Indeed. As well as Lovejoy, I thought he was particularly good in Deadwood. A prolific actor, so there's much out there featuring him. A couple of early films of his worth catching him in are "Sky West and Crooked" and "Villain".

Ian McShane is a fine actor. I watched all of the episodes of Lovejoy with him, Dudley Sutton, and Phyllis Logan, plus other things he's been in. He crafts very convincing characters. Never saw this one before, so it's a special treat. Haven't seen him in a long while. Hope he is well and doing fine. 😊😊😊
That was like a CFF film for grownups. I was hooked immediately! The parts where Ian McShane narrated in an out of character voice to save dialogue/money reminded me of those Hallmark Channel films my mother-in-law & I used to watch after my wife had gone to sleep.
Definitely! It works well as a 'film noir' style device. I didn't really notice that sometimes it was used to save film stock by exposition. Eg, in a high-budget film, the scenes where the Nazi gold is found would appear in a flashback rather than narration.@@FoogouFilms
How I miss life 40 years ago, it was a the best time for Great Britain, how things have changed in that40 years, hardly recognisable as the same country now.
I'm not really one for "Golden Age thinking", but yes, even though there was plenty to be concerned about 40 years ago, it seems to pale into insignificance to the future we seem to be presented with now - in most countries, not just Britain.
At 72 years old I feel the same way. I worry about the current and future generations I feel they've been let down . Anyway very interesting film thank you

It is, yes. At that time (1980) I was using a 16mm Bolex (the wind-up ones with three lenses) for a low budget project I was involved with. Was impressed by the picture quality when we got to see it in a London viewing theatre. Just after it, we were probably one of the first to see the "video" of "Breaking the Law" by Judas Priest! Not my cup of tea usually, but...

I think it may be a number of things - nostalgia, simpler way of life or just good old fashioned, washed out analogue film. I do like the pace of this, though. Many thanks for posting. I just keep thinking that Tinker and Eric are just about to turn up and spill the beans on some old oil painting that they've recently come across.😊
The voice of the actor along with the style of script writing and music playing it took me back to an American old show entitled Harry O. I loved that show and I recommend it for you. Plots and the lead actor are great. ☺️👍🏻

Watched this for relatively early Ian McShane. The film is ok. It starts out strong, but then slows down a bit - even with three murders. It's not bad for a 1980 TV drama. B-
MMmmm? Initially I liked it. It was very 1980s, driving through the countryside, nice soundtrack, Ian McShane being the innocent hero. Nice river and ocean sailing moments. Terence Rigby in glasses and large moustache, as a sinister baddy. John Bird thrown in as a diversion, and some lovely maidens in distress. PLOT>... Lost Gold coins. NO one knows where they are.....Mmmmm? ..Hang on 1 hour and 19 mins, maiden pulls out Key from fireplace ? "It fits the safe." WHAT? no one mentioned a safe! Poor Ian, heart broken, emerges from quick- sand, after killing two baddies for her, and she gives him the elbow ! THE END!
I feel like she used him. He killed once, well he can still do more. Once the job was done.. she resided with the Only man she probably ever trusted. Abd he likes her too.. and she knows it. The poorest lead character ever seen. 😅
The start is a lot like Ripping Yarns Winfrey's Last Case with its Holiday away from it all on the Cornish coast. We never went to Newton Ferrers the fictional Yealemouth here, but we went Wembury Beach next door (and Bigbury, Cawsands, Whitsands, Polperro, Perranporth) on our Plymouth Holidays 1967-72.
Good movie, i saw it years ago, only movie i remember that borrowed a score from another. But Psycho is worth borrowing from. Some scenes are a homage to the Hitchcock classic if you think about it.
I remember Terence Rigby, playing Matthews here, from Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy, in which he played Roy Bland. I still don't understand why the dying Maxwell murmuring, "high tide" should cause the McShane character to link the "952" on his license-plate to something important that was to happen in some place where high tide happened at 9.52. All very '39 Steps' / Riddle of the Sands
I'm halfway through it and I haven't a clue what the license plate thing was all about. Very good acting and filming but I can't get to grips with the storyline.
It makes sense. This is how sometimes something seemingly forgotten can be regained. You try to remember it over and over again and then bang out of the blue something unexpected brings the memory right back again.
A curious observation, the music in this is reminiscent of that in the Italian detective series, Montalbano. Love Ian, Lovejoy is one of my desert island series.
I'd only seen a couple of Montalbano episodes a few years ago (I can't resist saying that name without an exaggerated and affected Italian accent, together with arm gestures! I'm getting some funny looks.) I just checked it out, and yes, those stacatto strings of the theme do sound similar.

And a fine actor at that and he's ACTING, that's his job! I notice no one mentions the sad death of the human in the same scene? How many times has Ian had to act and show emotion and convince an audience that's he's happy, sad or upset? To reiterate it's a play and it's written in the script that Ian's upset having just lost his dog, it's a seminal part of the plot leading up to the human being dying and being the fine very and skilled actor he is, he gets that across wonderfully well, no dog or indeed human was hurt or killed in this production😂
There is something weird in the result. I didn’t finish yet. The plot is a déjà vu of the man who knew too much, but there is no suspense at all. The more I watch the less I’m curious about what the hell it is so mysterious. Maybe it is what Ian the actor is performing. The character is impenetrable. The director pretends to be a kind of anti Hitchcock. The format is not TV neither cinema. It seems a book with illustrations. Nothing is really happening. The sheet I put to be washed while I watch just vanished in the void inside the wash machine. It seems to be an experiment. I’m feeling like being submitted to a test of resilience. And I can’t tell if it is too good or too bad. 🤔
Yes, it's got a slightly dream-like quality to it. I think the film-noir style and the narration, with Mr McShane's very soothing voice, has something to do with it. Also the sound is unreal, it's as if all the speech is dubbed on and all the sound effects are done by Foley engineers.
Great play! I really like Ian McShane. Where have I heard that music before!? It’s driving me crazy! I keep thinking it was something like “The Shining”? But I’m not sure! I am so familiar with that song, but can’t figure out where from!
Is that Hitchcock-type music at the beginning - and why is the sound dipping in and out at the beginning? Is it deliberate? Plus it's not very audible. Seriously you need to increase the volume... actually I can't watch this. The volume keeps dipping in and out.
The original audio isn't very good. Also, it's only in one channel. The volume itself is about the same as other videos I upload. I think it;s the patchy sound quality that is causing the difficulty. Technically, it could be improved, but it all takes a fair bit of time to do. On balance, I thought it was better to post it as it is than not at all. You might find listening with headphones/earbuds improves things.

I can imagine Bernard Herrman watching this, 5 minutes into it: "what is this?!? What the hell is this music? You've massacred my Psycho score!!" Some other details are also heavily influenced by hitchcock which necesarily doesn't make it bad. I thought it started ok but got more disappointing in the end.
Yeah, I tend to agree with you. I'm surprised this film is massively more popular than anything else on my channel. There are far better programmes than this one up there. The mysteries of the YT algorithm!
If this is a thriller, there must be something clinically wrong with me, I like Ian Mc Shane, so I will watch it to the end, if I don't fall asleep at the helm !

According to the sign we see near the beginning, he starts from Compton Bassett, Wilts, which would take about 3-4 hours to get to Cornwall. I guess he just likes driving slowly on back roads; as a yachtsman he probably thinks any speed over 12 knots is dangerous!
@@FoogouFilms I believe that it was because this film was made by Southern TV, but most of the AT serials were Thames, so presumably when the DVD box set was released, the rights were only provided by Thames and not Southern.
@@solitaryramblerSouthern certainly made fine drama series that was shown on the Network in the 70s until 1981! Their productions are slowly but surely being released on DVD by companies such as Network Releasing.

A few people have found this problem. Usually solved with selecting a mono source rather than stereo - the original audio only being in one channel. Hopwe you manage to sort it.
Granted, it's a shame a more original soundtrack couldn't have been used. There again, the Psycho film score composer himself, Bernard Herrmann, was influenced by the edgy harmonies and dissonances of early 20th Century avant-garde composers, such as Stravinsky.
The Psycho music is obvious here, which make me wonder how you get away with the copyright thingy. Notwithstanding that, it's use here just doesn't fit....why?........because this music IS Psycho and is forever enmeshed in that iconic film.....and Janet Leigh as Marion Crane....thanks for posting.

Not one of the best thought through dramas ever. Much is carried by McShane's presence and the general atmosphere plus photography.

I think he's certainly worked up until quite recently. I think Lovejoy was probably the first thing I saw him in, or at least remember seeing him in.
The first film I saw him in was "If it's Tuesday it must be Belgium". If you have not seen it, look for it.

Presumably, this was filmed in 1979, even though it came out in '80. Even for 1979, the 16mm film is picture quality perfect.

Watched this for relatively early Ian McShane. The film is ok. It starts out strong, but then slows down a bit - even with three murders. It's not bad for a 1980 TV drama. B-

MMmmm? Initially I liked it. It was very 1980s, driving through the countryside, nice soundtrack, Ian McShane being the innocent hero. Nice river and ocean sailing moments. Terence Rigby in glasses and large moustache, as a sinister baddy. John Bird thrown in as a diversion, and some lovely maidens in distress. PLOT>... Lost Gold coins.
NO one knows where they are.....Mmmmm? ..Hang on 1 hour and 19 mins, maiden pulls out Key from fireplace ? "It fits the safe." WHAT? no one mentioned a safe! Poor Ian, heart broken, emerges from quick- sand, after killing two baddies for her, and she gives him the elbow ! THE END!
Yes, I like the atmoshpere and many ither elements of this, but deeply flawed plot-wise.
I feel like she used him. He killed once, well he can still do more. Once the job was done.. she resided with the Only man she probably ever trusted. Abd he likes her too.. and she knows it. The poorest lead character ever seen. 😅

The start is a lot like Ripping Yarns Winfrey's Last Case with its Holiday away from it all on the Cornish coast. We never went to Newton Ferrers the fictional Yealemouth here, but we went Wembury Beach next door (and Bigbury, Cawsands, Whitsands, Polperro, Perranporth) on our Plymouth Holidays 1967-72.

Good movie, i saw it years ago, only movie i remember that borrowed a score from another. But Psycho is worth borrowing from. Some scenes are a homage to the Hitchcock classic if you think about it.

My wife raised this very point about the licence plate. Perhaps in this case the writer's creative licence should be revoked?!
I'm halfway through it and I haven't a clue what the license plate thing was all about. Very good acting and filming but I can't get to grips with the storyline.

It makes sense. This is how sometimes something seemingly forgotten can be regained. You try to remember it over and over again and then bang out of the blue something unexpected brings the memory right back again.

A curious observation, the music in this is reminiscent of that in the Italian detective series, Montalbano. Love Ian, Lovejoy is one of my desert island series.
I'd only seen a couple of Montalbano episodes a few years ago (I can't resist saying that name without an exaggerated and affected Italian accent, together with arm gestures! I'm getting some funny looks.) I just checked it out, and yes, those stacatto strings of the theme do sound similar.

And a fine actor at that and he's ACTING, that's his job! I notice no one mentions the sad death of the human in the same scene? How many times has Ian had to act and show emotion and convince an audience that's he's happy, sad or upset? To reiterate it's a play and it's written in the script that Ian's upset having just lost his dog, it's a seminal part of the plot leading up to the human being dying and being the fine very and skilled actor he is, he gets that across wonderfully well, no dog or indeed human was hurt or killed in this production😂

There is something weird in the result. I didn’t finish yet. The plot is a déjà vu of the man who knew too much, but there is no suspense at all. The more I watch the less I’m curious about what the hell it is so mysterious. Maybe it is what Ian the actor is performing. The character is impenetrable. The director pretends to be a kind of anti Hitchcock. The format is not TV neither cinema. It seems a book with illustrations. Nothing is really happening. The sheet I put to be washed while I watch just vanished in the void inside the wash machine. It seems to be an experiment. I’m feeling like being submitted to a test of resilience. And I can’t tell if it is too good or too bad. 🤔
Yes, it's got a slightly dream-like quality to it. I think the film-noir style and the narration, with Mr McShane's very soothing voice, has something to do with it. Also the sound is unreal, it's as if all the speech is dubbed on and all the sound effects are done by Foley engineers.

Is that Hitchcock-type music at the beginning - and why is the sound dipping in and out at the beginning? Is it deliberate? Plus it's not very audible. Seriously you need to increase the volume... actually I can't watch this. The volume keeps dipping in and out.
The original audio isn't very good. Also, it's only in one channel. The volume itself is about the same as other videos I upload. I think it;s the patchy sound quality that is causing the difficulty. Technically, it could be improved, but it all takes a fair bit of time to do. On balance, I thought it was better to post it as it is than not at all. You might find listening with headphones/earbuds improves things.

I can imagine Bernard Herrman watching this, 5 minutes into it: "what is this?!? What the hell is this music? You've massacred my Psycho score!!" Some other details are also heavily influenced by hitchcock which necesarily doesn't make it bad. I thought it started ok but got more disappointing in the end.
Yeah, I tend to agree with you. I'm surprised this film is massively more popular than anything else on my channel. There are far better programmes than this one up there. The mysteries of the YT algorithm!

@@FoogouFilms I believe that it was because this film was made by Southern TV, but most of the AT serials were Thames, so presumably when the DVD box set was released, the rights were only provided by Thames and not Southern.

Granted, it's a shame a more original soundtrack couldn't have been used. There again, the Psycho film score composer himself, Bernard Herrmann, was influenced by the edgy harmonies and dissonances of early 20th Century avant-garde composers, such as Stravinsky.
