Did someone else had trouble with the simple deformation modifier? For some reason mine looks like hourglass instead of a cone in the same parameters, why is this?

I'm a bit late but, make sure your object is at the center of the world. Select the object, right click -- set origin -- origin to geometry. And then afterwards; select the object again, press ''N'' to open the transform menu and make sure the location are all set to 0 except for the vertical axis. This worked for me.
