  • Assembling the frames is one of the first major points of any boat build. In this one I assemble the sawn frames for the river boat build using epoxy and bronze screws.
These videos are a work in progress so please let me know what you think down in the comments.

Some folks might have said that was a shovel full of horse sh*t pouring out your scupper hole and wished you would nail a gusset over it but not me. I was with you all the way. Nice move pulling that fillet out to the edge of the frame. Totally worth it. For others reading this, Russel Brown's E-book “Epoxy Basics” has a ton of solid information and one of the tips is his recipe for a filleting compound. The trick is finding the right filler combination that is both structural and sands out easily. It doesn’t hurt if it looks decent if varnished too. His recipe uses equal parts of West System fillers 404/406/409. That’s high density; colloidal silica; low density fillers.

    Sir,
I have a drift boat I built form scratch using plans, river boat to you I think. My question to you has to do with varnish over epoxy. I'm about to clean the interior decks and sides that are not painted (clear wood). The clear area is fiber glass/epoxy with varnish on top, 2 coats. My question is it has been six years since the build, the varnish is a protection for the epoxy against IV rays. The boat has been garaged or covered when not in use. My plan is to wash the interior, sand with (suggestion) and apply 2 more coats of varnish, Marine Spare non-gloss. Any suggestions are welcome, I've watched your varnish and brush care videos, was just wondering if you had any advice for varnish over epoxy. All advice welcomed. Thank you.

Scotch-brite and 400 grit will give you good tooth. Anytime I Varnish over epoxy it gets a minimum of 8 coats of varnish. Epifanes or Totalboat make excellent options.
