As a scientific experiment what Charlie is doing can help understand Bear behaviour and since Bear population is in the rise, it´s more probable that people will have close encounters with these magnificent animals, so the best we understand them the best we can deal with them...

It is a true HONOR to have a wild animal trust you. I respect & envy Charlie for the experiences he chose to have with those bears. And wild animals appreciate kind treatment & food. It would seem that, at least some of the bears, would be devoted (even protective) of Charlie. I wondered, several times while watching this series, if the bears might not kill someone just because they thought Charlie might be harmed. I'm betting they would.

I am actually really pissed off at the way we keep trying to make enemies out of everything that has more power than we do. We should be living with nature embracing it. I mean that would just prove beyond doubt that we do have a great mental capacity. I'd support anyone that went out and tried to learn from Charlie and Kevin Richardson so we can save their existence and ours. Coexistence.

@@seethreefarms1335 --- We think that we are so intelligent (and to some degree, we are), but we are really just "domesticated" wild animals, ourselves, and quite violent to boot. To label other creatures as "extremely dangerous" is like the pot calling the kettle "black".
Instead of FINING and humiliating Charlie, for his accomplishments, they should've been paying him to be a wildlife researcher. How many other people are you going to find who are willing to get up, close & personal, with wild grizzly bears? I'm sure that there's less than a handful as I type this comment.
To be fair (and I could be completely wrong about this), I've often wondered if the authorities wouldn't have left Charlie alone if so much attention hadn't been called to what he was doing. After all, he WAS sixty miles away from the general population.
My thought is that, once that guy started writing articles, about him, in the newspapers (and certainly after the documentaries came out), they HAD to take action, or face accusations of being biased in Charlie's favor. As I said before, they should've just made him a "researcher", and left him alone. Just my two cents.

Isn't it sick that you can legally bait bears in order to lure them into rifle range to kill them but you can't feed them in order to simply interact with them and learn more about them? What a twisted species we humans have become.

Our USA Game & Fish Agency is CORRUPTED. The mega stores like Bass ProShops and hunting supply corporations give those Agency Commissioners free under the table money, very expensive presents like all terrain vehicles. Trucks, Rifles, and free all expenses paid African Safari Cage Hunts were they take their families to shoot and embalm into mummies rare wildlife in enclosures. There is more money made now on extermination of wilderness & wildlife than the Christmas Holidays once were for the large chain stores like Walmart. Modern sport Hunting as the ultimate controller of wilderness ecosystem ( game management) was invented by Aldo Leopold and he regretted it before his death. He realized hunting turned Africa's once healthy natural ecosystem into huge game park enclosures where every animal is just a number to kill on a menu for tourist hunting. Natural selection no longer happens anywhere because of modern hunting. In USA even the wildlife Refuges are hunted now and have been hunted out. The private hunting areas that charge hunters have secretly been releasing pregnant hogs in Spring to give pay hunters something to kill each winter and that has gotten so out of hand it has become illegal to release them this year. Modern Hunting even has annual seasons to kill rare predators like brown bear, mointain lion. Wolves, a sure cause of disease plague and rapid extinctions world wide. Nothing upsets natural selection and animal health worse than hunting in these times of habitat loss and weird weather disasters. I’m really sorry Charle, I know you love those bears but I think feeding them is not a good idea for their longevity. Bear need to know how to survive without handouts, otherwise they will not have any need to learn the skills and abilities to be in nature on their own. They’ll just come back to you for food and expect the same from other humans.

Those Bears were Charlies Friend's ,Companions in Life and he Cherished the Love they had. It was mutual attachment Charlie chose the Bears and The Bears Chose Charlie for Companionship and to share their lives with each other. It was beyond just coming for food, this was a mutually enriching experience for all the bears and Charlie If someone has guests , it is natural to give your friends food when they drop over, some lunch or dinner perfectly natural. I find Black Bears Benign. Bears are solitary beings and tend to keep to themselves by choice. All the more incredable how the bears learned to adjust to each other's company. I Love all the bears. I could see myself being quite comfortable with Black Bears though more cautious with Grizzlies as they are more high strung than Black bears. But a Baby Grizzly I find cuter than a human baby. Just utterly adorable and so beautiful.

The North American places that still have some bears left almost all allow feeding/ baiting bears if you are paying for license and sporting goods / hunting supplies. These persons feed them habitually and then shoot and kill / maim the bears which causes them to become unnaturally associated with humans with very bad intent. Being fed for weeks then maimed by humans causes much more maligned bears than kind persons feeding them like Charlie Vandergaw ( the Alaskan Man who lives with wild bears both grizzly and black.

I'm truly baffled at the hypocrisy. Bears mainly attack humans because they are afraid of us, and try to defend themselves or their cubs, but people condemn what Charlie Vandergaw does, feeding the bears and reducing the fear that bears have of humans, under the guise that this will create more bear attacks. In fact, what this man is doing is REDUCING the chance of bear attacks by showing that bears don't need to be afraid of humans. Though we do hunt for sport which WILL make more bear attacks.

Those few square meters for the house inmidst thousands of acres of nature. It is our ALL space or are we supposed to move to the moon. Only a certain physical distance is required once in a while like at night or when they have cubs or we have small children. Simply respect certain rules in nature and you will be respected too. Trust your gut feeling (and train it continuously). Native Indians lived with bears, wolves, eagles etc. in complete harmony for hundreds of years. But Europeans had to sail over and (still) claim the country as theirs. Includes Canada, Alaska, US, all South American countries, the Caribbean, African countries (now taken over by China because of the mines). Except sharing his love with a few bears this man didn't do any harm to planet Earth.

Robert E. Sipes --- He wasn't invading THEIR territory. THEY were coming to him...And they were doing this BEFORE he even started feeding them. It was simply a relationship that evolved, and then grew deeper once food was being shared. I had a gray squirrel, once, and I fed him...And I don't believe, for a second, that I was endangering other squirrels who lived in the area. Charlie's set-up was extremely exceptional.
Had he been living close to Others (like in a neighborhood setting), I would agree with you. But his ability to interact with these animals was worth waaay more than any danger that was being posed. It couldn't have been a more perfect set-up for what was taking place, if you ask me. ...Yeah, I know...You're not asking me. It would be wonderful if we could just walk up to any ole' bear we wanted to, and give them a big cuddle, and a few treats, just like we can do with our beloved pets at home, but no, they are wild and totally unpredictable. Not only that, but each bear is different some by nature, some by species, and yet others by circumstances at the time. Just like humans, they may not always be in a good mood, or trust, and think like humans do. They may react instinctively at any given moment, and for any number of reasons, which could result in injury or death to any animal or human in close proximity. For these reasons, it would be nearly impossible to predict the outcome of an encounter with any wild animal, let alone bears. Feeding bears could habitualize them into seeking out food around human camps, and housing, with a large potential for disasterous results. I think it's appauling to bait animals to be hunted for fun, and those who do this are NOT brave at all, they are just cruel, uncaring cowards. The bears should be left to their own natural devices, to forage as nature intended. Feeding also has the potential to draw animals together into closer proximity to each other than they might otherwise have been, increasing the danger of tensions, stress, and communicable diseases to be spread, or violent clashes between animals causing injuries or death to other animals, or even to humans. We should all be very aware of the potential risks of indiscriminate interactions with wild animals, not only for our own safety, but also giving strong consideration to the health and safety of the animals that share our environment.

Bakeon* --- I tried living with a 3/4 wolf dog once...Boy, did that NOT work out. It tore all of my blinds off the windows, looking for an escape route, and chewed a big hole in a very expensive leather chair that I owned. Still, it wasn't her fault. She was a wolf...Not a Golden Retriever. Finally found a good sancturary, for her to go to, where she could live out a good life with other wolf dogs.

If you truly love bears, then humans need to stop being selfish and let them stay wild. They are not our friends… they are amazing wild animals. Because of his regular interactions with these bears, an entire Bear family may have to be euthanized just so one guy wants to bond with them. If you truly love bears, scare them when they come around humans, including yourself.

I see nothing wrong with a bait site to study and watch them, but if he feeds them all the time the cubs wont learn how to survive on their own its a sticky situation.
