    My favorite videos each week. I look forward to the next episode and greatly appreciate the time and effort you put into every aspect of your work. Here in the USA, it is really hard to find a woodworker that puts that much effort into finishing. Thanks for sharing.

    Gosh,seeing you make those beads takes me back when I was an apprentice in the joinery shop. We never had in feed rollers on the spindle moulder, it was fed in by hand, and the sanding was also done by hand, no machine for that, all done by the apprentice. Happy days. Lovely work as usual Ollie, your eye to detail is incredible. Bravo 👏

    Why no primer? Prime, sand, prime, sand until the surface is good, then several coats of the finish paint. Primer is generally much easier to sand, and cost less.

    Re my poor painting technique comment last comment last video - lol I take it all back. - but it might have been helpful to mention at the time or put a text edit in that your previous paint finish requires sanding back again - some people might not consider that part and just think that's the final finish if they don't see this video.

    Just do a brush finish. The finish will be as good or better than spraying. Or if the customer is ok seeing some brush marks, do a linseed oil paint finish. Allback has a new additive that gives a better shine with less brush marks and it will last forever. I know Allback has the formula for BM Essex Green because I paid them to match it.

    In this modern age of AI, it’s satisfying to watch a skill that will never be replaced. All master craftsmen have a duty to ensure their knowledge and expertise is not lost. You are lucky to be in the position where the skills and knowledge that you mastered, through hard work, are made available to be appreciated and kept alive for the future. RUclips is flooded with wannabe woodworkers who flaunt their limited skills, don’t come close to someone at the top of their game. Keep posting, and I for one will keep watching.

    Maybe I missed something... but either you have a primer coloured the same as your top coat, or you're spraying topcoat directly onto unprimed wood on your staff beads? I'd be interested to hear what system you're using if you can get a coloured primer? I use Sikkens Rubbol which I get from Symphony Coatings (I've noticed you use them) and the best they can offer is white or black primer - even grey is a special request!

    That music was more depressing than having to spend a few hours hand sanding!!

  • @rossl2544
    @rossl2544 9 месяцев назад

    that's not a paint you can sand or if it is its not dry which is why it keeps balling/clogging the sandpaper up. The sanding was leaving a lot of pig tails on that paint and hand sanding will also do the same if the paper is clogged up so best bet is leave it longer to dry or try wet sanding instead

    • @BradshawJoinery
      @BradshawJoinery  9 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, time pressures meant it had to be done, so it sanded with gauling quite well, I think left another day and went over lightly again which it then sanded the surface properly. The paint took a very long time to dry and getting 4 coats on was a nightmare!

    • @_nacnud_
      @_nacnud_ 9 месяцев назад

      What paint did you use for this Oliver? And is this a usual technique you employ of using top coat as primer? I think I remember you doing it on another project a while back. I've been tempted to try it myself for a while now

    • @rossl2544
      @rossl2544 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@BradshawJoinery Yes sorry it was not a dig buddy i do get that time is not always on your side. Maybe warming the paint up a bit before spraying it would help with drying times (if you can keep the area where the parts are being dried warm while it fully cures) it would also help with the paint following out to. Last year I painted the doors in my uncles house gloss white for him and they came out looking and feeling like glass but the paint took forever to dry being water based (it was done in the summer months and I still had to use extra heat)
      Happy Christmas though buddy and all the best for the new year

    • @rossl2544
      @rossl2544 9 месяцев назад

      @@_nacnud_ Primer is not so important when painting wood as the wood will soak up/draw in the resin from the paint creating/giving the paint the adhesion to the part your spraying unlike when painting metal. Primer is good if you have an uneven surface as its normally a paint you can sand down and generally dries faster than top coat so you can use it to fill in the low spots on a part.
      if this is your first go at painting i would recommend using a white or grey primer for your first coat and then after that mix a little of your top coat in with the following coats of primer. this helps you in a couple of ways, 1 when you do your sanding back of the primer before top coat you can see any low spots that might be left behind but you also know that as soon as the paint layer turns white you can't sand anymore or you risk sanding back to the wood itself and having to start over again 2 it means that if the item is ever scratched or the paint surface is chipped you have less chance of the damaged area showing white/grey primer
