- Ronnie Wood reminisces about his time as Jimi Hendrix's flatmate in Holland Park, where he'd play guitar both left and right handed, and reveals Jimi's embarrassment over his own voice.
Ronnie also recalls the last time he ever saw the guitar legend leaving Ronnie Scott's in London.

I also once spoke shortly with Jimi. It was after a concert in Gothenburg, Sweden, in september 1967. It was a lousy concert, because there was a technical problem that sometimes made Jimi’s guitar silent, often in the middle of a solo. After some seconds it came back and then it disappeared again some minutes later. Jimi got pissed of course, changed guitars, pedals and cords, but nothing helped. Finally he throwed a silent guitar over his shoulder and left the stage - then the sound came back and we heard something like an airplane crash. I got the opportunity to visit him behind stage, and he seemed to be annoyed over the bad performance. So what is a 13-year old guy supposed to say to someone he already know will be a legend? I started with; ”Great concert tonight!” Jimi looked puzzled and then started to laugh - guess he realized I tried to do my best to cheer him up. Anyhow, I use to say about this short meeting with Jimi, that I once made Hendrix laugh.
Man I’d do anything for an experience like that with Jimi even as simple as your interaction was, you are a lucky man

Someone was saying how nobody cares about a story about Jimi, I do, maybe I'm in the minority but I'm always facinated to hear tales of those times. I can't get enough Jimi talk to be honest. My guess is I'm not alone.
I'm with you. I always love to hear stories from Jimi's peers or anybody who knew him for that matter. Even Robert Fripp who was from an entirely different music camp had an interesting encounter with him. Apparently Jimi was a big fan of King Crimson, and introduced himself to Fripp by saying "I want to shake your hand with this hand, it's closer to my heart." Cool stuff!
Just remember most are "tales". Lot's of embellishments and exaggerations.
Yeah Clapton had said that in an old interview. That he didn't wanna hear stories about Hendrix anymore, but it was obvious that he was just incredibly heartbroken that he lost not only someone who understood the way his mind worked musically, but also just a good friend. It's sad.

You want another Jimi story?..... not that I ever met him, I was only 17 when he died. But 8 years later I had a houseful of musicians at the top of their game including one legendary guitarist, one great guitarist and one very good one among the various instrumentalists. We were chatting about other guitar players, their styles, riffs and licks, but there was one obvious player that nobody mentioned. In my amateur naivety I asked the legendary player, "What do you think about Jimi Hendrix?". The room instantly went silent as if someone had pulled a plug, and ten to fifteen very awkward seconds crawled by before the very good player released everyone from the spell by emphatically stating, "He's dead". It was as if every brick in the building had heaved a huge communal sigh of relief. "Yes" agreed the legend, "That's right, he's dead." But there was still a lot of unease in the room. The great player added, "He was a genius, but he's not around anymore." Someone else said, "He's in the past." With everyone but me apparently satisfied with that appraisal, conversation picked up again on another topic .
I was shocked and confused by this reaction and it took a few more months of associating with professional muso's for me to work it out. They were still afraid of him. He had been dead for 8 years but all it took was the mere mention of his name to shake their egos so much that they returned to the state of "How can I compete with that?"
Jimmy's voice was unique as his guitar playing . total package .

I read recently that John Lennon also could not stand the sound of his own voice. Two of my favorite singers/musicians. Moral of the story? The things you don't love about yourself might still be a gift to the world somehow.
Jimmy used to do dozens of vocal takes in the studio and patch them all together to compile one take he thought was decent

What finally made Jimi say "Fuck it" about being self-conscious about the quality of his vocals was how Bob Dylan didn't care about his.
Jimi's voice is beautiful especially on songs such as Angel, Castles made of sand, Wind cries Mary, Little Wing, actually his voice is great on everything he sang on. I also think Jimi was a great lyricist/songwriter the fact that his guitar playing was years ahead of its time overshadows his songwriting talents.
Jimi was the greatest thing since Italian beef sandwiches from Novi’s beef and deep-fried shrimp from Troha’s on 26th and Pulaski!
OH, & by the way...I thought Jimi was an incredibly SOULFUL singer!... Always thought his singing was underrated! It Fit his music to perfection!

Cal Congo yes! Hearing Jimi sing when he wanted to sound sweet, was like falling into a field of lavender , and one could breathe deeply of the beauty in him. As in the sweet parts of “Are You Experienced?”; another way his singing could make me feel was as though our Spirits were flying, free and timeless.
Remember all the possibilities we believed in for awhile? Like love and peace and no more war...sigh.

And you can HEAR the annoyance in his voice just like he's a regular guy when he talks about Jimi being able to swap hands when playing the guitar and STILL being able to play well BOTH ways...effortlessly!

Hey guys, I found that Guitar Player interview out on Google -Read This:James: But those things were somehow secondary to the flow. He used to come in - remember that time in New York when he played that club there with B.B. King?
Sam: Yeah, Generations. Right after Martin Luther King.
James: Yeah. The same week we were there with B.B. King, and Martin Luther King got shot. B.B. King really played his set to him, just really played beautifully. B.B. King played so beautifully and delicately that night for Martin Luther King. He was fantastic. But anyways, Hendrix came in every night that week and jammed. They stayed open all night. After the regular scheduled acts were over, they stayed open all night for jam sessions. And Hendrix came in every night, and he played everything under the sun! He played all the Beatles stuff, he played Bach, Beethoven - on the electric guitar. And not only that, he could play the guitar right-handed and left-handed. Either handed!

James: Yeah! Upside-down.
Sam: That’s a fact.
James: He played his guitar [points to Sam].
Did he flip it over to play it?
James: Either way!
Sam: He would flip it over. He could play it both ways, or restrung so it’d be right for a left-hander.
James: Right. He could play right-handed guitar left-handed, left-handed guitar right handed, right-handed guitar right handed, and left-handed guitar left handed.
Sam: And it wasn’t like he was compromising because it’s a harder position. It was all the same level of musicianship.
James: Yeah. I could not tell any difference when I was listening to him play - we sat there all night for a whole week, every night, with him playing. And he played all night long.
Ron Wood is a totally underrated/under appreciated musician on both sides of the ocean. I saw him slay Clapton on TV once and I bet he doesn't think so. A monster on guitar and bass. You all better recognize.

Yeah, he carried guitar playing in The Faces just by himself and it's glorious, his work there was just outstanding
I'm one of the biggest Rolling Stones fans you'll ever meet, but to be honest they hold Ronnie back if you want my honest opinion. What he plays for the Stones won't ever be as good as what he did with the faces.
There is a video on youtube of Ron Wood playing blues with Buddy Guy and Jonny Lang. To say Ron stole the show would be an understatement. Awesome guitarist indeed!
Loved Jimi's speaking voice and loved his singing even more, his vocal melody and phrasing was incredibly free and spontaneous which I think matches his music perfectly considering the incredibly far out statements and stories he was singing, just makes it even more mesmerising

I had a very short glimpse dream about him when i was 14 and he was alive playing gigs in California. I can still see the glimpse 51 years later exactly.
I wasnt a big fan and haven't followed his music over the decades so I'm discovering it now and it's obvious everything about him, clothes, music, all of it, was 50 to 100 years ahead of the times. His interviews and comments were so intelligent, it seems like he's alive today.

Jimi Hendrix was a huge part of my life growing up and so were the Stones. In a way current "musicians" can never be.
Not a put down it's just people invent things ..an artist like Ronnie pictures etc read his diary no mention..same with Janis Joplin jumping on him Ronnie and rod Stewart..were not in that immediate circle in 60s rod the mod used follow Brian Jones like a lap dog

Ron has a Unique look, one of character and he seems to come off very humble and honest.
Ronnie's talent a bit wasted in the RS but still my favorite of the RS. The Faces would have had even more to give creatively, but their influence in their styles was much greater than most.

This is a pretty good example of the difficulty of the rock and roll life. So much is put into making music that everything else is put on the back burner - friends, family, health, living a normal life. The best make a lot of money, but the money doesn't change the fact that they live a life of sacrifice. For sure there's a lot of ego involved and love of fan adulation, but the music is always number one. We get to enjoy it, and our lives would be lesser without it.
And still when he died he had nothing more than a hundred dollars in his bank account. Jimi's not just the greatest guitar player ever, but also one of the most financially abused artist in music's history.

I marvel at Jimi's guitar prowess. No one played a guitar like him. Yes, there are brilliant, technical guitarists, but they don't touch what Jimi did. Indescribable really, he just figured out the sounds he wanted from the guitar, and made them happen. I don't expect to see talent like that again.
Ehh.. Jimi was great don't get me wrong at all but I don't think he lives up to his billing when it comes to songwriting. I like his songs but for as much as he's talked up you'd think he was the greatest songwriters/technical musician of all time. There are several people I would put before him as better overall musicians but I won't get into that. My point is only that Jimi was obviously great and I like his music *but* he's over hyped IMO. Again I don't want to offend any Jimi fans (as I am one) but no single musician should be talked up this much.

I can't see him moving or what he's wearing when I listen to his albums. He was a great musician don't get me wrong but sometimes he's just put too high up on that pedestal you know?

Simone Gracia I totally agree.Kids today are so impressed by the flavor of the moment than to really appreciate true talent.They think "Maroon 5" is the greatest lol. or should i dare to say "C-RAP!" yuck! I'm happy to say my nephew (b.'89) loves all the older music,so there is hope yet for the younger gen. But the kid at the top who asked "who is Hendrix? and "who cares?" is just sad.

Wow. Ron Wood is basically a music legend, and you can see the deep regard he had for Hendrix. I loved his comment on how Jimmy was sitting there switching hands and could play guitar as well w/ either one. " It was annoying to see..." Such honesty from a great guitar player like Wood; and knowing over the years many good musicians myself I know they would have felt the same seeing Hendrix do something almost no one could do like that. It's humbling and sets you back for a second!
Some musicians have an instant connection in-between their brain and their instrument, Jimi was one of those. Thanks for the story Ronnie.

Hendrix' voice was incredible. Average singer but awesome voice, and that's what matters. It sounded weakest live, as he played highly complex guitar when he sang which stole his concentration. But in the studio, one of the coolest voices in rock

I didn't meet, speak with, or hang out with Jimi. But I certainly got a huge crush on him when my parents took us to see the film Rainbow Bridge. I was in 6th grade. He was so handsome, sexy, and his music so excellent. How could one not?

I became a huge fan of of Jimi Hendrix in 67 when his debut album Are you experienced was released. I've often said he was #1 for me out of all the music I love. I have covered him many times on my live Podcast @royceinthehouse I'll never forget my sister coming into my room and asking is that Jimi Hendrix. I said yes, she says do you know what he does on stage? Yes, he plays the guitar and sings. She said yeah but he rubs his thingy on the mic stand pole. I said I don't care, I like his music. Later I was confronted by my mother in the hallway asking if it was true, lol.

He also responsible for getting g the cops called to our house. I was only 10 when he moved in but he inspired me to jump on the couch with a broom and play air guitar. H played Purple Haze at my grade school, behind the bus garage, while I danced cedar with Ramona, the first hippie chick I was ever sprung up on. She showed me how to do the "Dirty Dog" and she proved to be.Good times. He even inspired me to write songs and play monster guitar. Which I still do. Then there was this .... rumor that he passed away. But there's no way that's true because he still sleeps in my closet, and comes alive on my record player. I love him like a brother. Love jimis music and I know I grew up in the early 70s but not discovered a lot of bands around mid 70s .it would of been great if some of these artists were around and put them on some collaborations like jimihendrix,phil,lynott,sydbarret/waters,Bono from zeplin,santana,so many others but if you would of out all these guys in a studio you could imagine shit goes bad or sometimes the vibe could of been unimaginable if they were alive with a great couple songs as a whole 😊👍🏼🔥r i.p.jimi forever even thru this coronaagenda I still play your songs ✌🏽🔥
