  • A van life vlog where we experience our first mistake in Canada. This is Pancake's (our van) FIRST time on a ferry as we take the Chi-Cheemaun ferry across the Georgian Bay from Tobermory to Manitoulin Island. We experience a Dark Sky Preserve, hike to an AMAZING overlook on the Cup & Saucer Trail, and finally I even convince Natalie to go on a cold plunge at Bridal Veil Falls 😄🚐

      I agree with another person who said not to miss the east coast, but I would add, don’t miss Newfoundland and Labrador, or the west coast (BC), either. I’ve been across this entire country and for sure try to hit the coasts, if you can. Of course, the middle is wonderful too. Safe journey, and welcome to Canada!

    As a veteran ferry traveler (I live on an island) my one piece of advice is to always bring snacks and don't bother with the ferry food. Usually the only thing I will buy aboard the ferry is a cold drink and maybe some candy.

    On some ferry rides in Canada, pets are either left in the vehicle or taken to a designated pet respite area padded with Astro turf instead of grass. My dogs wouldn't know the difference between this and carpet and would hold their pee indefinitely. It's a learning curve!

    To find out your exact height, go to Home Depot and get a long , stiff piece of 2x4 pr 2x6 lumber that is wider than your van. Put it straight on the highest point of your van, ie air conditioner or solar panels etc. Then hold it in place while your partner uses a measuring tape from the edge of the wood overhanging on the van, to the ground. That is your precise van height to use for reference for bridges, tunnels, Fast food drive throughs. 😉

    I don’t know if you have this comment already but often the reason a campground is “fully booked” but then no one is there is because the spots fill up and so if you are from the city its not uncommon for people to book a site for the whole summer and only use it on the weekends. Or book for a month and only come up from Toronto Friday to Sunday.

    As an FYI about the Niagara Escarpment. It is a Limestone geological formation that begin at Niagara Falls,, continues north along the Bruce peninsula, the whole of Maintoulin Island, through the straits of Mackinac and continuing south along Lake Michigan towards Chicago, before ending :)

    • @brentwoodbay
      @brentwoodbay Год назад +2

      It looks as though that when the escarpment gets to Tobermory, the top of it is at lake level as when I snorkeled on the western side of the peninsula, you go out just a few feet and then it plunges right down into blackness, hundreds of feet!

    • @kirstensmith9454

      @@brentwoodbay It really is an amazing geological structure. I used to live on the North Shore of Georgian Bay and when we went out on the water to visit the islands on North side of the Manitoulin Island, there is a place where one island is solid granite on the Canadian Shield and only a few thousand meters away is another island of solid Limestone that is on the Niagara Escarpment formation. It really is so cool to explore that part of the world :)

    • @brentwoodbay
      @brentwoodbay Год назад +2

      In actuality, I was snorkeling right on the edge of Niagara Falls! I remember now that the other side of the peninsula, you could really sense the 'slab' of the escarpment as the beaches there were very flat, with just a slow slope down.

    @Jimmy & Natalie. Hi guys. You were very wise not to go too close to the edge of the cliff, in case an updraught dragged you off. But if you REALLY want to look over, the safe thing to do is lay flat on your front and inch forward on your elbows until your eyes are over the edge. Don't forget to go back the same way until it is safe to stand up. Never underestimate the strength of an updraught, especially the impact of sudden gusts in otherwise calm weather. @@meggo329 WTF are you talking about???? This is the stupidest, most un-educated comment I've ever read! Grow up!

    Ah, the Cheecheemaun. Have made a number of crossings on her. Somw good campgrounds on Manitoulin. From the West Coast so lots of ferries there. Glad to see you exploring my country. Happy trails.

    I’m glad I found you guys again. Last video I saw you guys said you were taking a break a few months ago after the California trip. I could swear I was subscribed but stopped seeing anything. Love your videos.

    When I use to rock climb, I could never get close to the edge at the top unless I was tied in. Sometimes there were no trees and we had to borrow ropes so I could be tied or I didn't get close. You are way braver than I ever was.

    Great video as usual but sad that it is now over for a whole week. You need a dog for security (early warning system), but it really complicates traveling. I recommend a rescue dog because they are so grateful.

      Agreed! Between my asthma and traveling like we do, it's hard to see getting a dog -- but, if we did, it would 100% be a rescue!

    Tobermory is beautiful.I worked up there when I was 16 years old with the Ministry of Natural Resources. Beautiful country. 😁 Watch out for the Massasauga rattlesnake on the eastern side of Georgian Bay and on the Bruce Peninsula!

    They do have it on their website and on the doors and on the announcements that you can't be in your vehicle while it is moving. Hint for next time, take a blanket and sit on the deck chairs at the top! Bring binocs too!
