So I've been delving full-force into gardening for a rather short time, 5-6 yrs. Quit a mechanic career to pursue employment and co-op with a local sucessful veggie farmer. I've researched, practiced, and learned A LOT over this short time. I must say, my recent discovery of Jeff the barefoot gardener and his approach feels like some of the most important information and perspective angles I have found to date! Thanks so much!

This is an old video but I like it he admits that he doesn't know everything. And he admits that he is learning even though he's very knowledgeable.

Nothing much more satisfying than digging in the dirt, watching the fruits of your labor ( no pun intended) appear as if by magic, in front of your eyes. 40 years ago, I thought my Dad was such a square ( that was the word then), just out of touch. Now I'm old, and the wisdom he imparted on me has found it's way home. Everyone should do it. Food doesn't come from Safeway

I am an engineer with decades in the Oil Industry. Today, I just love kneeling on Mother Earth, doing no digging, just mulching, tendering to the 40 species of plants, observing Nature, etc. Under the shade of three big trees, there is still enough sunlight filtering through for the flowers, herbs, bushes, etc. Simply wonderful. I think it is the energy.

We've tried many methods we've seen in other places. We are in SE NC. So we're using what what failed the last two years as a jump off point!

Einstein is supposed to have said, "If we knew what we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?". About the wood chips turning the plants yellow, if you used a deep layer, the decomposition could have heated the soil up considerably.

With new wood chips i use as mulch not as an amendment. It only robs the nitrogen if in the soil if on top it will make a compost tea every rain.

What variety of kale? I have found red russian better tasting than some others. I also had good luck with dinosaur> I send seeds to a church farm in Zambia. It is used to feed the many orphans there because of A.I.D.S. They love kale (they called it rape, an old Scottish term). Danish ball head cabbage and chinese and popcorn. Our seeds do well over there.

It seems the rocks are working like a top cove mulch. As wood chips or hay would work the rocks are doing the same. Keeping the soil underneath cool and moisture trapped. I think Lol

Hi my friend I'm john , I have a friend next door who started a garden 3 weeks ago not knowing anything about preparing the soil. He came to me today told me his plant leafs are turning yellow....I told that the soil PH is to Acidic he said what is ph...LOL...How can I help him neutralize his soil with his plants in the garden.....Please help me to help my neighbor

John use wood ash from a wood stove. Just make sure nothing negative has been burned in with it that would have chemicals. The wood ash will make acidic soil "sweet" while adding some trace minerals. It can be roughly worked in the top soil and watered in. It may take some time to improve the ph though
