  • England secure qualification for the 1998 World Cup with a battling goalless draw in Rome against Italy in October 1997. The Italians will join them in the finals via the play-offs. This match was arguably the high point of Glenn Hoddle's reign in charge of England, with Paul Ince giving a particularly courageous performance.

    Ian Wright at the end. The roller coaster of his missed chance nearly turning into Italys goal being scored down the other end. Relief! Then the final whistle. And the realisation he was going to a World Cup with a manager in charge who believed in him. Tears of joy! And then it all got taken away from him through a cruel injury before the tournament. Heartbreaking. This beautiful, bittersweet game we love. God bless Ian Wright. God bless England

    Brilliant game, Gazza was amazing, kept everything moving fluently, great skill, vision, simple passes, creating chances, link up play, pure class act. You only have to read about how Xavi and Iniesta used to watch videos of Scholes to improve their techniques, to understand the quality of the player. Harry Redknapp recently said that England's best chance of world cup victory was in '98. Don't forget they won 'Le Tornoui' in '97.

      Zola's too. I bet they both had "what if" thoughts for a long time after. But Gazza would have been the biggest treat from an English point of view, and perhaps the more influential given that Italy had a lot of good in form forwards.

    Hoddle was a vindictive bastard not taking Gazza to the World Cup. When Franz Beckenbauer was asked his opinion he said that “Gascoigne is still one of the worlds best players”. Gazza would have risen to the occasion and played a blinder at that World Cup.

    Good refereeing at 4.05. You rarely see that sort of vision with whistleblowers given their almost blind tendency to be sucked in by the acting talents of people like Suarez and Ronaldo and half a dozen Argo's and Germans per match.

      Adams catches him. Granted Del Piero senses the possibility of a connection and lets his right foot linger a bit, but he is brought down. Technically it could have been a penalty, I think.

    We need a manager like Glen again. Someone with a fresh modern outlook on the game who shows some passion. Not like the tired old stager currently occupying the post. ANd as far as I am concerned, I dont care if they shag Margaret Thatchers corpse off field - its what they do as manager that counts.

    • @SuperTed19021
      @SuperTed19021 8 лет назад +2

      Glenn Hoddle certainly got us playing some nice football and was a modern thinker, that performance in Rome proved it but he was blessed with a great depth of talent from that period, especially inheriting the Euro 96 squad; compared to what Roy Hodgson has now. Don't know if Glenn would do much else with the current squad. At least Hodgson has gave young players a chance and tried to do more attacking football compared to such other kick-and-rush merchants. Hoddle was decent that's for sure but he did have a high calibre of talent to work with.

    • @SI-cd7xs
      @SI-cd7xs 6 лет назад

      Hodgson is Englands worst ever manager. the fact that he got to manage for 3 tournaments - every single one a total embarassment, while the likes of clough & redknapp never got the job says a lot about the F.A.

    Elaborate? The press, the fans - you know the usual? When have England never been slated? It's par for the course, always has been. 1-0 isn't a pasting but the performance took one certainly. Patient possession football from England? Dude, you are miles off reality. Miles off. All the other comments are like i say, emotional nostalgia. As I say In 10 years they'll be back saying great things about Euro 12. Sorry mate, you aint ever going to convince me and nor me you. Stalemate!

    Granted their have been times England have been treated favourably by the press. But it's pretty rare. How you can't acknowledge that is baffling in the extreme. The whole team were slated after that 1-0 defeat. Hoddle may have the "2nd best record" and personally I don't think he should have gone but it's not about Hoddle. It's about England. Winning a meaningless tournament means about as much as the pre-season Emirates Cup - absolutely fuck all. No one cared (apart from England).

    I dont think this was Glen Hoddles high point as the Tournoi showed how Glen had really influenced England to a level that could compete with the best. And they pretty much would have gone a lot further in WC 98 until some snot got himself sent off against Argentina.
