So this is an excellent review and I just wanted to thank you again for saving my lens. A few tips for those that want to do this themselves.
1. Make a mark along the entire assembly with a black marker. For the zoom and autofocus barrel, I just put a small piece of paper tape and then marked the tape (obviously you don’t want marks on the beautiful black barrel 😜). The mark allows you to have some idea as to where everything should sit. Makes it much easier to find the correct holes for the screws.
2. At 10:27, we are removing the axis alignment screws. Very important to count how many turns it takes to remove it. I simply took a photo of each screw and the position it was sitting in before I removed them. Actually the screws may have a small mark on them or you can mark them yourself with ink. Put tape around your screw driver and mark some indication spots on your screwdriver. Makes counting the turns very easy.
3. Avoid touching the glasses with your fingers. If you do, use some sort of cleaner to clean the glasses. You don’t want smudges on the lenses.
4. 11:39, Be very very careful when removing this aperture assembly. There’s 2 sets of blades. One that attaches to the motor (what we’re replacing) and the other is what we need to separate. Be very careful not to SPLIT the assembly open as ALL the 9 aperture blades will immediately fall out. This is what I did and it was an absolute painnn to put back together. Pay attention and only remove the assembly as 1 piece. It should come out with the 2 disks sandwiched together.
5. At 14:23, I put electric grease between the moving barrels. Makes the zoom much smoother.
6. 22:52, the autofocus barrel/zoom barrel has a special slot that the metal tab sits in. You might need to rotate the small glass barrel at the top of the lens in order to align it the focus ring correctly. For some reason I separated these 2 barrels and installed them separately You will know if it is sitting properly when you rotate the focus ring and you see this small glass barrel rotate up and down. Same with the zoom barrel. Test it before installing the rest of the small screws.
Follow these steps and you shouldn’t have a problem repairing your lens.

Volvo guy, all my blades fell out too. That was one day I’ll never get back. I found a loose plastic piece though, and wondering if you could help me identify it. It’s small and semicircular but it’s not extraneous so I’m stuck with my reassembly until I figure out what it is and how to reassemble it.
How did you get the aperture blades back in place????
@@xXxGATESxXx Happened to me and it took me about 2 hours and 30 tries. They are so flimsy and the slightest breeze will blow them everywhere. Major PITA! Also, there are 7 blades, not 9 :)
Thank you very much for the video. Here some information for people who might get the Err1 error on their Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8 MKI but can't fix it immediately but want to use the lens as good as possible. It might be the aperture connection cable which is damaged. If you hear some clicking when turning the zoom, then it is probably so. These connectors get stretched over time with zooming and then bend, get stuck, wear or get pinched and break. Another test is to see if your camera takes photos in f2.8. Be careful to watch the front of your lens to make sure if your aperture is fully open. (You can play with the aperture settings in the camera and the aperture test button on the side of your camera. The aperture needs to be fully open). If the camera takes photos that way and AF works (If you put it in f2.8 mode and the AF doesn't work, check if the aperture physically really is fully open, at least on my lens that is the only position AF works)
If that is the case for you the Aperture connector is most probably broken, which is a 10$ piece, however needs full disassembly of the lens and possibly soldering if you only want to exchange the cable without exchanging the whole aperture unit (>70$). Therefore I found some workarounds I want to share:
In f2.8 the lens should always work with AF, I saw many other discussions which stated that also.
I also can trick the camera into using different apertures by selecting a high aperture in the camera, e.g f8 and pressing the aperture test button multiple times until the aperture closes. Possibly also by pressing the shutter and getting the error message, but this is slower. It is not reliable, you can't be sure which aperture gets selected, as the aperture closes or opens a random amount. Look at the front of the lens for the aperture closing. In theory f.4 should be the aperture half closed, f.5.6 3/4 closed etc. I am not sure in what increments the aperture jumps, might only be full F-stops or finer or totally random and even enable normally not possible aperture values. Only thing I can tell is that it is much harder to get it to jump to high values, F8 or f11 might be the maximum I saw and these are already rare.
When you think the diaphragm is good, put the setting in the camera back to f2.8. The aperture will stay stuck at what you set it to. The camera will say you shoot in f2.8, but in reality it is a different aperture value. This value will stay until you select a different value from f2.8 in the camera and you push the aperture button again. However even if you find your favorite aperture that way, AF will not work. It will always go from closest to infinite, never finding focus. So if you use AF, set the focus before changing the aperture. To get AF working again you need to select a different aperture than f2.8 in the camera and press the aperture test bottom on the side of the camera until the aperture is fully open (f2.8). Then AF will work again. AF will not work if the aperture is in any other position than fully open.
So it is a choice between only f2.8+AF or inaccurately something between f2.8-f22 without AF and no easy way to know the real aperture without calculating it with test photos. Still helpful if you for example always shoot at infinity and want an aperture over f2.8. Just take a few test shots to determine if you get the depth of field you want. Or maybe you are lucky and your AF is not affected at the same time.
Thanks for the video. I learned that Canon no longer services the lens after I received the error code. Add me to the list of people who was able to repair this issue with your video. I bought this lens in 2006 - glad to see it's life extended a little longer.
HI, yes . After the exchange the flax you will need to make AXIS Alignment of 2G lens group for better image resolution and contrast . Without this alignment the lens will make blurry images. better send the lens to us. Thank you!

The lens was making crunchy noises when I zoomed. It rendered a error message from the camera and was unusable. Apparently it had a broken diaphragm unit. after sending it to you it is now working as if it was brand new. Quick response to my emails, good information, price quote was accurate. Thank you for showing the disassembly. My lens wouldn't zoom further than 30mm, I found out that a flex cable inside was trapped inside the mechanism.
Thank you for your great Video. Attention for others: on 15:16, the cable is first not in the right spot of the outer cylinder. This can crack your cable if you turn the cylinder and reduce the lifetime of the new one!

Hi , you should put them together and align them on half close position. Then install the upper ring which open and close the blades.

Hello. Thanks for your video. What is the way to align the AXIS you use? In your video You said "AXIS Alignment Screws: Need a Light Source and Proyector" But I don't know what do this means. Or what is that process you mentioned. Can be done at "home", or it is necessary some kind of special Lab equipment? Can you please explain the process/processes or maybe make a video?

Hello. Thank you for the interest. For the AXIS Alignment you need light source and projector. This is special tool which allow you to make the best resolution on any lens :). I can't make video for this because this process is too long(about 20-30 min). If you don't have the equipment the repair result is will be very compromise.

Please help. When I went to remove the aperture module/case/diaphragm from the barrel, some of the blades fell out and I had to put them back on myself after replacing the flex cable for the aperture.
However, I have found a loose, small, semicircular plastic piece that I do not know where to replace or what it goes to. Can you please help me identify what it is and where it goes? I can send a picture.

I'm trying to do this repair but one of the 3 screws that you remove at 6:20 is stuck as hell. I've tried every method I know to remove a stuck screw but now it's stripped & stuck. Do you know what could cause that ? And do you know if I could do something about it ? Thanks
Use dremel to drill the screw, for destroying it. Replace it with another, identical (at least is a solution)

how do you get the glass piece out right before the one with the aperture on it. I took the three screws off with the brass fittings but the glass piece wont pop out. in the video it skips forward and its already popped out halfway in your hand.

Joseph Yun hi , yes if you follow the video, but need to align the lens groups with AXIS alignment tool. It is expensive and need to have experience to work with it. Better send the lens to us or workshop with this kind of equipment. It is not just to exchange the flex or diaphragm. Without axis alignment the picture quality will be poor.

my lens’ aperture just got stuck n if i take a photo with narrow aperture it will show err 01 communications between camera and lens faulty. Also i cant zoom out until 24mm, it just get stuck on the 28mm (it also make sounds when i try to zoom out). The auto focus is also broken. Can it be repaired?? Hi, we can repair this lens . The problem is that the diaphragm or the flex is defective and may be one of the rollers are worn out. If you want to repair it , better send it to us :) After the replacement of the flex or diaphragm you'll need to make axis alignment with special equipment.
Hi there . You don't show how you out back the diaghram unit. You just skip to putting it back together. My unit seems to be quite flimsy inside . Anyway you could give me some advice ?
Hi, thank you for the comment :) You just put in the same position. With the gold posts and the screws you can put in position. 13:57 The tricky part is to align the Diaphragm and the lens group with other lens goups to achieve the best resolution on both sides 24 and 70 mm.You need special equipment or try to find it by hand. :)
