Just because it comes from Amazon and it says it is pre set….doesn’t mean it’s set correct….I bought the same one you did and it was off….1.5%….check it with extra virgin olive oil on the Brix scale….
100% agree! I think I’m going to do a video on calibrating that.
Great tip. TY
Temperature of honey & refractometer should be nearly the same and wait 30 seconds before reading the instrument. Adjust the Brix to read 71,5 using the extra virgin olive oil. Moisture should be 18% maximum.
I ordered honey from your Etsy shop after you harvested the last batch. It was my first time to order and I am so glad I did. Your bees are not only sweet girls…..but they make the sweetest honey! It is absolutely delicious and I feel lucky to have gotten some. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for loving on my girls! It is such an honor to share a little of their sweetness with everyone 💛
Very interesting! I didn't even know that tool existed! I'm always learning something new from my favorite bee teacher! 🐝🐝🐝
💛💛💛
nice work
Great video as always when it involves the bees.We follow the same procedure, take frames when capped, leave them a super full for the winter. We don't have aa much wax on the top as you do but we keep that honey for us and not for sale. I know some beekeepers that use the wrap but I'm so conscious of how hard the bees work that I feel it's a waste throwing away that layer of wax and honey. We bought a refractometer this year as well, and it is interesting to find out the moisture content. Like you it's all about our bees.
When I'm working with honey, I'd put some hat on my head to protect some hair or dust from it dropping in my honey. Maybe it is just me.
Thank you very interesting.. God Bless Honey Girl.
I watch your videos love u & ur Momma!
I am a survivor of a shooting .. I can't go into entire story here lol
But basically I was shot with a tiny 22. It fragmented destroyed my left eye, o factor, and trigeminal nerve
I spent 13yrs visiting Dr's who "practice" medicine
They gave pharmaceuticals, did horrific procedures incl unnecessary surgeries... all did nothing but torture me and saddle me with multiple chemical addictions 😢
I had an epiphany a few years ago .. and am now pharma free, addiction free, and Dr's. .. rarely
I'm interested in visiting, purchasing, learning how to manage my condition with botanicals
Any info would be appreciated

Kept waiting for the camera to go plonk in the bucket 😄 Very good video👍
Lol
That's so cool
Very cool saran wrap trick
Right!?!?
How do you keep your homey from getting crystallized?
I just ordered one! Thanks
Great tool.
Kaylee is as delicious as the honey she creates, almost as beautiful as the blonde soft-spoken girl from Texas Beeworks.
Cool!
I enjoy fermenting honey. I love me some mead.

Filtering and using a sieve are two different things. I only use a sieve to remove wax and bees parts. The whitish scum that floats to the top is protein and edible.
Such a useful tool to have, i just let a friend borrow mine to test his. I think i have the same one. Like you said though, trust the Bees. It's capped, it's ready. Thanks for sharing Kaylee.
Definitely is pretty cool! I do trust the bees for sure!
@@TheHoneystead I like the idea to test uncapped and capped. Giving me ideas. . Haha
I think so too! I have a short video coming out on Thursday with me checking it.
I have a friend who told me, "Any honey can be fermented....but the Bees are not making Mead" I got my Etsy box from your store.... the honey is perfect. My tea has not tasted this good in a long time!
The girls outdid themselves for sure 💛🙌🍯
I’ve always had beetween 14 and 18% of moisture in the capped cell i have. I harvest exclusively fruit tree flower honey just before rape blooming. And i take half off the available quantity as well, just for me and my family.
I have one refractometer just to confirm but bees knows better than us when the honey his at is best. 👍🏻
Lol I love it!!!!! They definitely know better than us for sure!
It would be so terrible to drop the camera into the honey. 😬😬😅
Lol
Our harvest came out to 19% this year. I'm okay with that though as we will be consuming it before it has the chance to ferment :)
You can use a dropper. About 3 drops is enough. Let it set about 30 seconds before reading.
I’d just feed it back to the bees 🐝
Cool! I’d be interested in checking the nectar that isn’t capped but withstands the “shake test” (when you turn frame upside down and give a shake and it stays put. Some say it’s moisture level is fine🤷🏻♀️💛
I heard this recently too.
I have heard that as well!!
Hey, we use the same thing! We aim for 17.8% though. 20% seems high.
I agree!
Dadant sells a machine some of the commercial beekeepers use. To lower the moisture content in extracted honey, but it cost $20,000+.
Ouch that is painful!
If you have a dedicated room for the décantation of your honey, you can add an house air conditioner with a « dry » fonction and keep the température at 30 degrés celcius (86degres F) minimum et take a sample once a week.
Depending off the moisture content it can take 3 to 4 weeks to lose 3 to 4 %. That’s a trick i learned from the guy who teach me what i know about bee keeping.
But again bees knows better than us when the honey is ready. Once it’s capped it’s dry enough.
Great point! Thank you!!
What can be done about fermented honey?
Is it safe to give it back to the bees?
If you don't wanna wait for Amazon to deliver, you can find refractometers at nearly every home brewery store.
Good point
Do y'all ever have any kind of classes on bee keeping
We are doing a full day workshop for Homesteaders of America, but we are planning a few things for next year!
@@TheHoneystead great I'll watch for watch for any announcements
Greetings from Russia!
The amount of nerd ness in farming would shock anyone. We do dozens of trials tissue samples soil test and super detailed records of cover crops and days of livestock exposure. Even pig poop used and pollinators and invading species and benefit species per acre.
We’re organic tho so it’s all so important. My dad says good farming is hard work and also lots of data.
I can see the lights on his combine and I can hear the noises. He is telling us stories on the radio and I am crying but just a little bit cuz I want to be helping but it’s a school night. I help a couple hrs tho and he takes a nap.
My mom drives semis to the grain bins 2.
🔬 the nerd in me enjoys the science of farming for sure!!!!
FlowHive looks like that would be easier.
Hi. Where can I buy some honey from you?
How do you tell if the refractometer is calibrated already? Is that something you can do yourself after you receive it?
You can test it with distilled water or extra virgin olive oil and adjust it! I’m going to put together a video on it!
Do you sell honey? If so, where can I buy some?
What do I do with crystalized darkened honey 🤷🏻♀️ can I get it smooth & runny again for baking?
Just set it in a sunny window or warm water :)
@@TheHoneystead thanks, almost threw it out 🤦🏻♀️
The honey you sell online is raw like in your bucket or has it been filtered and heated? Seems really clear..
And if so do you sell unfiltered and heated honey?
Neat tool to have..
Have a good evening 🌻🌻🌻
Yep it is all the same honey. We do one strain in the beginning to collect the very big wax chunks, but once it’s in the bucket it’s in the bucket. Any particles or wax chunks float to the top and you can easily remove it with a Saran Wrap. We do not heat or honey as it is perfect the way it is and I do not do any extra fine filtering.
I just bought some and it is delicious in its raw natural state. I was amazed and now a firm believer that buying honey directly from a beekeeper is the only way to go.
@@leahjunkins988 that's what I used to do. But my local on retired from it😔 and its been hard to find good honey again. I didnt just order from a different one in my state🤞
So if it's too high do you warm it up to bring it down?
I’d make myself some Mead as it’s not going to keep.
Richard…..you can lower the moisture easy if it’s checked while it’s in the frames and it’s too much moisture….but once it is extracted it’s almost impossible….while it’s still in the frame honey can be lowered by dehumidifier and fan …takes a few hours but you can drop the moisture dramatically….
@@eddevault4604 My first harvest and just found out about using a Refractometer/dehumidifying on frames. I'm waiting for my meter to see if the little I have is good or not. Thanks!
@@TheHoneystead busy with working full time and the farm that I forgot to get a meter. Thanks for reminding me! Hopefully the little first harvest is not wasted. One on order 🤞
I do 100% agree with Ed. Now I have not experienced Harvesting a Honey that has been uncapped and too high but I have read a lot of success with what Ed has shared in regards to the fan and dehumidifier.
Should NEVER use a metal spoon..EVER...ALWAYS wooden
The spoon is stainless steel and you are actually talking about storing a metal spoon in honey, not a quick scoop. Honey is naturally acidic and can cause certain metals to corrode if a spoon is stored in it, stainless steel is not a reactive metal.
