Setting up the frame
Assembling the back bone of a boat can often times be one of the hardest parts of whole build.
Connecting the frames, transom, Stem, keelson, and chines all while keeping things from twisting or dropping out of position can be a BIG challenge but its worth it. Though manny boat builders hate the statement (myself included) its starting to look like a boat.

Making the stem and knee for the river boat.
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.3 года назад
In this one I make the stem and knee assembly for the river boat. I opted to use white oak and mahogany for this as they are both very rot resistant, are fairly easy to work and hold fasteners well. These are key components to the structure of the boat and must be ready before I am able to finish setting up the building jig. If the video is a bit blurry on your computer check the settings optio...
Setting up the Strongback

How to Varnish with a”pro.” Applying Varnish
Просмотров 73 тыс.4 года назад
This is how I Varnish every time I take on a Varnish job. Step 1. Sanding is how you get a flat shiny finish. If you are starting from scratch I recommend 80 grit (if it’s really rough) fallowed by 150 or 180. If you already have Varnish down you’ll want to use Scotch-brite(call this 1A) for the first scratch. The next coat gets 220 (1B) fallowed by Scotch-brite . Now just go back and forth bet...

  • @paulbriggs3072
    @paulbriggs3072 Год назад

    Polyurethane varnishes are tougher and more scratch resistant than all those varnishes. Just one problem- they avoid making marine varnishes from polyurethane for the very reason that they are so hard and thus brittle. Marine varnishes need to be FLEXIBLE and thus softer than indoor varnishes. They need to expand and contract and not let go. The tests you did were not really marine varnish tests. Flexing and gloss retention would be the proper test, plus heat and cold cycle tests on a wood that is known for expanding and contracting.

    Thanks for the information! Is there ever a coat that is 100% varnish without thinner? And question #2: What sanding grit coarseness do you recommend as your moving from bare wood to the last coat?

    • @oliverwoodcraft9733
      @oliverwoodcraft9733 2 года назад

      After the first two thinned coats every coat should be 100% unless conditions don’t allow that. As far as sanding grit I use 320 on the first few coats of 100%. After that it depends on what kind of wood I’m working with. If the grain is filling well I often times use 220 to flatten. I always use 320 on the second to last coat and 400 on the last one. Scotch brite is your friend when building thickness.
