Evonne Goolagong Cawley - ‘The Groundbreaking Champion’
Former World No. 1 female tennis player Evonne Goolagong Cawley was one of the sport’s leading players in the 1970s and early-1980s when she won 14 Grand Slam titles including two Wimbledon championships. Both an Australian of the Year and Australian Sportswoman of the Year, Evonne was co-patron of Reconciliation Australia along with Sir William Deane and served on the Board of the Indigenous Land Corporation and National Centre of Indigenous Excellence.
Between 1997-2001, the Federal Government appointed Evonne as a consultant in Indigenous Sport, forming The Evonne Goolagong Sports Trust to review Aboriginal sports facilities and raise funds to finance new facilities and equipment. Today she continues that legacy with the Goolagong National Development Camp for Indigenous girls and boys using tennis as a vehicle to promote better health, education and employment and is a mentor to up and coming Aussie champ Ash Barty.
