i saw this film a few nights ago and it shook me up. I am fairly confident it will not leave my head anytime soon. The final scene was just phenomenal, but i don't think the rabbits are a reminder of abigail's fake love? to me, it seemed a reminder that abigail is a cheap replacement of sarah just like the rabbits were a worse version of Anne's lost children, and Abigail is now under the heel of anne just as the bunny was under her own heel earlier (and that's physically represented by Anne grabbing Abigail's head). The rabbits definitely serve as a catalyst of realization like you said and the beginning of putrid stagnancy between them. i can't wait till its wide release so i can go and see it again. This was a phenomenal film and i am glad that you made this video about it because to be honest, i'm still reeling from it. luv you, yorgos.
I agree. Everything in the favourite is masterful. I hope that when the golden globe nominations are announced next week the favourite is in many category as possible. But my greatest wish upon a star is that Olivia Colman shall win her very first academy award.
I do wish that he talked about the Abigail stepping on the rabbit, because I haven't really seen anyone address it yet. I think it has more importance and meaning towards the scene than any other part.
This is a great analysis for the last scene and the most logical for me. Love this movie. So amazing!
I share your enthusiasm!! I just watched it myself last night. I've never seen anything by this director, but he is clearly a visionary of the highest magnitude.
This film was a work of art. I've only seen Emma Stone in Cruella and was very interested in how she would handle something with this kind of emotional depth... and she knocked it out of the park.
That's a lot of beverage containers you've got there
he's a heavy drinker it's very worrying
ahahahahaha
I'm really glad to see Olivia Coleman get some recognition outside of her TV work. I've loved her for a long time :)
I don’t know how I forgot to mention my prediction that this will win Best Screenplay
oh definitely- screenplay masterpiece- could write a whole paper on this screenplay. genius.
Hope so!
It should have been like that but it was robbed by Green Book 😑
IT SHOULD HAVE!
Hey! Could someone please tell me a platform where I can see this online, cause I can't find it anywhere online.
Love this movie. No way Nicholas Hoult will get nominated though. The male characters are so peripheral and pointless by design. The three ladies will be nominated for lead, supporting, and supporting, and (hopefully) Queen Olivia Coleman will win.
Also, have you seen Dogtooth? I personally think it's Lanthimos' best film
Damn, you were 100% right.
The screenplay was sick, I don’t know how it didnt win last night. It is not like oscars matter, but damn, how can that be possible. Also Emma was snubbed, at least she has her la la land oscar but this was “the” performance, this was the Oscar. Olivia deserved her Oscar for best actress (Yalitza, you won in my heart.)
I was pissed that 80% of the best jokes/moments are spoiled in the trailer
Charlie_Willie Apart from the kitchen lady telling them to whip Abigail in the barn LOL but agree yes
and that is why I never watch more than half of any trailer, ever.
You're so handsome
No lies.
Whoaoioa I just noticed
You're my absolute favorite youtube movie critic right now, love your stuff man!
The guy Rachel is dancing with in the scene you were talking about is Joe Alwyn!
Every moment was incredible. Peter Greenway and Stanley Kubrick made a wickedly cynical baby and named it "The Favourite". Loved it.
Congratulations to a well-deserved Golden Globe win for Olivia Colman. Now, lets get some hardware for Yorgos Lanthimos too!
This dude can seriously make a movie. Cant wait to see it! Did you watch Maniac? Love your stuff man!
Thank you so much for explaining your take on the ending! Saw this at the New York Film Festival (at the 9:30 showing) and was blown away by the performances and writing! When I saw the ending, I was a little confused, but had a feeling it had something to do with the awkwardness between Abigail's and Queen Anne's relationship. If anything, I knew Abigail had lost. Was nice to hear someone else clarify their take on it. This movie was so great! I hope all three of the lead actresses get Oscar noms for it! Can't wait to see it again in theaters! :D
Watched the other day. Didn't watch the trailer or anything just heard it was good n I knew the actors. Was not expecting it to be so hilarious the whole audience was cracking up at every bit and joke Olivia Coleman iconic as always
Now I really want to see it! Awesome review, as always!
I felt sooo bad for the Queen. Everyone around her is viscous. She was the only redeemable character, I found.
Fantab review as always, man :) I tagged along with my parents to see this film a few days ago and honestly, I can't stop thinking about it. I'm not a film junkie, nor am I particularly well versed in film critique (aside from high school English) but this film was phenomenal (I don't think my parents really understood or fully appreciated it though, lol). Not only was it a joy to watch, both visually and in terms of plot and writing, but it's almost more fun to think about thematically and in hindsight. As you said, this story, the characters and their dynamics are so amazingly complex and dense that it's easy to just ponder different theories and facets of them for hours on end. I really hope this film receives the acclaim it deserves in the upcoming awards season.
Sarah and John Churchill went to the continent, where John was a huge war hero. They were the guests at many royal and noble courts, including that of George, Elector of Hanover. After Ann's death, George was crowned king of Great Britain. Sarah and John were given back all of their properties and honors and were very influential again. Abigail retired to one of her estates and basically disappeared. Sarah lived to the ripe old age of 84.
I had to Google "idiocyncratic".
What a thoughtful breakdown of a wonderful film, subbed with pleasure.
Great review. I couldn't agree more.
Just finished watching the movie. I was expecting a clearer conclusion to the plot, however, felt like the ending scene really did tell us all we need to know about where all these characters are at.
I wonder how many of the events are loyal to real historic events...
Excellent film. It took me several minutes to understand the ending. Abigail stepping on the rabbit, despite her achieving everything she wanted, was a sign that she was still not happy. The queen was also not happy, but they were now stuck with each other.
Great review. I was really enjoying this movie as I watched it, but when I finished it I was just left with a feeling of "huh well that was something I watched". And the search for a truly great 2018 movie continues......
My take on the final fade; the multiplying rabbits (as rabbits are wont do,) signified Anne's and Abigail's multiplying miseries (as miseries are often wont to do as well).
you can't wrap your mind around it because sometimes good writers come out of nowhere and you stumble upon them and then they blossom- nobodies lol damn you should go watch that show- people gotta start somewhere. you think that was their first script ever written? hell nah- they probably got their script bough by film companies but they never got made- that writer probably has dozens or at least a handful of scripts bought and just sitting in a room waiting to be made- well the director found it and wanted to make it. you don't need to have a bunch of movies made to be a good writer- you just need someone to finally recognize your talent- so many people make shit movies because of connections and nepotism-
💖💖
I enjoy your videos so much
This is one of the few films I saw this year and one of the few films ever to really have this haunting effect on me. I was perplexed by the ending but not in a bad way. I feel as though opposite as this film could've been 3 hours and still would be smiling with glee, wide eyed open as I was for the entire runtime. I'm currently working on a review for this myself and not sure what rating to give it, I want to give it some time and another watch because their are aspects of it I want to revisit and I digest, particularly in the last half of the 2nd act and 3rd act. Really enjoyed your review and thoughts!
Oh god thank you for explaining that ending shot because I couldn't help but be really uncomfortable and confused, I had the same reaction as you when it ended even if I thoroughly enjoyed the film. I thought it was one of the funniest films of the year, the dry humour and the ridiculousness of some situations I think were just hilarious.
Have you read the IndieWire article about Lanthimos' strange audition practices? If not, you should read it. Certainly fits in with his personality.
Just, yes. Thanks for the review. Spot on. (Except that I really liked the dark shots. But hey. ) I dislike period pieces. I was encouraged to see the favourite by friends. In the event, I was gobsmacked. It's a while since I've seen such a piece of perfectly realised film making.
aaaah! ever since the first trailer i've been so excited!
OMG i'm so jealous you saw it where you saw it. Also, you're so attractive
This movie is everything I needed this year. Olivia Coleman deserves that oscar
Eagerly awaiting Lanthimos' next film. The Favourite is my film of the year.
I got really excited to go see this movie now, only to find out it's not premiering in my country until 2019...
you have to watch Yorgos Lanthimos breakthrough film Dogtooth . I still can't get used to writting his first name in English , he could have changed it to the english form "George".
Roula Fili just that wouldn’t be his name
Just saw this last night at my local cinema. Awesome twists and turns. Good political commentary too!! I loved the ducks more than the rabbits lol
Stephen Harrison Those were geese
SPOILERS
For me that last scene was a strong reminder that at the end of the day it’s the Queen who has the final say. Doesn’t matter how far Abigail has come, she is still under the sovereign.
But can also be read as : with such power, how can you ever expect genuine love from someone, you know deep down that they probably just want something from you, therefore power inherently breeds loneliness and a lack of love. The queen realised Abigail just wanted to be close to her to have power, and Sarah - though genuinely loving the queen- still used her selfishly to advance her political interests
Just came back from seeing this and it was great. It was the first time seeing Olivia Colman on the big screen. The last time I saw her in anything was the BBC dark comedy "Flowers" acting opposite Julian Barratt of Mighty Boosh fame.
Best review so far.... just watched it yesterday. I knew it's going to be good but didn't expected to be one of the movie of the decade. I'm not a big fan of the lobster and the Killing of... but Y.L. just proved me with this one his one of the best nowadays. I will follow his works now just like Cianfrance, Refn, Chazelle, or P.T.A. It's a shame didn't win cinematography director, or best picture today. tells everything about oscars...... mentioning Kubrick, for me this is Barry Lyndon on steroids, and LSD. AWESOME movie HISTORY.
when talking about protagonist it isn't about "good or bad" you can have an anti hero as the protagonist- the protagonist is the character that goes through the most change and whose journey we follow so I would say Abigail is the protagonist because she starts off all innocent and quickly spirals- she is the catalyst to the movie- she is the one going on a journey without her this movie wouldn't happen- like Luke in Star Wars- Sarah is what would be known as the antagonist because she directly opposes Abigail and gets in the way of what she wants- to be free and have status- yet Abigail didn't get what she desired in the end because she is still held under Annes command. the more I look at this the more I realize it is a screenplay masterpiece.
A very astute review of a great film!
This movie blew me away and definitely solidified Yorgos Lanthimos as one of my favourite filmmakers ever.
One omission: Lanthimos also worked on the script. That's why it's great.
Abigail was trying to take her power after all what she’s been through, but in the end she stays powerless even after she becomes a lady. Probably she’ll never become free or happy again
That’s a perfect representation of how lack of love and a lot of pain can make your darkest sides grow into a big black hole hurting everyone including yourself
The Favourite. Watched it. Loved it.
A fine review of a great film. (Yes I said film.)
Thanks for your work.
Can't wait to see The Favourite in Germany, I have been dreaming about this movie for a few months. I think Glen Close will win best actress for The Wife, though. And Roma the best film. But The favourite will more likely win for original script.
I saw this this week as it only just came out in the UK. Absolutely loved it, but the slow pacing towards the end was a big problem for me. I rate it higher than Killing of a Sacred Deer, but lower that The Lobster and Dogtooth.
YEEEES
It really is! Ridiculous that it only won ONE of its nominations- at the very least Rachel Weisz should have won supporting in a weak category. Hot take though- Emma stone was subpar in it and I really don’t get the hype around her supposedly great English accent
I just watched it, enjoyed it a lot.
I think you gotta review “Hot Summer Nights” with Timothée Chalamet next.
Mitchell Weycker get ready for the tim
I think the line where Sarah says she and Abigail are playing different games is her pointing out that while Abigail used Anne’s affection mostly just to better her own personal circumstances in a somewhat circumscribed and selfish way, Sarah saw herself (perhaps falsely) as having used her role as Favourite for a grander purpose. By creating a grand new dynasty and attempting to directly control government policy Sarah saw herself as having made certain sacrifices with loftier goals in mind than Abigail who she is accusing of placing herself in a gilded cage for little more than a comfier bed, nicer clothes and nicer food to eat. Obviously we as the viewer are then left to decide if we believe Sarah, was she actually just selfishly satisfying her own arrogance, her own pleasure at being so good a manipulator or was her love for Anne a genuine thing that allowed her to achieve things most women could not at the time and for a higher purpose. Or was Sarah merely just using her skills one last time to poison Abigail’s well of happiness and checkmating Abigail with an unanswerable final barb that she new would create a wound that wouldn’t heal. I agree this was one of the best movies in many years.
dope review
One thing I would add is I think they are broken up into sequences not chapters it is a screenwriting term which is why I think it will get best screenplay- it commands a screenwriters attention.
Can you pleeeaaaassssseeeee review Twin Peaks: The Return?
Agreed on just about every point here. By far and away the best film of Oscars season for me. I'd like to see Lanthimos work with other people's scripts more in the future, because although his previous films have been great showcases for his distinctively flat, deadpan dialogue, I think that A Killing of A Sacred Deer took this a little too far and was a bit too 'Lanthimos'. With someone else's script - as with this film - I think he's attained a kind of freedom to focus on his stellar direction and imbue someone else's words and ideas with his classic style. I hope he picks up another great script soon and makes it his own.
Thanks for bringing thus movie to my attention. I skipped the spoilers since I desperately want to see it. Does anyone have any idea how I could see it in India?
I waited to see the film before watching your review. I agree with almost everything, except I haven’t seen Roma yet, so cinematography is still up for grabs. And screenplay? Yeah I still haven’t seen Roma. Or burning, or Shoplifters. But I will confess, this tops my Favourite Lanthemos film. It’s the dance sequence that puts it over the rest. The ending entirely sucked the joy I felt laughing at the characters. And I wanted to laugh along with the crowd, but somehow their laughter seemed stained. Out of discomfort, for some reason or other, rather than out of joy. Here’s to this film cashing out this awards season.
"I've been seeing way too many good movies lately." Assuming this comment isn't sarcastic, please share a list! BTW, just saw The Favourite this week at Vancouver Film Fest and really enjoyed it (which was hard for me to say about Lanthimos' other films, even if they were interesting).
I heard Lanthimos was heavily involved in shaping the script
I liked your review but that part where u asked youtube to delete Bobby Burn's channel was wayyyy too much
Nice review,
Not related to the review (although it was great, as always), but how were you able to go to the screening? Did you need a special pass or was the second one open to the public?
They were both open to the public (although navigating the website was troublesome), but I figured it was better to pay $20 for the second one than $75 for the first one
Gotcha. I was just wondering cause I'm an editor for the arts section of the Tufts paper and there was a Q+A/advanced screening for Bohemian Rhapsody that I was supposed to cover but the chief editors completely messed up with the passes and I didn't get to go lol
Ah, that’s rough
We love love this move ,,,📽📸,,,,,
I think that maybe the best film comparison for The Favourite would be Peter Greenaway's The Draughtsman's Contract, it has the same period/trippy feel.
I watched this review a few days ago, I was thinking about the writers a lot after, the script and Yorgos. This is a totally unfounded conspiracy based on zero facts or evidence, but is it possible the studios had a few scripts they bought to have for possible projects and Yorgos liked the premise with also knowing since it was written by two unknowns, he would be able to rewrite and change whatever he wanted with little to no fuss from the original writers? I know the duck race was supposed to be a cock fight but for obvious reasons had to be changed? Just some thoughts.
oh he definitely changed a lot of it- I don't know if this is fact but the director can change up to 49 percent and still have it be under someone else's name you just can't change more than half so he probably changed a lot but not enough for it to be his own film.
Love this movie
just a technical term but they superimposed the images at the end but layer works too i guess tow each their own.
Great movie
This review is just... P E R F E C T I O N
You nailed the prediction Olivia Coleman ftw!
I like you so much. I feel you brother.
I agree, Taylor! LOVED THE FAVORITE AND THE LOBSTER!
Except I don't think Nicholas Holt would have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor; I just don't think it was enough of a character for that kind of recognition. And I don't feel bad for him, though I enjoyed his and the other men's performances. The men were the background characters on purpose. :)
Olivia, Rachel, and Emma KILLED IT. They deserve all the awards! And the writers and Yorgos!
*Hoult
This movie is so good.
they are not supporting actresses they are all lead and if they get nominated for supporting it will be stupid and unfair because that's not what they are- Nicholas is a supporting character- it is like in danish girl when Alicia won for supporting- she was another lead- of course she won for supporting it's like an pro athlete winning a minor league game- unfair and obvious.
How’s new york
"2018's best film"? I didn't see it yet, but I've seen The Shoplifters and Burning and they're the 2 best movies of 2018 IMO. I've just bought The Favourite blu ray and I'm going to watch it very soon.
I will see 4 u. Although Yorgos is The Favourite of mine.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer and Phantom Thread are comedies
What about Dogtooth? If you enjoy Lanthimos you should watch it
And Colman won the oscars which is awesome.
Black panther will probably win costume emma and Rachel will go into supporting. Its currently between gaga and oliva to win leading
Steven Turner Gaga was better. Sam Elliott got robbed of a golden globe nomination.
Andy Tihonow i want gaga to win the oscar, but have feeling olive will win oscar
UGH i wanted to see this so bad!!! But the closet fucking theater to show it near me was 2 hours away
_filmés_
I liked The Favourite but didn't love it. The Killing of a Sacred Deer is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, but in The Favourite there's a lot more obvious goofy/comedic moments as opposed to Yorgos's trademark absurd style of humor. Like the scene where Nicolas Hoult knocks Abigail over, the dance scene you mentioned, Abigail jerking off her husband while coming up with a plan to get rid of Sarah, Sarah shooting at Abugail. It's not even that it wasn't funny but it's so plain and the exact opposite of what I like Lanthimos for. I wanted and expected something more like the scene when Abigail started hitting the book against her head.
This movie was also a lot different in that the characters were intentionally witty and sarcastic. There was a lot of promotion and discussion centered around this movie and how its progressive because the women get to be cruel and nasty, but women being snippy to each other doesn't really strike me as anything new. Like there's movies from 40s Hollywood that cover that same exact ground. I feel like the women in his previous films were grittier/grosser than Abigail, Sarah, and Queen Anne. Yeah Sarah got a scar and caked in mud and Emma Stone stepped on a rabbit, but Olivia Coleman made John C. Reilly stick his hand in a toaster in The Lobster, a woman murdered a dog, and Raffey Cassidy in AKoaSD told her brother he was gonna die and then (it was implied) she continued a relationship with Martin anyway.
man I wrote all this shit then pressed play again just for you to say he didn't write the script smfh
15 years ago Lanthimos directed trashy greek pop video clips, it's amazing how far he has come.
I gave it a 7/10, as I loved the script, acting and moral ambiguity but I felt that it dragged on way too long and that the beginning was kinda boring.
Wish your predictions had come true. Saw this film back in October at the San Diego film festival and thought it was just delightful. Was so happy when it got so much hype and so far it’s gotten...nothing. Really hoping it does well at the BAFTAS. And to the person who hasn’t seen ‘Roma’: don’t bother. It’s the worst film of all of them.
Maybe best fiction
One of the best but not THE best
rubbing her leg?
Its not even in the finalists for best hair/makeup. Vice will probably get that
The acting was fantastic. The sets and costumes were beautifully designed. I found plenty of the jokes funny. And yet, the movie dragged and dragged and dragged. Some choices that one might call "idiosyncratic" or "quirky", I'd call "goofy". I can see where Lanthimos was trying to go with the tone balancing, but it came off as a mess that made it hard to feel invested. Part of me feels that if this was a novel, I would have really liked it. I love period pieces, especially when they choose to highlight the comedy in the circumstances and the culture of the time. "The Favourite" just left me cold. I could laugh and feel at parts, but when the credits hit I said "Why did I watch this?" It seems that plenty of other people in my theater felt the same.
Quirky Normies
I was blown away by emma stone.
Well, if you want a bad movie I can recommend Madea's Family Funeral.
HEY!!
There is "dogtooth" also. Or you can't read subs?
Don't anger the Greeks, check it out.
it's a very strange and very mean film. i loved it. emma stone portrayed a psychopath so well.
