  • Air date: 10/29/1983. Special thanks again to Tom Olszta, his wife Karen, and also Aaron Fontaine for providing this show. :)
Before Fran Onorato dethroned Tom Olszta from his historic winning streak on Channel 5 in 1994, the two met roughly 10 years beforehand in late October of 1983, though Fran was the defending champion on this program instead of Tom, having won the previous two weeks before Tom came onto the show as his eventual opponent. This telecast was also the first week that Tom Olszta was on after winning the $10,000 top prize a couple months earlier from that year's big Championship show.
Some really good shot making from both bowlers throughout this match and decent scoring, but I'm still amazed at the first frame of what happened with Fran at 3:50!
Hope you all enjoy, R.I.P. Don Gillis and Fran Onorato.

That moment at 3:50 is EXACTLY the reason why you wait until the dead wood stops moving before rolling your next ball!

Shortly after the 18 minute mark Don Gillis mentions the Mohegan Bowlodrome a facility that offers ten pin and candlepin bowling. I bowled candlepins once it was at Mohegan.

Years later it would be Fran Onorato who would snap Tom Olszta's 23 match winning streak.

My mom was from Nova Scotia and she was so proud of Gillis as he was a Nova Scotia native!

7:00 I've never seen the 4 Horsemen on the first ball.

Fran missed way too many single pin spares. Those should be basic at this skill level.

His backup ball (left to right) wasn't always backing up. That's an issue with his release being a little off.

Basic? Can you do it? Did you hear he had a roll off score of 748? When you can do that let us know.
