Basically, in the game you play as these characters to decide the fate of the bus driver, since these five characters represent his mental state. Depending on the decisions you take, the bus driver can leave his past behind or get overwhelmed by it, leading him to suicide. This is made quite clear as characters can die either by being killed by monsters from the past or if their negative traits remain untouched during your playthrough.

Haven't finished watching it but it seems like most of the characters died so, sounds like a happy ending.

So the hunters finger would not have had the infection. Shooting his finger off, if anything, just makes him more prone to infections now. And the gun shot draws attention (though I guess that part didn't seem to matter).
