There's indeed a sepcial episode of longer lenght called "3D2Y" covering these events with renewered animation that came out a lot more recently than this part of the anime. I remember also being confused about what Luffy was trying to do but thinking it was so cool how much impact his actions have all over the world.
At this point the Straw Hat storylines were part of the main manga storyline instead of just cover pages. So it's no wonder there's more substance to them.
Yeah, that was straight up misinformation from Jent. Where'd he even get that impression, have we ever seen Akainu show even a glimpse of happiness after killing someone? I don't think so.
I get that it's a different interpretation of his character and I think you guys are probably right in that he didn't necessarily enjoy himself. But it's not CRAZY that I had that interpretation. Look at Episode 482, around 17 minutes in - he's taunting the Whitebeard pirates and he has a grin that transfers into a smirk as he does it. It certainly wasn't a somber speech. It devolves into rage afterwards of course, so it's not like he's a cackling maniac as my words may have implied. Now he was obviously trying to provoke them, and provoking sometimes requires putting on a calm face, but I still think there were times like that where he was smirking in pretty messed-up situations, so that's the reason I had that impression in my mind, and I think that's a pretty normal feeling for me to have.
@JentWatchesOnePiece Understandable, you have this interpretation is not your fault. Because in the manga he wasn't smiling in that scene, actually he only smiled one time in the manga (When Whitebeard and him are trash talking each other),other then that he never smiles, every time we see him he is angry. I don't know why anime make him smiled, make him more like a villain maybe ?

They villainize him more than is canon, make him look scared when WB shows up behind him, make him look physically MUCH weaker when fighting with WB... Such a great adaptation. Seriously, I don't mind these types of changes in a PARODY if the goal is to make it funny or something, but to alter how the character is seen by the audience THIS MUCH?! I don't even. This is not the worst thing Toei does, but as a big Sakazuki appreciator it still pisses me off.
