Gulch was a heck of a horse. They turned him over to D. Wayne Lukas and he won the breeders cup sprint. These were two great 3 year olds….Gulch and Gone West….also two great sires. These were great horses back then.
I remember taping this race on my VCR. Capote just wasn't the same as a 3 year old. Only reason I was rooting for him was because Angel Cordero was on him that Day. I liked gone west But Gulch was such a Good horse that even in Defeat he was a hard knocker.. Much like Cryptoclearance, Gulch ran hard every race. So much so that Gulch won the Breeders Cup Sprint the Following Year As a 4 Year old With Angel on him and what' a race it was, much like this race.. This was When horse racing was still Truly Competitive From The Horses, to the Trainers And The Jockeys... Loved the finish of this race
poor Gulch couldn't keep a jockey...didn't seem to matter, he ran for anyone, but that no jockey would decide to particularly commit to him, was kinda insulting
Just 6 months earlier Capote laughed at Gulch as he ran away from him two times on the west coast...goes to show how much these horses are still growing and learning between 2 and 3.
if the BC had been at Aqueduct in 1986, instead of 1985, Gulch would've beaten him, as he was Mr. NY as a 2YO (and still loved it at 3 & 4, too)....and if not for the push then, to crown all BC winners as Eclipse champions, Gulch probably should've won that, too, as he was much more accomplished than Capote (though future Belmont Stakes winner, Bet Twice, was quite an accomplished juvenile, too)
@@lauranolastnamegiven3385 Hard to say...Gulch definitely ran his best over the NY tracks, but Jolley was trying to stretch him out for the longer races and Gulch would prove to never be as effective beyond a mile; though less seasoned, Capote beat one of the best Juvenile fields I've ever seen. As far as the Eclipse, Capote beat him twice and ended up with the same amount of Grade I victories, though you raise a good point at the weight that goes on the BC victory - thankfully, voters got it right with Forty Niner, who didn't run, and Easy Goer, who couldn't beat the same Is It True in the mud that it beat multiple times on a dry track. And Capote would never win another race!
back when it was only 2 weeks before the Derby, causing people to feel there was a 'curse' against any horse winning the Wood Memorial, that they couldn't then win the Derby, when, frankly, it was probably just a timing thing

I watched this via simulcast at Pimlico. These were two excellent horses who were to make their mark on the breed as stallions.
Leroy Jolley is a true gentleman horseman, always respectful and complimentary. I love when he gets hold of a good horse.

Gulch was a great little horse.

@@penelopelopez8296 and adorable, but I'm biased, he's my ❤ horse

Yes, Capote was a great 2 year old….just like Devil’s Bag and Chief’s Crown. All three were amazing at two but didn’t really shine at three.
