Absolutely needing more of this content! I would love to see what things an AC should have technical knowledge of. I always stress about asking too many questions clarifying how someone wants something to be shot (I know that can become really annoying for some people). I would also like to know more terminology that is used between an AC and DP. And finally what you'd recommend an AC to carry on them at all times and what they'd include in their kit. Thanks!
I hear you on all of that! So much of being an AC is about finding the right tone and relationship with your DP - whether you only work with them for one day, or build a relationship over years. I hope this and the next video will help with that!
Thanks for sharing this on RUclips Matt. Really appreciate more content like this. This is very high value content on someone as myself who wants to keep focusing on doc filmmaking.
One of the reasons I’m starting a hands on cinematography program next week is to get experience, portfolio and network on this. I’ve been on set doing other roles and finally decided to make the jump into cinematography. Looking forward to your content!
Great value Matt, Im glad i found and subscribed to this channel through Luc. Amazing work, thank you for sharing and i encourage you to keep it up, much appreciated
Hey Matt - thank you for sharing your knowledge about the impact of AC work to grow as future a DP. I'll try to get some reps in both doc and commercial work to improve my craft. A bit of constructive criticism: I think it would be better to turn down the music during your talking heads since it's more distracting than adding to your message. Thank you and take care
thnx Matt for that video,it would be cool to see a video from a to z on how to collect full setup(with all cables, motors, all radio system etc.mutch thnx
Thank you for sharing how to become a good AC to assist DP. I would really love to learn how to get the AC work without any filmschool background. I had made 2 self documentary projects. Am I qualified to apply a AC work or should I keep making more self doc projects in order to get hired? I have been trying to reach out to different docu people in my city but no luck at the moment. I would really love to get into the real docu project.
Thank you for checking out the video! Getting started can always be difficult at times, but soon enough, someone will give you a chance that can set everything in motion. Check out my conversation with Luc Forsyth where I talk about how I got started and opportunities for people to get connected into the industry. ruclips.net/video/A6mnE68cv6E/видео.htmlsi=r1vKHibKUA4iQYBi I hope that helps and good luck on your journey!
in the uk an a/c is a role on ads and dramas. making sef funded doco wont help. you need to know arri ,preston, arri focus motor, - rental house, camera trainee , 2 a/c,- a/c -retirre. On docs the LCO pull thier own focus or use sony AF, its not 2012 anymore. To DP have the right parents and firends. Lerning to pull at 2 by being hot a/c wont help - producers dont even know that pulling is occuring until it soft
Solid question! I think the “proper term” is assistant camera, but normally people just say camera assistant. Maybe it doesn’t sound as proper. Who knows!
That is certainly the question! There is no one answer, but instead depends a lot on where you live and the community that exists. My recommendation would be to get in touch with the local film commission, rental houses, Facebook groups, etc to connect with people that you can work with. Also check out my conversation with @LucForsyth about how I got started. I hope that helps! ruclips.net/video/A6mnE68cv6E/видео.html
Edit. Im UK based and DP is not really doing doc LCO does doc. DP is a drama visionary. Mostly well monied and connected in a position to sell thier vision (lets make it organic, what about some vintage lenses? .. im so original). 1st is just one of the hoolies the producers employ to get that vision.. like cranking a 4k out of a truck pulling focus is annoying but has to happen. Better to learn who Monet is and what wine is best to buy if you want to climb into DP shoes????

Why is it called AC when you say Camera Assistant? Why not CA?
Solid question! I think the “proper term” is assistant camera, but normally people just say camera assistant. Maybe it doesn’t sound as proper. Who knows!
ok, but how do i get the chance to be an 1 Ac? Where and how can i get the chance to become an AC?
