  • Action starts with Brazilian Professional Big Wave Surfer Marcelo Luna charging into a huge wave in Nazaré, Portugal, during the infamous session of November 8, 2017, a day otherwise known as “The Big Wednesday”. After successfully riding the huge wave, Marcelo is unable to grab the sled of the Jet Ski and misses his only chance of avoiding every surfer's worst nightmare, getting pounded by a direct hit in Nazaré.
    This is the same Big Wave session that awarded Rodrigo Koxa with the new Guiness World Record for Biggest Wave ever surfed, and the very same session where Andrew Cotton suffered a severe back injury in Praia do Norte. This sequence with Marcelo Luna took place during early morning, at the very beginning of this historic session.
    In this episode of “Nazaré Dispatch”, Marcelo Luna gives his first person testimony to the filmmakers, the local Drone Team “Máquina Voadora” about what happened and what is like to surf and get pounded in the world's most feared wave: Nazaré. His friend, the Italian Big Wave Surfer Alessandro Marcianó, which was Marcelo’s team mate during that session also describes the sequence, giving the audience a rare insight of what happens during a Big Wave Session in Nazaré when things go wrong.
    “I realised that I almost died”, Marcelo told the filmmakers in an interview, “one more wave, maybe, and I think I would be knocked out. It was hardcore... it was the worst situation I’ve ever experienced in Nazaré, I’m blessed to be alive” he added.
    Marcelo Luna is chasing Giant Waves in Nazaré since 2016, being one of the most active Big Wave Surfers operating in the area, with several WSL Big Wave Awards entries under his name, he is a regular presence when conditions go ballistic in Praia do Norte.
    Praia do Norte beach, near the fishing village of Nazaré, has become famous worldwide for huge waves in 2011, when Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara set a world-record for the largest wave ever surfed: 24 meters (78-foot).

    You have the best YT channel about big wave surfing. Loved this mix between drone, Gopro and interview.

    I've watched the breaks from the lighthouse and these waves are even bigger than imaginable in person. Absolutely insane that some hear the call to actually ride them. Respect!

    The jetski is key best that he drove off because no way they would have gotten away with any extra weight another 200 lbs on that ride and rig with and the drag would have slowed them down and they both get eaten and that jetski is in there with them. Very lucky for both of them they are alive. Nazarre is Awesome surfing.

    Nas imagens parece que o Marcelo estava mais preocupado com a prancha do que em apanhar a boleia vital do jetski. :-(

    Driver of the ski made a mistake by not being aware of the wave coming and pulling up to the surfer in the water too fast and not stopping to allow a grab on instead ski driver assumed they had enough time to use the rope.

    What the hell was the jet skier doing immediately after towing that dude in??? The Jet skier completely fucked him on that. The skier new and saw the sets rolling in immediately after towing him in. From that point he should of known to chase his buddy down and be ready to pick him up way ahead of time. But since he lagged so hard it was too late.

      Depends on the wave... anything bigger than 6ft will kinda hurt (multiple tons of fast water), this one was maybe 30ft and it was a direct hit 🤔💣💥

      1 cubic meter of water weighs 1 ton.... look what this little wave did... ruclips.net/video/EW1iczrFShE/видео.html

      A cubic ft of water can weigh 70 lbs, it really is hard to explain the power behind this unless you spent significant time in the ocean!

    I'm just going to start an argument here in that any one of a thousands of amateurs could surf these waves when you are being towed in. I think the excitement took a nose dive after the first jetski towed in the first professional surfer. The hardest part for me would be getting up on the board behind the waverunner.

    • @lip171
      @lip171 5 лет назад

      goofyfoot2001 I completely agree, out of all the waves in the world, this would have to be one of the easiest one's, or the one that takes the least skill to surf because it's basically just a peak with no real shoulder.
      The challenge however, comes from once you lick out of the wave (or peak) and one of the many other shifty peaks is going to land right on you. That's when a professional jetski driver comes into play, to get him out of that life-threatening situation.
