He wrote the original version while in prison, a lot of people seem to think that his original angsty version was because he knew what he wanted to say (lyrics) but wasn't sure how to convey it (pop punk style), but now on this the lyrics seem to carry more weight because he's grown and matured and knows how to put his message across more effectively.

For Ronnie it is, but only for him as he was kicked out off his then band, Escape the Fate, when he was sent to prison and formed a new band, Falling in Reverse, while still in prison. So Falling in Reverse, the band, doesn't actually have a "pre-prison sound."
The song isn't about a relationship it's about his self reflection basically he's saying he's his own worst enemy and he does the most damage to him than anyone else

FiR is amazing in everything they do and Ronnie Radke is a man amongst himself. There isn't much they have done that i don't like, but this one is one of the best for me...it really hits you in the feels heavy.
The rapping in popular monster is barely rapping. Super monotonous and unemotional, don't get me wrong, it's on purpose to fit the depression narrative and it works absolutly brilliantly. But if you wanna see Ronnie actually rap. Any one song in the trilogy is a worthy choise. I'm 110% sure literally *Everyone* and their dog already namedropped those songs...
