good >> but I thought of you and knew what the problem was - yep, the soil was bone dry!! I haven't fixed it yet, but immediately water it from the top. Thank you!!!
California Mama here too… it’s so cold! Also, Your Christmas tree is spectacular. I would leave that out too. 🤩 I love all your videos, long and short. You have the best sense of humor!
My plain green ficus HATES being watered and to my surprise, it is constantly throwing out new leaves! Everytime I even think about watering, I walk away...for like at least a month! Mine is almost 5 feet tall with like 30 leaves. Hope yours activates EVERYWHERE!!!
I absolutely love your plant videos. You always make me laugh after a long day at work and give me inspiration with my own plant journey. Because of you I actually bought cloning paste for my SOH as well. And after posting it online, people told me not to put it on more than a few nodes 😅 lil late guys lolol. Mines doing fine and i bet your tree will be looking amazing in no time! Cant wait for an update. Keep being your amazing self girl 💚🌱
HAHHAHA it is too late for the both of us. If the roots on your SOH are well established, it should be fine! I think you can also just wipe it off? LOL 🙈
I suggested cloning paste to another RUclipsr plant person, after your VSOH video, and someone jumped right in and said, "you can't use cloning paste on spent nodes!" The interwebs is sooooo helpful 🙄Thank you, person I wasn't directing my comment to. 😑🥴😵😆
The leaves on my ficus are starting to have yellow spots, not all only some. And I did lose leaves in the middle but is growing a lot of leaves from the top. I will try putting the cloning paste (on a few nodes at a time 😂) also I saw there was a bop comment. Mine is struggling and I have no idea why….I’ll have to go back and see which video that was. It’s my third one…this one has to survive!!! Thank you for the video, as always you’re amazing! And I hope your focus pulls through! 🤞🏼🤞🏼
Yep, same here. I have a much smaller one, but it has 1 and 1/2 leaves, lol! But for my others, I now do self watering in clear pots with 100% Perlite in the bottom and a syringe or other tube down thru from the top of the soil to the bottom, then add in soil & plant. And nothing between the perlite and soil. I water thru the syringe and the soil wicks up from the perlite as needed. It works great!!! I also put the clear pots in a cache pot, so the perlite doesn't get algae. Give it a try :)
Your videos just have the best vibe. 😊 I hadn't heard of the chopstick test for soil moisture before, and now I'm so excited to implement it, as my relationship with the moisture meter isn't one of complete trust. 😏
That is so amazing! I'm going to buy some. I have a succulent that needs this. Thanks for letting me know there was an update. I love watching your videos. You're so entertaining.
I suspected it was a similar issue that your bird of paradise had. It’s a nice self watering pot. I no longer struggle with root bound plants because I just use a rocky medium! 😊
I have to thank you so much for the Kieki paste tip - I did that with my string of pearls and it worked GREAT. Not only did each spot sprout a new leaf but it sprouted new branches. I can not believe how every single growth point is triggered. And PS - that's BS about the "plant energy thing"... I also did this on 2 different hoyas and there was no issue whatsoever. Nature will figure it out.
Nice video. Self watering pots - specifically the Earth Box, was a game changer for me. I don’t like growing in regular pots and want that sub irrigated pot. It uses the soil as a wick. Can’t overwater, can’t under water as long as there is water in the res. It’s like soil ponics and is magic 🪄 Earth Box is 15 gallons 💪
15 gallons! holy moly!!!! Yea self-watering set-ups get a lot of flack when people have been using them in the plant community for ages. I'm still a proponent of them, but this Ficus's roots were not hahaha
AWWW, I have to get this Cloning Paste (I hope I can get it here in Australia), I'm really looking forward to the next update. Lots of helpful information here - Thank you
The same thing happened to my money tree in that easyplant style self watering pot! I had to deconstruct the pot and just water like a regular plant to save it.
When I repotted an asparagus fern (I literally have a forest of them) recently I discovered the roots were all high up in the soil so it was never tapping into the reservoir. I changed to frequent light top watering and they are happy again. I hope Miss Ficus perks up and thrives because your back is going to hurt if you keep sleeping there.
lol is that a THERAMIN? What a saga it’s been with this ficus. It was the first time I knew about the light meter from your previous video. I really love your videos, the beginning of this was a good movie 🎥💗
Glad he’s doing better! All my plants from that particular company didn’t make it. In my case it was leaking water into the plant and they were all overwatered and their roots rotted. Their pots are super but need a little more engineering (or something)
Oh no LEAKING? That’s awful. I have about …hmmm…7 plants in my house in their pots that are good (I actually reused two pots for new plants I put in) and they’re fine so far. I just know now I need to still monitor soil moisture like any other plant.
I only really use self watering pots with a wick for my semi hydro 😢. Hope this plant is ok. I was going to ask if the soil was hydro phobic, but the wick not working? I’d probably would’ve got the rid of the roots right down the bottom. As they look very dry :(. Damn wick not working.
Once you had checked the roots and saw it was bone dry - would it not work to just give her some water in a pot for a few hours? I’ve done that with peace lilies and hydrangeas outside.
Because it’s a self watering pot, there’s no where for that water to drain away from. I decided to ultimately move it to a different pot with drainage since I didn’t have a larger self-watering setup.
Yeah you’d still have to take it out the self watering pot but I meant like once the soil was off it just use a bucket and plunge it into the water for a while, where I’ve done it before does help to revive them. My uncle who’s a gardener also says it helps to ensure they’ve had a good drink before replanting them again as when they’re in soil there’s lots of air bubbles etc. fingers crossed for the ficus 🤞🏻🤞🏻
I’ve seen people use it on monsteras and it activates a growth point (not aerial roots). If you do use it, I recommend just ONE node (and not a million like mine haha)
This has happened with all 3 of my altissimas! They freak out so easily, I hate watering b/ they immediately drop leaves. All three are currently bald!!
I do have one that’s connected to an app but I don’t find it the most accurate when the probe doesn’t match the soil depth. Chopsticks are tried and true haha
So it sounds like Ficus are the drama queens of the plant world lol. Honestly though, look at how much perkier the tree looks after the repotting, it still looks sad but so much better haha.
I bought from that same brand Easy Plant and majority of the plants in their pots died after a few months and all because of overwatering. Do not recommend.
Oh no. I have many in these pots for years without overwatering being an issue (in my ficus here, it was actually UNDERwatering because of it being rootbound, which would happen in any pot - self watering or not). Again, everyone’s environment is different, but when you have self-watering setups (Easyplant or not), I never keep the reservoir full at all times. I wait until the reservoir empties AND the soil dries out. The plants also need to be in bright light areas because is the soil is consistently moist, it needs more light to use up the water via photosynthesis.
The little suitcase with one sock was so funny 😂😂😂. I see, lots of unpacking to do! 😂😂.
SO MUCH LAUNDRY
IKR! 🤣🤣
This is exactly why I don't mess around with self-watering pots! They can't be trusted! 😒 I hope your tree bounces back!💚
Haha pros and cons! Thank you! She’s hanging onto her 5 leaves with her life.
self-watering is great, see my diy method in main thread
it has its benefits for some plants but not all :( this tree probably was just very root bound
Self watering pots are perfect for vines
I just found you..... I'm never leaving you. You are just the funniest teacher ever.

I’d probably would’ve got the rid of the roots right down the bottom. As they look very dry :(. Damn wick not working.
I shall live and learn (ficus is TBD) haha. The soil wasn’t hydrophobic, but the wick wasn’t touching any soil - JUST the root mass so it dried out.

Does that paste work on monstera nodes to create aerial roots?
