Interesting thought: I suspect that you're right about this. I was in my teens / early twenties during the eighties and loved many records that are seen as perhaps a bit 'naff' nowadays... There are some absolute classics from this era.
@@DaveDenyer Hi Dave, the only thing i did notice is that the first 2 tracks sound good but by the 3rd track the sound seems to open up quite a lot and from there on in the album sounds incredible. Did you notice that? Could be me as got a new Cartridge and it is still breaking in. I also noticed my pressing had a blue like sheen to it similar to what happens with old PVC sleeves de-gassing onto the vinyl - not sure why that occurred and a slight warp on disc 1. I have an Orb flat but was this one of the vinyl formulations you have tried to fix or was it the mofi vinyl that you said was a no-no? Anyway what a brilliant album - you know back in 1987 The Rolling Stones would have killed for an album as good as this!
@@ordersredrawwear Hi Ross, I certainly didn't notice this on my copy but haven't gone back to it to check. If there's a sheen I'd suspect it is some sort of manufacturing residue. I have had this on one or two QRP records, (as well as plenty pressed elsewhere). I always clean records when I get them, new or old, the new ones get cleaned precisely to remove any residue such as what this MAY possible be. If it is a pressing residue then that might well result in slightly veiled / murky sound compared with when scrupulously clean. As far as flattening goes, I have not had an issue with Atlantic 75s. The ONLY records I have had problems with in this regard are MOFI Supervinyl and Impex OneSteps (I suspect they are the same formula).
This Australian is smiling ear to ear to finally have picked this up! And it’s about time some Aussie music is released in this quality!! I’m endlessly frustrated that our music gets rereleased digitally remastered, and so many great artists are just unknown abroad.. Some other Aussie acts I’d love to see get the AAA audiophile treatment are Icehouse, Cold Chisel, Little River Band, Daddy Cool, Men at Work, Split Enz/Crowded House, Divinyls/Chrissy Amphlet, Bee Gees, Midnight Oil, and that 4 letter rock band everyone knows.. maybe even some Mondo Rock or Hunter & Collectors, Australian Crawl? I’m not sure if they were recorded to tape or digitally but I would add Powderfinger to the list. Shabooh Shoobah and The Swing are the other two INXS records I consider must haves.. To Look At You, Don’t Change, Original Sin and Burn for You are all killer. Anyways, love your passionate review for this wonderful recording, it’s hyped my up to spin my copy!
I couldn't afford the subscription, sadly, and there are some (probably no more than half of them) that I'm not bothered about. I do agree though, this is the probably best reissue series that I've ever come across.
This is THE Atlantic 75 release I’ve been waiting for, had it on pre order since the list was first announced. I’ve got an Abbey Road half speed but this one is just going to utterly destroy it. It’s again one of those bands that i took for granted at the time and it’s only been more recently I’ve really appreciated their genius and a band that recognised the genius of the saxophone without making it cheesy. What an album! The Atlantic 75 just don’t seem to miss, they’ve all been spectacular. Ryan K Smith, Kevin Gray and Chris Bellman just always shoot bullseyes.
TBH I've not heard the Abbey Road cut, but have not been at all impressed with their Half-Speed Mastering process (to put it politely). I do agree: I think this was probably the one I was looking forward to most, even above the Yes and Genesis. It's staggering. I'm even tempted to order another copy as back up.
@@DaveDenyer I’m not a fan of the abbey roads either, I bought a few when I was first getting into collecting as was swayed by them being abbey road and the marketing, but found them all a little lifeless. A backup copy of this is a very good idea actually, may put through an order now!
@@DaveDenyer I've been a big fan of Miles' own mastering work. What a lot of people don't know about the Abbey Road Half Speed series is that a lot of the records are only cut by Miles. A lot of labels give him masters already made and ask him to just cut them. When Miles actually does the mastering himself, the results sound fantastic. It's definitely a shame how the labels are ruining his image... Miles was forced to do the Rolling Stones stuff from brickwall limited CD masters..
@@SmallPersonRoo As I understand it "half speed mastering" is a bit of a misnomer. It really means half speed cutting. Which is something I'm not totally convinced actually provides a benefit... My feelings are purely derived from personal experience. I have several 'Abbey Road' cuts that I simply don't like. The recent (last year?) Sade box set for instance... I see the individual albums are coming out at the moment so I could do a video on those. It would be highly negative. I have the originals of most of them so really only bought the box for the later albums. However the albums of which I also have originals: I much prefer the originals, in fact I would MUCH rather listen to the CDs than the new cuts. In my personal opinion they are horrible. Flat, dull, losing all of the life and spirit of the originals. I very recently bought the new cut of Duran Duran's Rio as it's an album I enjoy and wanted to know what the new version sounds like: similar to the Sade, completely flat, grey and without any of the life of the originals... I could go on and on, and I keep buying new releases, ever hopeful that they'll improve upon the originals (and of course sometimes they do). But it has to be said, from my experience most of what's coming out of Abbey Road, whether cut / mastered by Miles or someone else, is (to my ears) pretty awful.
Thanks Dave, another one to add to the list then. Having to prioritise some of these releases now due to how many I want. Will definitely get this at some point but going for the classic 70s rock/prog releases first, especially with the Katy Lied UHQR promised by the end of summer.
I too am _really_ looking forward to Katy Lied, but I heard that might be last, behind The Royal Scam, oddly enough... Don't know if that's 100% true, but we'll see I suppose. You just never with AP. 🤞😬🤞
@@R3TR0R4V3 On the Acoustic Sounds RUclips video 5 days ago, when the 2 new Bill Evans UHQRs were announced by Chad, he said that Katy Lied UHQR should be out by the end of August & Royal Scam by the end of the year.
I do know what you mean but I think I'd keep this one over any of the other Atlantic 75s, and to be honest, even over any of the UHQRs. It's music I want to play, and want to play loud and get utterly swept away.
@@DaveDenyer That’s the beauty of this great hobby of ours Dave - we all prefer different things and it would be so boring if we didn’t. Luckily for me Jazz is not my bag so I can rule those titles out straight away. I did see Inxs on the Kick tour and they were brilliant, Hutchence was one of the best front men I have ever seen, but I do prefer the two albums which came before Kick. I just placed my order from Acoustic Sounds! After hearing your review, I can't wait to receive my copy on Saturday! Looking forward to spin it on my ClearAudio Performance DC air Turntable with the ClearAudio Charisma Cartridge through my Focal Kanta 2. I also received the Johnny Cash Folsom Prison MOFI as well! It's sounds wonderful!
@DaveDenyer I sure did! It's everything that you have mentioned in the video, excellent pressing, punchy tight bass response, and the vocals are airy! Such a fun album to spin!
It’s always wonderful when music moves us to the points you mentioned, what a feeling! I own the 2017 European version that’s plagued with sibilance issues but sounds like this Analogue Productions version has eliminated that, and sound quality is much improved. Can’t wait to get my hands on a copy. Thank you for your review.
Awesome Australian band. They play “Never Tear Us Apart” before Port Adelaide games (Australian Rules Football) - worth looking up. At the game it sends shivers down your spine and then the siren blows and then the umpire bounces the ball and the game begins.
My AP LP arrived yesterday. I cleaned it this morning. Played it tonight, and it does sound incredible. However, when I compared it to my Miles Showell half speed 45rpm cut, the Abbey Road won out. Much more detail, separation, and low end. The music just pops out on the Miles cut.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Michael. I may try and find a Miles Showell cut but generally speaking I don’t like the sound of Abbey Road Half Speed Mastering. Of course as ever this is subjective.
I started a small & select Import CD Collection. I want to add a Reissue of this INXS Kick album. Does anyone have a favorite sounding Import Reissue pressing of this album they can recommend?? Thanks!
Thanks for presenting this interesting & informative video. Do you or your viewers have any idea about how a Universal Records UK Remastered edition of Kick sounds? ...How is the audio quality?
Glad you found the video interesting David. If you mean the 'Abbey Road Half Speed Mastered' version, to be honest I've not heard it, but typically I avoid anything 'Abbey Road Half Speed'. I haven't yet heard one I like the sound of.
Really interesting review Dave, I'm not familiar with this album. Your comments about the sound are really interesting. I have bought copies of Stevie Ray Vaughan over the years and the sound has always been bright / hot / in your face and fatiguing. I bought the 33rpm box set by AP, mastered by Ryan and it is a total revelation. It is what you are saying, the sound is balanced, powerful, musical and draws you in to the music. The guy is a phenomenal mastering engineer.
Time and time again, Ryan's work blows me away, and when he's interviewed he always seems most humble, but excited and grateful for being in his position. Top, top man!
I'd like to see the waveforms of the original album vs this new version? From your description, it doesn't sound good if the HF has been cut in several places and the gain turned up for the bass. If so this is no longer the original intended album. It would also be a shame if this is also brick-walled!
Hi Dave & Thanks for your quick reply to my comment. I was referring to the UK CD pressing of INXS Kick record. I'm looking for another release of this CD that is better than the original US release but less expensive than the Analog Productions release that you're reviewing here. Perhaps a Japanese Import Remastered CD edition will sound fine. Thise cost around $30.00 used here in the US. Any further thoughts on this? Thanks!
Hi Dave, where are you sourcing your Atlantic 75's? I know you mentioned a local record shop before, or are your shipping from US? (I'm travelling back to UK so thinking of stocking up if I can find them).
Hi, since the launch of this Atlantic 75 series I've mostly been buying them direct from Acoustic Sounds as there are so many I want, and I don't want to miss out or wait an extra month or so for them to come in via distributors. However I do buy some from vinyladventure.com. Regular, non-audiophile records I typically buy from my local bricks 'n' mortar store: Raves From The Grave.
Thanks for the feedback. I would like to get better sound but have not yet found a microphone solution I can work with. Suggestions are always welcome.
