    Hi, just a few questions,
    1) Was power limit on?
    2) Was FC connected so air unit knows the quad is arm and is not limiting power to 25mW?
    3) Was low latency mode on?
    4) Was focus mode on?
    5) Are you going to test it with other antennas?
    6) Was the latency similar to analog when flying at a close range?
    7) Could you make same test without recording onboard? (Some says that this could interfere with bitrate)
    Did I say only a few questions? ;)
    Very nice video, thanks and keep it going!

Hes doing the same line with both systems with one having latency and the other having static, OMO flying though static is possible where as flying though latency depends on your line and if your going to crash. It won't be anywhere the engineering level of DJI. Id expect half the range, nowhere near as refined and gauranteed it won't progress/update as quickly as djis version. They will be fighting a battle they can't possibly hope to win against a monstrous company with almost infinite resources to throw at the system if they decide to. Just look at fatsharks history. After more than a year of people whinging about the crappy DVR software they provide on their goggles it wasn't until immersionrc organised new firmware to fix the flaws that anything was done. I hope it's good, but I have my doubts. DJI V2 will kill it so I'm going to be patient and wait for that.

    Thanks for the great analysis Kevin. I bought a pair and tested them today on an old quad. At first they didn't have reasonable range. Then I realized that my old VTX transmitting at 800mW could be interfering. I turned it down to 25mW and my range increased. Wow, the crystal clear image is so cool. Now I'm rebuilding the quad without the analog camera and VTX to see what my max range can be. So far, it is pretty nice to see digital clarity. Scraggle and branches can't hide anymore. :) The latency when flying behind metal buildings does suck. I need to work on the antenna placement.

I don't ever record HD and fly just for the experience it would be nice to fly in HD but the dji's short comings when it comes to penetration seals the deal for me. I fly behind many trees and buildings and the analog rapid fire handles this best.

    I'm new to FPV, but I've been building PCs for 20 years. If there is anything that I've learned about tech, it's to not get overly excited about gen 1 of ANYTHING. It's always great to see something new come out, but it's immature and will always need to have some bugs worked out. Sometimes it will happen through firmware updates and the product will improve. Usually it's not until the 2nd versions come out though. I love what DJI has done here. They literally kicked the door open on something that some people were even saying wasn't going to be possible for FPV use. They will work on theirs and make it better. They have already forced Fatshark's hand and they are announcing their own HD FPV system. Others will start to follow. It will take time, but it has already even sparked a little competition on these new HD products. DJI has even made this system competitively priced with the high end analog systems that people are already flying. The thing that really surprised me was when it wasn't actually completely proprietary. It already has limited functionality with Betaflight OSD and they say that will get better. It can also be used with your existing receiver and transmitter if you want to go that route as well. This is all good stuff for the future of improving the FPV experience and getting more people into this hobby/sport!

    I was a TV engineer for over 30 years and worked through the analogue to digital switch over , the digital signal is great when it works but it's either there or it's not and this is the problem , the latency and freezing pictures are definitely NOT something I want for fpv.
    The answer is not simple, maybe use lower frequencies in video connection, maybe even adjust the frequency and or data levels depending on the signal quality so automatically lower frequencies which penetrate better when signals get weak...
    We have a long way to go still before good reliable hd fpv is here.

    I think the variable latency is the huge part. Also how does this function with failsafes? How long will the system wait for the next frame before it desides to shut down? Our quads travel pretty fast, an extra 1 even ONE second of having no control is the difference between a broken quad, injury, damage etc. Also what if it freezes at a moment im punching? Does it just full throttle for 3 seconds since that's it's last "input" frame? Too many unanswered questions for me. Also just not enough general research in the penetration/reliability of the system. I can imagine flying this in a city with lots of RF would basically be impossible.

    Hey Kevin, Did you guys try to see how well the DJI performs when flying simultaneously with other pilots who are runnning the traditional analog gear? Does the analog RF interfere with DJI digital RF or vice versa? I wonder if the video locking up is caused by the onboard DVR trying to buffer or having troubles writing to SD card fast enough. Does it lock up like that if you are just recording goggle DVR?

Also, I can still fly through 300ms of latency enough to level out & recover to an area with better signal, or better yet, just stay within the range of what my RapidFire could reach and avoid latency altogether. Thoughts?

    Variation in latency even at the finest amount is going to cause issues with racing and ironically the only places we don't have video quality issues is at club level events. Will be interesting to see this system used in an extremely high RF environment such as a big race and see if constant variation in latency occurs. If so it's going to make for some very random race results. Still early days yet, hopefully DJI can get on top of all the issues. Awesome work buddy.

      I am excited about the system and look forward to seeing what they can do with the platform. I agree that even the minor variations in latency when flying my local spots is a big issue without taking it to the extremes I did here. Going behind the first line of trees can sometimes make it drop from 28ms to 60ms before you know it.

      That's not true. Watch it again. I flew on the opposite side of a building, video pixelated, latency increased, and it eventually failsafed. What I was so impressed with is the way it handled it compared to previous HD systems, not that it was perfect on the other side. The video shows that. My everyday gear - Unify and R-XSR don't get any signal back there at all. Like all new things, you don't really get a good consensus until it's in the wild being used by a bunch of people in a bunch of scenarios. This is why every product that comes out in FPV gets a V2, V3 and so on. I just really hope the product does well so they continue to make FPV gear. I don't plan on using their controller or on board recording, so I'd love to see them strip the RX and recording bits off the unit and get the size and price down.

    • @TAGE_FPV
      @TAGE_FPV 5 лет назад +1

      patch antennas don't offer better reception for digital signals unless all 4 antennas are combined together.
      this is because for analog we want zero MIMO signal transversal and for digital we want ONLY MIMO signal transversal.
      this is why wifi uses dipoles and not patch antennas for the most part.
      you COULD probably add HUGE 5.8ghz dipoles on all 4 antenna ends and get better range though

    • @rcrdps8144
      @rcrdps8144 5 лет назад

      @@TAGE_FPV I find the VAS patch antennas provide fairly decent omni coverage for closer in, and great directional coverage too. I sometimes fly with only patches. So could try 4 of those assuming most of your flying will be in front of you. I find that for my yard( 1 acre), I fly around behind me( while standing in the air conditioned house) just fine, but at around 75-100yds, I need to have a patch pointed in that general direction.
      Unfortunately, the goggles are rp-sma, and all antennas are LHCP I think. So will be further down the road before I get around to buying another 4 patches since mine are all RHCP and SMA. Kinda stinks that you'll have the loss of another adapter(rp-sma to sma) for each one.

  • @FpvBlue

    I think the most important point you are raising is that analog takes zero time to go from perfect transmission to almost-useless-static and vice versa. Digital needs to understand the data isn't coming through to switch to lower data bandwidth modes. How long this takes is a very important factor in a digital system. The Rotor Riot testing showed the system can do awesome when it has enough time to adapt to a worse SNR, but your testing shows the system just freezes if the cliff is immediate (coming from an engineer, my guess is the system is changing frequency instead of switching to a mode with lower SNR, as it's assuming the channel just got hit with some interference, while it should decrease bandwidth immediately).
    Full disclosure: my system won't be any better and isn't for racing drones anyway. I believe DJI did an amazing job.

      Exactly this. The signal degradation is actually handled really nicely for a digital system. Of course at some point you're going to lose information, DJI aren't wizzards. What's important for me is that you are aware of the weakening signal and you don't get sudden blackouts as with the Connex ProSight.
