Thank you Julia for the comparison! But i have one thing that I don’t like When you compare G 50 mm f2.5 with the ZA 55 mm f1.8 the background distance with model is different, it’s clearly look that the background on photo sample of G 50mm f2.5 is more far Maybe next video i want to see the camparison betwen sony G 50 mm f2.5 vs ZA 50 mm f1.8 in your video!
Hi Julia, how are you! Fantastic review as usual! I love your videos and photos! Just want to ask if you could make a comparison between 50mm f2.5 G vs 55mm f1.8 Zeiss! I’m having a hard time choosing which one to buy, specially for street and portraits. I also like to keep my gear small, but I really don’t know!! Thanks a lot! Cheers!
Thank you for all the great videos you have and are currently putting out, Julia. I love the 50mm G, f2.5 for it’s wonderfully small size, exceptionally sharp quality, lazer precise auto focus, and brilliant contrast and color reproduction. I own it and no doubt would buy it again! I really want to like the 24mm, f2.8 but just can’t get past the barrel distortion that shows up in photos, (not in videos or jpegs). You mentioned you were interested in this lens. Do you own it? How do you deal with the distortion? Again, nice review. These videos don’t make themselves and you did a great job showing them off.
Hi Julia - As always, great review! I realize that these lenses ae compact but, I wonder about the IQ and AF differences between these new lenses and the 28-75mm f/2.8 Tamron lens...
I'm so jealous. I wish nikon had some compact lenses like this. Thank you so much for sharing this comparison. This really makes me want to get the a7c. It's so freaking cute and compact more so now with these new lenses. I feel like these would be ideal for travel. By the way Dan is doing so well on these videos. I'm loving the lighting in your office as well ☺️.
Julia, excellent reviews and lessons as usual. I have the Sony A7C and just got the Sony 85mm f1.8. I have the new Sony 24mm f2.8 pre-ordered (vlogging and landscapes). I have also been thinking about the Sony 40mm or 50mm to kind of split the difference between the 24 and 85. - kind of an "all purpose" lens. I do both photos and videos and I like the lightweight setup (which is why I left the Canon DSLR world a few years ago). With your favorite lens being a 35mm f1.4, I'm guessing you may lean more toward the 40mm if you were going to get one of these for a small lightweight travel setup. I am leaning toward the 50mm as it seems to be in more in the middle 24+26 = 50 + 35 = 85. Don't think I can go wrong either way, but wondered what you would think about if you wanted to pick between these two lenses if you could only have one on your A7C?
Really informative, comprehensive review, as always! I had no idea these lenses existed, but it's really cool that they do. If I ever get an A7C for travel, that 40 might be on my list, though. I think 40mm is super unique and is a perfect blend of 35/50 if you're not sure which direction to go. Great photos as well. Last but not least, Lili is a fantastic model. Appreciate all the work you put into your videos!
I’m curious to see how the 40mm f2.5 compares to Samyang 35mm f2.8. Because if we’re prioritizing form factor, the Samyang 35 still seems more compelling especially given the pricing. Interested to know the difference in sharpness and autofocus.
the 40mm 2.5 is way more impressive in every way from the Samyang 35mm 2.8. I do own both and now never use the Samyang. The Sony is much sharper, cleaner colors, snappy autofocus, better bokeh (the 40mm helps compress for more bokeh too) The build quality is better than the GM lenses as well.
@@michaelneumann1865 I too have since played with both! CAN'T STAND the Samyang 35 2.8. What was I thinking even asking this LOL. Mostly I hate the softness, flaring, and desaturation the Samyang has. Didn't realize how much of the moment I was losing to the Samyang's almost filter-esque image quality.
Hello. i’m korean fan about your youtube video. thank you for the new lens review. I want to know how can you take a video during the take a picture at once. did you use any device to take a video? i don’t see any ninja recorder with your a7c in this video. can you tell me about it?
The 40mm and 50mm f2.5 are in awkward position to compete with either cheaper or faster Sony lenses. The advantages are size and fast focusing. The 24mm f2.8, in my opinion, is in a comfortable position comparing to 24mm f1,4 GM. I recently bought this 40mm f2.5 to use on A7C and APSC because I don’t have a small 40 or 35mm. The 50mm is not enough to replace 55mm f1.8 not to mention 50mm f1.2, the 24mm f2.8 is not an alternative to 24mm f1.4. After using the 40mm a short period of time, I like it more than the original reason to buy it, it balances well on A7C, focus very fast and accurate, at F4, it is very competent procuring great images. However, I don’t like it on A7R4, cropping in shows some color and distortion imperfection and I prefer a bigger lens to balance the body. It works good and looks great on Hasselblad Lunar (Sony Nex 7 inside) as a 60mm. I use it primary for street shooting, the small size doesn’t scare people and fast focusing captures moment nicely. The magnification and minimum shooting distance are proper for indoor and closeup. It does focus breath heavily, it doesn’t bother me since I don’t do video.
Thanks for the review. Love that Sony is pushing out so much stuff, though I wish they would allocate resources better (e.g., I don't think we needed the fx3, and if they'd just spent more on the 35mm GM to get rid of the focus breathing, I would have bought it).
Great video Julia (as usual). I too was a little confused as to why they brought out a 40mm and a 50mm…? Maybe you could chat with Sony for some of their insights?
Thank you for the great video. What can you say more specifically about this lens? I'm thinking about her. How does he cope in the evening or in the building? Is it worth paying extra money for Sony 1.4 G? I would be grateful if you write a few words.
The new lenses seem fine for a lightweight kit, but for me personally, with primes I want f1.8 so low light isn't as much of a challenge. I have the Sony 85, 55 and 35 f1.8 and they are small enough. If I get the 20mm G it'll complete my night time travel kit.
Same I was a bit disapointed to learn they are only 2.5 / 2.8 I wish they made them 1.8, that would be such a good combo with the A7C. I have the Sony 50mm f/1.8 which is pretty okay (loud autofocus is my main complain), how is the 55 and the 35 ? Which one are you using more ?
@@DeluXeZ3niiTh - The 55 is very sharp and I like the look. My only quibble with it is tiny bits of flare sneaking in at night. I usually don't notice until I'm in post. The 35 is sharp and I use the focal length more, but it doesn't have as much character as the 55, or even the 85mm. When light is not an issue I won't even bother to take my 16-35 zoom off in favor of the 35 prime. Maybe its me being lazy, but the 35mm f1.8 doesn't really flip my switch like other primes I carry.
Hey Julia.. an amazing video as always. I want to start my beauty makeup tutorial channel and would be borrowing my husband's sony a7c which lens would you recommend?
Hi Julia. I have not watched all your videos yet so I apologize if this is answered elsewhere. I am interested in a camera strap like you use and I looked on Amazon but they had quite poor reviews. Clasps breaking and the leather breaking and peeling. Do you have this in one of your “in my camera bag” videos or can you let me know what you use?
Thanks! Just found out about these today. I got tired of the missed focus and soft photos on my Samyang 1.4 primes. Sold them all and ordered the 50 2.5 today!. Id rather have the better build quality, faster and more accurate AF and sharper images in a smaller and lighter package then a faster aperture. These look awesome from everything Ive seen so far, like cheaper mini GM lenses, looking forward to it. Also looking forward to trying that new Sigma 90 2.8 coming out next week. Have you tested that one yet?
May i know if you are recording with the 24mm does it show strong distortion? Since i saw another review that the raw files coming from this lens is terrible with the distortion

I did have the Canon 40 with my MC-11 adapter on my Sony a7rii. Enjoyed it, but I find the AF is cleaner and better on the sony 40mm. And even though the Canon 40 is sharp, I find the Sony a bit sharper. Plus, when I was using the Canon, I didn't have Eye AF where I do on the Sony 40. But there is no question that the Canon 40mm is a sharp little lens just like the Canon 50mm 1.8 is.
All three lenses are great in general, but G 50mm f2.5 is more "artistic" in my opinion, especially in bokeh. By the way, dear Julia, why wouldn't you make the video about shooting on that sweet Yashica film camera? 😏
I really really wish you could do a 35mm vs 40mm comparison like the 28/35 one you did. Not a lot of videos are made about those. People always compare 24/35/50 🤷♂️
@bananapubesprincess6486 At the risk of sounding sacrilegious to purists, with my full frame Sony A74’s APSC 35mm, punch in, crop mode I have a hard time understanding the 35mm and 40 mm focal lengths. With photos I sacrifice megapixels but can punch in on my 24 mm and get the 35 mm, (36mm) perspective. No penalty at all when punching in and shooting 4k video. I have a 50mm, so punching in on my 24 mm I don’t feel I need to buy a 35 mm. Can you explain what I’m missing?
Considering getting this lens (dying at trying to find the most compact lens for A7III). Can anyone share which would be more suitable for filming at the gym? or will a lower F stop work better? (but the lens will be bigger and makes the camera more obvious)
Thanks for very good review.. IMHO, Unedited Sony color is quite horrible, especially skin tone.. But your LR preset is beautiful, but still cant completely get rid of strange skintone color.. But good job to Sony for bringing in new compact lens..
Hmm it really depends on what you shoot and how you are currently using your 24-70. The zoom lens is nice because you have so much variety in one lens from wide to a more portrait focal length.. whereas the prime is only 24. If you use your zoom more on the wider end then it could be an idea! You will definitely have a lighter set up too if that’s what you’re after.
I have had both and now just have the 50G. To me the 50 is just as sharp and more modern. The 55 is becoming a little bit dated now (still a good lens though). I don't really miss my 55 at all. I use different lenses for portraits where the 55 would mostly shine, but as they say, "to each, their own."
Indeed, what is the point of this comment? I presume you mean they don't fit your needs. I'm sure Sony will apologise for this oversight in due course. For me, as a photographer, they are appealing for street work. High quality construction, compact, fast enough and sharp. I don't need them all and l already have a good range of Zeiss Batis and Loxia. I can afford to buy one and probably will. That's my point.

Do you recommend to buy 50 2.5 G or 55 1.8 ZA? Everything I’ve heard is that the Zeiss is better, but still don’t know! Please help!
@@matiasroman2081 The 55 is faster and sharper but the 50 has more features. Depends on your needs.
What's the point? Not fast and compact enough, and price is not low

$600 kinda steep.
