Woody, just wanted to let you know your no BS approach here clicked wonderfully with me. You gave me the pointers to start jamming along, and having a blast while learning - of all things - on a Yamaha PSS11. Thanks again!
Pleasant to watch a great content creator who stays on point without ad nauseum attempts of comical segues. And you always make good sense that's truly helpful.
Woody, you're not only a great performer but also a great teacher as well. Keeping improv mostly confined to the notes of the scale of the key signature, in any order you want, will usually sound good, with the occasional non-diatonic note. This recalls for me perhaps the simplest yet memorable piano part in all of pop music, "The Captain of Her Heart" by Double.
🎉 Really good sound in an affordable keyboard, I think it can only be a hit. I love your videos, they give a good impression of how the different synths you test sound and how they are in use 😊
I just purchased this keyboard (same color too) as a backup keyboard to throw into the car just in case something were to go wrong with my main board. I am shocked at the level of sophistication from the Go Keys 3. The Zen Core sound engine is amazing and the keyboard is also quite playable. I'm a hardcore pianist and prefer a real piano action but the semi-weighted full size textured keys on the Go Keys are a pleasure to play. Plus, I discovered that I can use the Go Keys 3 as a controller for Logic Pro for iPad with just a USB-C sync cable. The Go Keys has a built in audio/MIDI interface that works great. I don't think you can find a more professional keyboard for the money than the Go Keys 3 or 5.
I own a Casio Privia 3100 and it is insane how packed with features it is for all this stuff with over 700 instruments and full DSP effects etc to complete change every aspect of the sound. Crazy that it costs so little for what you get and feels and looks absolutely solid.
Excellent demo Woody, I find myself trying to follow you on my Roland XP-50 with the SR - JV 80 - 02 piano card, cheers from Port Waikato and thankyou for your time and effort to do this for everyone on your channel.
Great video. Lots of good tips. Not wearing out the listener with super long runs is something that has taken me years to appreciate (prob cuz i rarely have an audience 😂). It turns out improvising is actually easier when you break up phrases. You mentioned it is a good idea to repeat particularly good licks. It is also very effective to reprise those especially good licks later in a song. I find that makes the thing more memorable, kinda plants the ear worm!
yeah, i will make that video soon but might take a while to publish... there aren't too many differences, there are some good articles online you can check in the meantime
As advanced beginner it's a pleasure to get out of a minor moody with your sunny ideas Woody. Cool and inspiring 😅 every count counts indeed. Love live instructions.👍🎵🤸💃🙏 Groovy days and year from here too ❤
A simple lesson......for simple people like me........have many keyboards........just waiting for some talent to arrive......its taking its time.....🤔......😁
Cool! please do more impro lessons like this. maybe with chords on the left hand... how to tell which chords belong to the scale? how to use the notes on that scale?
Thanks! I am mainly a guitar player but these tips are really useful! Are you planning to look into the GO_KEYS 5? I am looking into getting a keyboard to improve my playing skills and compose simple songs…
Woody, it would be nice if you could make these kind of videos improvising on the organ or synth. Jazz improvisation is usually taught on the piano - there are very few options for those interested in learning jazz on (hammond) organ or synth. Thank you, Michael Ps. I have CK61 with a pedal board and Roland Juno-D 7 plus lots of organ and synth VSTs. After playing mostly on piano (including Yamaha C7) I want a change 😊
you have a great rig there michael, very nice! i am not much of a specialist on organ or synth improv, although both require some special techniques, i would say 90% of the musical knowledge learned on piano carries over...? so you are in good shape!
@ Woody, as you said, piano is a percussive instrument - organ is not! The technique of playing is different and also the pedalboard is used. The expression is achieved by the use of swell pedal. The sound is closer to flutes and other wind instruments than to piano. I thought that you focus on organs and synths 😊
Hello, my dad changed the battery on his roland d50 and it asked me to load the sounds back into it since it suddenly stopped. I followed your tutorial (8 yes old lol) and everything worked but when I played the sounds they sounded corrupted and had major latency any idea how to fix?
that's a weird phenomena, never heard of that happening, try again, with different midi interface if possible. poor quality interface and drivers is often the issue.
It’s not a wrong note. It’s jazz! Kidding aside, all good tips and it actually doubles as a simple way to play outside without it sounding like a train wreck. Some of those tension notes can sound delightfully spicy.
It (an arranger) should also have a mode where you can press 1 or 2 keys with your left hand and it determines the root of the chord and what kind of chord is “compatible” with the 2nd note you hold (major, minor, seventh, suspended, etc). E.g. just press C and get a C major chord/pattern, press A and C and get A minor, press F and G to get G7…. Ok, the last example might be off about G7, but poke at it and see.
@@Roboprogs I already know that , but thanks , the author from the video does not know either obviously, very bad explanation "it is just preprogrammed chord progression" does not explain HOW to do it, does not show HOW, which button to press and so on, ..thanks anyway
I always appreciate the pure joy you bring to every video! Thanks Woody!
Fantastic suggestions! Inspiration for everyone.
I have just purchased it thanks to your video.
congrats and enjoy!

thanks for the message and kind words, cool thanks! yeah you can jam along on anything!
Great advice! That tip of waiting the same number of beats before playing again, I’ll apply it myself.
Woody, I absolutely LOVE this post. I learned a lot. Thank you!
happy to hear that, cheers!
I give always a thumbs up, pure Joy to watch

Brilliant! I really need that Roland. Such good value.
Got me the KEYS 5 for XMAS, sounds so good almost happy I waited this long! Great jam video, keep them coming!
happy for you, enjoy!
A useful and inspiring tutorial for beginners -- great work Woody! 👍
love your channel Woody!
super helpful tips
Cool improvisations 👍🤩👏
Thank you for this video. I'm forwarding it on to a family member who just got a Go:Keys 3 for Christmas. I'm sure she will be interested (and like).
that's a great plan!
Thanks Woody. Really interesting to hear those examples of what (not) to do.

great piano line indeed, love that tune!
Another cool, laid back vid. My playing has improved loads just by watching you play. Keep 'em coming, Woody 😁
love to hear that!
Nice tips!! 👍👍👍👍👍
Sometimes you have to listen to the wrong notes while improvising to tell which are the right ones.
That's solid advice, I guilty of that mistake quite frequently ;-)
Have a good new year!

that's a brilliant use-case, as a backup for the gig to get you by in case of disaster! agree on all your points, cool!

jamd to it! super video!

thanks, yeah, i need to take a pause to think about what to play next!
Thank you Woody, another synth I need to add to my to buy list now 😂 (though I can’t wait to see what differences you find between the 3 and 5)

haha, once i figure that out i can make a video ;)
Great 😊👍

hi, actually unboxed the 5 this morning, so should get something out in a week or 3. thanks!

Hey how did you know what I do lol😂. It's amazing how professional your channel has become.I remember watch when you began we been on journey.
we sure have, thanks for sticking with us!

It's impressive how modern the accompaniment is. Usually, arranger keyboards have accompaniments that sound dated and a bit silly.
this has those too, but a good proportion of fresh styles
It’s not a wrong note. It’s jazz! Kidding aside, all good tips and it actually doubles as a simple way to play outside without it sounding like a train wreck. Some of those tension notes can sound delightfully spicy.
don't understand how the arranger choose the chords, please explain
it is just preprogrammed chord progression
It (an arranger) should also have a mode where you can press 1 or 2 keys with your left hand and it determines the root of the chord and what kind of chord is “compatible” with the 2nd note you hold (major, minor, seventh, suspended, etc).

So, Woody, we (anybody) don't need nothing morę ;) to create :)
Soon you’ll be able to sit in front of the keyboard, wave your hands in the air, and let the AI play for you…
That ship has sailed my friend.. No human is needed
Lol they were saying that in 1979. You just push a button and Cars comes out.
Your bubbly attitude is not really good for my introvert and shy behavior. But I'm not sure what to do about it...
